I noticed that as a freshman he averaged 3.9 ppg, 24 ppg as a sophomore, 18.4 ppg as a junior, and started off his senior season with 34 points. Wow! Shocked

Well if playing like Pooh includes bringing the ball up the court through any press with rare turnovers and then getting the Pilots into their offense early in the shot clock I am all for it and not at all concerned that he is not taller.

Wintering's ability to shoot threes is Pooh-ding on the cake.

Mr. Wintering, the Pilots will be short on point guards next fall so we look forward to your addition.

Go Pilots.

Now that he's signed, it can be known that among the many reasons Alec signed is, in his opinion, there will be no other "true" PG at UP next season. He's said that UP, "has a 2 at the 1 this season."

He probably heard that somewhere during the recruiting process (not necessarily from any of the UP coaches). He's probably correct, but at least our 2 is doing pretty well as a 1; so far better than the assumed 1, Mr. Rodgers.

No, no, no....that's Mr. ROGERS

Wow, we are going to have a ton of expectations for a freshman PG to help a team full of upper class bigs and wings next year.

Welcome, Alec, and good luck!

Alec Wintering had a memorable high school basketball season debut at home against Durham Mount Zion.

Wintering, a 5-foot-9 senior guard committed to Portland, scored 34 points in an 82-72 victory. Wintering had five rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win for United Faith, which has a huge game Saturday night at home against Kennedy Charter.
Well, United Faith and point guard Alec Wintering won their "huge game" against Kennedy Charter School 88-55 Saturday evening.

Alec scored 13 points and had 19 assists for the Falcons (2-0), who broke open a close game in the second half.

Um, wow. Didn't see the game, but that would appear to be good court vision. Shocked

An interesting line for our (young) man Alec last night.

After a three hour bus ride his team won their third game of the season 57-52……..and Alec took only 1 shot and made it, and took 8 free throws, making all 8. Alec also had 5 assists and 7 rebounds, but on the negative side he had 3 turnovers and 4 personal fouls.

Kind of fun to watch Alec…..always looking for positive basketball performances even if they’re not at UP (yet).

Wintering was a Charlotte Observer player of the week: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/11/26/3690341/players-of-the-week.html

According to the stats on maxpreps.com, Wintering is averaging 18.1 points and 7.6 assists per game and his team is 7-2.

He's only attempted six three balls all year...but is shooting 71% from the field?? That is an exceptionally high percentage for a guard which likely indicates he slashes to the hoop a LOT.

Look like they have a big game coming up tomorrow against Gaston Day.

The lack of productivity of our current set of guards is the primary reason the team struggles so. Not only is the shooting inconsistent, but we do not have anyone making plays by slashing and dishing, who is difficult for defenses at the D1 level to corral. If I am being too hard on the current crop, I do not mean to do so: the arrival of a point who can jump start the sputtering offensive motor is welcome.

Go get it Alec Wintering. Keep "slash[ing] to the hoop a LOT."

Ha ha. Rev recently tweeted Alec a picture of his coach, 5'3" Muggsy Bogues…Alec’s reaction was as expected: “haha tight shorts….”

The 1986 USA World Championship Team, comprised of young collegians, captured the 1986 FIBA World Championship gold medal, toppling the Soviets by two points, 87-85, in the gold medal contest.

Believe me, young PN members, topping the Soviet Union in anything during the Cold War was uppermost in the minds of many….different times.

Our man Alec had missed a number of games after Christmas with a broken finger, so it was good to see he was back in the lineup for a big rivalry game this evening. Smile

Alec led all scorers with 21 and his United Faith team won.

Apparently Alec's season is over...United Faith is in the second year of a two-year postseason ban that it got for some email sent out a couple of years ago. Not sure if that was discussed earlier this thread but here's the link - Postseason ban

Final stats for the year...averaged 16.7 ppg, 6.3 assists per game, 3.4 steals per game to help United Faith to an 18-5 overall record (8-0 in league). MaxPreps also says he shot 80% from the field for the year but that's gotta be a mistake, right?
