NCAA second weekend results
BYU got lucky and had PK called in final minute to win 1-0. MQ won earlier game.

Re: NCAA second weekend results
The tackle with the feet might be fine, it's the shoulder grab-and-takedown that got the foul/PK called. Foolish defense for a 90' tie - and barely into the box.

Re: NCAA second weekend results
I'm sorry... there may have been a foul on that play (and yes, there was), but you can't call that as a ref. If the BYU player were on a break-away or had a clear opportunity on goal or was trying to shoot, I'd be OK with it. But she was one foot into the box and passing back... terrible, terrible call for a PK in the final minute of a tied game.

Re: NCAA second weekend results
The NCAA rules of the game don't seem to support your view.
From 12.2 - "All direct kicks awarded to the offensive team in the penalty area are penalty kicks. "
And this rule explicitly states to award a PK even though play is somewhere else on the field.
"A.R. 12.6.1.1. An offensive player is struck by an opponent in the penalty area, but the ball is in play elsewhere on the field at the time. RULING: A penalty kick shall be awarded and the offending player ejected for fighting."

Is that the apples and oranges rule?

Re: NCAA second weekend results
Fair enough. I realize it's techincally correct to issue a PK for a foul in the box, no matter what the game situation is.
But if the ref is going to be that punctilious in enforcing the rules, I hope he also enforced the proper alloted of time for keepers to put a ball back in play, and that throw-ins were taken from the correct position, and that substitues coming off the bench waited until being summoned, etc.
Considering that the ref only called 17 total fouls, I seriously doubt the ref was calling a super tight game. It's disappointing to see a game ended like that, especially a playoff game.

Re: NCAA second weekend results
I definitely agree that it is disappointing to see a close playoff game decided like that.
If I wrote the soccer rules, I would want a provision that allows for more fouls to be called in the box without awarding a PK. Of course, I'd also like to see a foul counting system implemented, similar to basketball. And I want to switch to NASL style shootouts instead of PKs. So I might be kinda out there

BYU advanced on penalties over Marquette.
Nobody saved any of them. BORING.
Pitch invasion. Come on, that's already been done.

Marquette keeper saved the first shot (Carly Payne Homloe).
