UP Tournament Teams Announced
Some of you may already know this, but UP will be hosting a four-team tournament next season, I believe in November.
According to this blog, the teams have been announced:
http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports/college/fau/blog/2010/05/guest_blog_1_fau_hoops_update.html
The Owls being Florida Atlantic, coached by Mike Jarvis.
Lots of regional diversity in the group, and playing a Horizon League team (UW-Milwaukee) is great. FAU is in the Sun Belt, UC-Davis in the Big West.
Not a bad grouping of mid-majors, and should be a nice early season barometer of where our young team is at.
According to this blog, the teams have been announced:
The Owls will also participate in a pre-season tournament in Oregon hosted by University of Portland amidst fellow participants UW-Milwaukee and UC Davis. Which brings us to our last stop…

I love that we are hosting a tournament... good deal. Now, if we can just add that date at the Rose Garden...

If this years tournament sells out, I'm sure next year in the Garden would be considered.

Last time the Pilots hosted a tournament?
I can't remember when. Can anyone recall how long it has been?

Re: UP Tournament Teams Announced
I've thought it would be fun to host a couple games in the Memorial Coliseum...especially games against other Northwest teams. I can't imagine the Rose Quarter would charge as much for that arena.
Although I am sure students and people in the neighborhood would not feel the same way.

If students attended games next year
in any numbers at all, I could see how they would be considered in a decision.
Right now, though, I'm sure they aren't even on the long distance radar as a factor.

Plus the school could use the extra revenue from the larger arenas to bus students there...

Re: UP Tournament Teams Announced
Love the optimism!
But baby steps here, people... if nothing else, a tournament like this allows us to play a few more games on our home court than we would be able to otherwise (I believe, according to NCAA rules, teams can play up to three games in a tournament each year and have it count as only one game of the allowable number played), which will be a great thing to do early in the season with our young team.
However, a revival of the NW Shootout, with all four D-1 teams in Oregon at the Memorial Coliseum? Now THAT would be a beautiful thing.

Re: UP Tournament Teams Announced
NW Shootout would be a very cool idea to revive, but I don't know, I think in many ways getting exposure to different teams and styles from around the country is a good thing too. Haha and, well, I just don't see UO or OSU agreeing to that any time soon...
As mentioned the competitive advantage of a tourney getting more games in is very cool, and you gotta love a bonus for season ticket holders getting some games against quality opponents. You have to start somewhere, and all of these teams come from good national leagues, plus you gotta love the chance to heckle the Johnnie killer Mike Jarvis... Er, I mean say positive things about his sweet bald dome and goatee combination...
If you schedule it, they will come... It worked for Kevin Costner right?

Speaking of:
This is exactly what we need!
CoachReveno: Still working on finalizing schedule. A few more pieces to put in place but 2010-11 will be the best home schedule in school history.

Re: UP Tournament Teams Announced
Yes, I do believe this will be a tremendous home schedule, especially since the WCC as a whole will be improved - GU and SMC, of course, but LMU, USF, and SCU could all be strong as well.

Stonehouse your last comment [especially since the WCC as a whole will be improved - GU and SMC, of course, but LMU, USF, and SCU]
got me thinking, will the WCC be improved next year? My initial reaction is the top three teams will be down a little bit next year with the losses of Bouldin, Samhan, and the UP seniors. Perhaps the league will have more parity top to bottom, but I am not sure the top teams will be as strong as last year. I am curious to know what everyone's take is on this.

There's enough in that one post for 2 or 3 threads.
Great post Stonehouse. I can't say I disagree with any of it. When does the season start?

Does a game at the Rose Garden count as a home game? I am willing to wager there will be more than a few UK fans there...

Re: UP Tournament Teams Announced
For purposes of RPI, it counts as a Home Game only if we play 3 or moré games there in a season.
