WNT Blog & CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers
Unique Moment - Posted 10/29/2010
"It's not often a winning team would enter the opponent's locker room, especially after a World Cup qualifying match, but that's exactly what happened tonight in Cancún, Mexico after the USA's 5-0 win over Haiti.
The island nation is still recovering from the devastating earthquake of last January 12 that reduced much of the country to rubble and took an estimated 230,000 lives, injured more than 300,000 and left one million homeless.
To do their small part to help the Haitians, each U.S. player brought extra soccer gear, cleats, clothes, toiletries and other comfort items to Mexico and passed them on to the Haitians after the match. In a bit of a role reversal, the U.S. WNT followed the path set by the U.S. Under-17 WNT, which brought similar gifts for the Haitians during the U-17 CONCACAF Qualifier last March in Costa Rica."

The US plays Guatemala in a World Cup Qualifier today at 5:30pm PST after beating Haiti 5-0. Abby scored three goals in that win! "It was probably my worst three-goal performance of all time. I hit a wall about the 70th minute so I have to hit the recovery and get my legs back under me so I can come back in two days time.” Other goal scorers were Rachel Buehler and Amy Rodriguez.

US is up 6-0 at the half. Two goals each by Megan Rapinoe, Abby Wambach, and Amy Rodriguez!
Re: WNT Blog & CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers
9-0 was the final.
Arod got a hat trick. The game wasn't that close.

I just found out that you can watch the CONCACAF games live online at http://www.concacaf.com.
Canada is leading Guyana 1-0 with ~15 min. to go in the first half.

Thanks for the headsup. I turned it on just in time to see Christine score a nice goal. It looks like Sophie might be playing central back, but I'm not sure.

Sophie looked like she was holding mid again to ,e. but when a team has the lead, it's tough to tell sometimes.

Our other National team is in the semi's, too
Canada beat Mexico 3:0 tonight to advance to the Semi's against Costa Rica. The US will play Mexico.
They did it on goals from Chapman, Tancredi, and Bélanger.
Christine and Sophie played the whole game. Canada thus avoided the unenviable position of having to beat the USA to get to the World Cup.
the full game report with hightlights is here:
http://www.canadasoccer.com/tourney/game_profile.asp?gameId=1873
and the inteview with the team Captain ...

Re: WNT Blog & CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers
Well, we are now hoeing the hard row.
Mexico beat the USA 2-1 yesterday and the US must now must beat Costa Rica on Monday and a two game set with Italy over Thanksgiving to get to the World cup.
That's doable, but not like they played yesterday.
http://www.concacaf.com/page/WGC/VideosDetail/0,,12813~2209890,00.html
the only bright side is that Megan contributed to the lone US goal with a shot Abbie put away on the rebound.
On a brighter note, Canada punched their ticket to the WWC by beating Costa Rica 4-0. Sophie and Christine both played the whole game, Christine got a goal, and I think an assist.
http://www.concacaf.com/page/WGC/VideosDetail/0,,12813~2209889,00.html
They play Mexico for the championship on Monday. they beat Mexico 3-0 the first game of the tournament.
I was sort of hoping to root for two teams next summer. it might not happen.

The O's Geoffrey Arnold extends his excellent coverage of the sport to this event:
http://www.oregonlive.com/timbers/index.ssf/2010/11/free_kicks_us_women_shocked_by.html
He does a good job of providing the background on how big of an upset this is. The women's team missing the WC is a sobering thought.

Re: WNT Blog & CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers
After reading the article, I just realized that the Mexican player who scored the game winner against the USA was the Huskie's former player Veronica Perez.
Arnold mentions we beat Costa Rica 2-0 and need to beat Italy to get to the WWC.
He doesn't mention we have to beat them again tomorrow for third place to get that right.

Re: WNT Blog & CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers
and the woman who scored the first goal got her wish (except for the manly league part): http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2005/jan/05/womensfootball.sport
I know this is a big shocker but it was inevitable with how women's football has been advancing. Same thing that I've been saying on these boards about the Pilots and other top tier programs, there are more women playing in youth leagues, colleges and professionally across the planet and the equality of players is causing changes in the game. The pilots have some great young players but no matter who you match up against, you are now playing against players that have vast experience. Chances are few and far between and the magical finishers are in great demand. US will beat Costa Rica tomorrow and Italy in the home and away but the gap is closing, in the world and at Merlo.

Re: WNT Blog & CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers
The second half is starting. Still 0-0
Sophie is on the back line. It looks like she's often in the middle of a 3 back line sometimes, but it's hard to tell because the frame doesn't cover the whole back.

Red card on A Mex defender for hand ball of the line. ( nice keeper move- a stretch to push the ball over the crossbar)
Sinclair scores the PK. 1-0
Now Canada definitely has 4 in the back.

Sophie got banged up and stayed down for a while near the end, I was getting nervous. She got back up and seemed to be all right. Good win for Canada.

Re: WNT Blog & CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers
Canada is the Concacaf champs, the final was 1:0
The canadians went over to applaud the Mexican crowd and got boo'd.
A little lesson in Latin American sportsmanship when it comes to Fútbol
Sinclair could be heard exclaiming to her coach "they BOO'D us!!! Can you believe it?"
Ya Christine, I believe it.

The Canadians were unscored upon in the tournament. Sophie anchored the middle of the back line.

The Americans are collecting their 3rd place medals. Alex Morgan was voted "la más guapa" for the tournament by the Mexican announcers.
