Cox, Rapinoe Named to USA Women’s World Cup Roster

CHICAGO, Ill. --- Former University of Portland women’s soccer stars Stephanie Cox (nee Lopez) and Megan Rapinoe will get to shine on the world stage as they were two of 21 players named to the United States roster for the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup by head coach Pia Sundhage on Monday. Cox is one of six players who will be making their second World Cup appearance, while Rapinoe will make her World Cup debut this summer in Germany.

The Pilots are also expected to have two former players named to the Canadian World Cup roster in team captain Christine Sinclair and starter Sophie Schmidt. The four former players would be the most in University of Portland history at a single World Cup.

Cox, who took part in the 2007 World Cup and helped the U.S. win the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, is one of the most experienced players on the roster. Her 71 international caps are eighth highest on the roster. Cox played for Portland from 2003-07 and helped the Pilots to an undefeated season and NCAA Championship in 2005. She was a three-time All-American defender during her time on The Bluff. She is currently playing for the Boston Breakers of the WPS.

Rapinoe is a rising star on the U.S. National Team and in Women’s Professional Soccer. This will be her first World Cup appearance, but the Redding, Calif. native has scored 10 goals in 28 career appearances with the senior national team. Rapinoe teamed with Cox during Portland’s 2005 championship run and concluded her collegiate career with 30 goals and 28 assists, despite missing nearly half of her career due to injuries and national team commitments. She is currently a member of the Philadelphia independence of the WPS.

The 2011 U.S. Women’s World Cup Team finished a three-week training camp in Florida last Friday and will arrive in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday to begin training for a two-game series against fellow Women’s World Cup qualifier Japan taking place on May 14 at Columbus Crew Stadium (6:30 p.m. ET on FOX Soccer and FOX Deportes) and May 18 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. (7 p.m. ET on ESPN2).

The USA will play its Women’s World Cup Send-Off Match on June 5 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. (2 p.m. ET on ESPN2) before the players go on a break. The U.S. team will leave for Austria in mid-June for a pre-Women’s World Cup training camp.

The USA, which has been drawn into Group C with Korea DPR, Colombia and Sweden, opens its tournament on June 28 in Dresden against the Koreans in a match that will be broadcast live on ESPN at 11:45 a.m. ET.
