Pilots vs. Oregon State
Very nice win over UNC Friday, but by now we should be totally focused on OSU! I’m sure Garrett and the team finished congratulating themselves late Friday and are now zeroing in on plans against OSU. Nice not to have classes getting in the way of Soccer….two more games like that, OSU and UO, then it’s back to class full-time for our student-athletes.
I really appreciate the job Linus Rhode has done at OSU, and as the two teams are quite familiar with each other, I expect it will be close and hard fought…….like there’s any other way!! You might recall last year’s regular season game went to overtime with the Pilots finally prevailing 2-1.
OSU comes to town at 1-0 after defeating UAB in Corvallis on Friday night when the ball glanced of junior forward Morgan Kennedy’s back into the goal for the only score.
The Beavers and Pilots have hooked up a total of 25 times during the past quarter century, with the Pilots having won each meeting but two. The lone win for the Beavers came back in 1994, when they took care of UP, 3-2 in Corvallis. The other exception was last season’s regulation tie in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, which was eventually won by UP 7-6 on PKs.
Morgan Kennedy ........... does OSU have the shortest shorts in college soccer, or what?

Geez, maybe you should resurrect that thread with a transfer of the OSU photo?
It's sort of a "break the tension" thread.
Edit: Just went over to BigSoccer and I see the Geez thought of this way before I posted.

Read the thread; yea, a little chuckling, but mostly just shaking my head while muttering, "oh lord, have you folks nothing better to do," but then I realized I was spending part of a Sunday evening posting about ladies shorts on PN.Geezaldinho wrote:Sure.

Glad I could add fuel to the discussion with Morgan's picture........she may roll her own, but once again, I really like the look.........and for a day or two, she'll be my screen saver.

For the record, I rolled my pants (As did the rest of my HS squad) over a decade ago for every game/practice... Just saying, it isn't a ladies only or even a new thing... Psh.
Wait, does that make me a hipster?

Re: Pilots vs. Oregon State
Hats off to OSU. They got a win out of almost nothing. And they ended a drought about twice as long as ours was with UNC.
About says it. We had chances
9 shots v. 3
5 SOG v. 1
Their one went in. And some legs looked a bit tired.
Love to see the replays of the takedowns., especially the one on Capelle where 2 OSU players sandwiched her that wasn't called, and the yellow he gave to see if it was last man, or if the foul was actually in the box.
On second thought, maybe I don't.
Have to get ready for the other Oregon.

Out Hustled + Out Muscled = Out Scored (1-0)
I was afraid of a letdown after UNC (I could even sense it on PN), and it was apparent on the pitch tonight.
I personally hate losing more than I enjoy winning; I hope the team feels the same way heading into the UO game on Friday night.

Re: Pilots vs. Oregon State
Just a few half-thought-out observations and reactions:
-Another beautiful late summer night at Merlo. We got more than 2400 fans out. On a Monday. Only two other programs averaged that many last year. And what a sunset.
-We looked good. Really good. This is the Pilots program that I know. The Beavers, while gritty and well-disciplined, had no business winning this game. We possessed significantly more technical skill at virtually every position and speed to boot. The composure we displayed on the ball was impressive and we passed through their defense at will.
-While our finishing may have left some to be desired, we put good shots on frame. Their keeper made some dandy saves. WOTM for their team, no doubt.
-Sometimes you just concede on set pieces. I couldn't tell live if we missed a mark, and according to the game recap on the website, the ball deflected off of a Pilot. Oh well.
-Maybe I'm just getting more crotchety with age, but Pilot fans as a whole are becoming a lot more homerish than they used to be when it comes to officiating. I didn't think that the ref blew any of those calls. Getting bent out of shape as much as we did for some of those no-calls shows a lack of soccer knowledge that we are frankly better than. /soapbox
-The future of this team is very bright with what I saw (via webcast) on Friday and in person tonight.

While I can't dispel the thought you are getting "more crotchety with age," I didn't think the crowd was MORE homerish, just a little more organized in their protests.VillaGorilla wrote:-Maybe I'm just getting more crotchety with age, but Pilot fans as a whole are becoming a lot more homerish than they used to be when it comes to officiating. Certainly the physical nature of the game, that included three yellow cards against OSU, caused our fans to be a bit more vocal, but also having one section of the stands packed with Beavers, made for a bit more give and take when it came to fan reaction to on-field incidents. And finally, more adults and semi-adults, and fewer kids tonight made for a little different vibe from the stands. Not a bad vibe, just a little more vocal. Personally, I liked it!
I only heard one somewhat off-color chant from the not-yet-here student section.....and I have to admit it was clever, and I laughed, but not so anyone could see.

Re: Pilots vs. Oregon State
From the Oregonian (edited):
It’s not often that players gather to take a team picture following a college women’s soccer regular-season win, but this was no ordinary victory for Oregon State.
The Beavers ended 18 years of futility Monday night when Brandi Dawson’s goal during the 25th minute held up for a 1-0 win over Portland before a crowd of 2,407 at Merlo Field.
Oregon State (2-0) snapped a 14-game losing streak to the Pilots. So pausing for a team picture near the west goal at Merlo Field felt right for the Beavers.
“The coach in Linus Rhode didn’t want to make a huge deal about beating the Pilots, who were coming off a season-opening 1-0 win over No. 8 North Carolina. But OSU coach wouldn’t deny this one had extra meaning, even for a second game of the season.
“I think it takes the monkey off our back, that we were able to do it up here,” Rhode said.
Aside from having to accept a loss, Portland coach Garrett Smith seemed optimistic about Monday’s performance and offensive opportunities the Pilots created.
“I have two forwards that are a little upset right now,” Smith said.
The difference came in the 25th minute, when Megan Miller floated a corner kick to the middle of the penalty box. Dawson got free and was able to take a point-blank header that escaped the reach of UP goalie Erin Dees.
“It was a perfect ball from Megan,” Dawson said.
From there, Oregon State braced itself for the attacking Pilots with gritty team defense. Portland had two good chances early in the second half, including a one-on-one try by Amanda Frisbie, which Larose-Bernier was able to smother.

Re: Pilots vs. Oregon State
It's early in the season on a shorthanded team with plenty of newcomers. There are going to be ups and downs. I thought the positives in this game outweighed the negatives. The standout for me was LaPrevotte who showed great speed and a willingness to mix it up out on the pitch. DeGrood played another fine game in the back. Can't agree with VG about the officiating. Micaela was fouled more than once that didn't get called. I thought the ref let way too much shirt pulling, grabbing and crashing into each other go uncalled on both teams. It is far from "the beautiful game" the way the Beavs play. We all know that is Pac 12 soccer.

Re: Pilots vs. Oregon State
In addition to both elating and troubling us a bit, the last two games will no doubt confound the pollsters.
Soccer America came out with its first poll this morning, which does include last night's result..
So we go from unranked to ranked 11th.... And possibly back again, Depending on this Friday's result. We also knocked UNC from 4th or 7th to 19th.
It is very early. We have things to work on, no doubt. The team shows lots of promise, and so far a defense that looks very good. We have to get a couple players back and get more spark in the offense.
Anybody know why Camelli didn't play?

The two-on-one in the first half, let's just say you don't see Garrett get up and talk to the fourth official much.Geezaldinho wrote:

The free kick right outside the 18 in the second half might have been correct if the contact started there, not sure what the law says. Or it might have been a cop-out to avoid giving a penalty (referees never do that, right?). The guy seemed to be afraid to give much at all in the final third.
Regardless we have some good attacking players, just need to get it all together.

I was one of the "vocal" ones because of the ref missing obvious in-his-face violations, but the one that irked me the most was the Elizabeth Lambert move by OSU on Kendall's ponytail. I concentrated on making sure in my mind that she wasn't hurt too much to get the number of the OSU player, but it was on a run to get a pass from where the ref was standing...what else would he have been looking at?..I asked outrageously. It took Kendall away from the ball, but she didn't fall down...maybe that was why he shrugged it off.
There were multiple issues of hands pushing Pilots away from 50-50's on the ground as well as in the air. Most of the fans near me were yelling to the refs that the game was supposed to be played with feet not hands, but to no avail. This might be the way of the PAC12, but I agree wholeheartedly that this kind of play is NOT the beautiful game that I've been seeing in previous years.
For the positives, I am excited by the play of LaPrevotte and DeGrood in both games and in DJ for the UNC game, although she was more hesitant in this game. I know in my heart that DJ will be a factor in many of the upcoming games. Taylor was dressed, but noticeably limping...Emily was dressed, but no boots, and I couldn't see Kaila walking to notice if she had any physical problems.
For now, I'm looking forward to a start to finish bashing of the Ducks. See y'all there...at the food booths first, if anyone wants to kibitz.

If my memory is correct the Ducks pushed us hard in spring game. Agaisnt the common opponent UAB, they had more shots, SOGs than the Beavers. I too hope it will be a great win for us but may not be a lop-sided one.

Re: Pilots vs. Oregon State
I concur with most of what has been said.
Lots of positives, a long way to go.
Some teams are more physical.
Some refs allow more physical play.
Gotta be ready.
At the start of the second half UP brought the ball up the sideline 3-4 times with the ball ending out on us. Each time the play ended the forward UP player flattened a Beaver. Each time the foul was called. This appeared to work in UPs favor. It was after this that that the ref started calling more fouls and issuing yellow cards. Any one else notice this?
I really liked the play of the little French girl. I think her play is the reason Camelli didn't play.
I think we have proven we can bring the ball up, and send it across. Will we be able to finish?
I thought McCluskie's headers on the corner kicks were our best chances of scoring. One of those is going to go in for her real soon.
Their conditioning looks great.
They look like marathon runners.
It is now time to get in the weight room and bulk up a little so we don't get pushed around.
Go Pilots!
