Very cool! Too bad there's not a runner up spot. Oregon State's coach deserves some credit too... Of course, a lot of what Smith does is great recruiting to keep the machine rolling.

Keeping a quality program strong and competitive each year, while graduating great young people is no mean feat.
Bravo, Garrett!

Re: Garrett is West region COY
Garrett Smith suffers poorly compared to Clive Charles, his esteemed predecessor. He has an inferiority complex. This would explain his total lack of graciousness, sour grapes, excuses and whining in his streak of exits from the playoffs. But he has done a great job of recruiting talent to sustain a Top 8 program. He just can't get a top player like Christine Sinclair to even get to the final four. Not many of the best would go with Portland over Stanford. It's a very competitive job market now in these harsh times. Going out there with a degree from a second tier school isn't the smartest thing to do. Parents know this. (And please, don't bring out the U.S. News university rankings and say Portland is at the top of the list of "smaller schools." That's why they have a list of top colleges, which would include the Wellesleys of the world. Pepperdine is a smaller school than Portland and always ranks among the top national universities; Portland does not. Portland is on the west region list of, ahem, "good" schools.) Who knows? Maybe Pilot fans have the same inferiority complex as Smith. It must be the rain.

Sinclair Fan you really need to get yourself a talk radio show. You have the act down perfectly. Say outrageous things and then sit back and watch folks react.

Re: Garrett is West region COY
What is particularly troubling about Smith is that he just might believe what he spews. The Pilot team goes 80 minutes without a shot or a corner kick and he thinks he was the victim of bad luck in losing? He was praying to send a game into overtime against a team that was out-playing his. And he talks about bad luck. Parents of top recruits can sense his lack of class. He inherited a championship team with Sinclair and he has it now sputtering as a perennial quarterfinal loser.

Haha... SinclairFan:
What in the bleep does the size of UP or the US News and World Report rankings have to do with Garrett Smith's ability as a coach? Please explain. Is Pepperdine suddenly the WCC school competing with us for soccer recruits...not SCU? You are thought provoking and insightful.

Obviously Sinc Fan doesn't know a thing about UP and is trying to stir up the pot. Garrett is a great coach.

Re: Garrett is West region COY
Sorry folks but I had to chime in on this negative bantering back and forth. The voting for NSCAA coach of the year by region is obviously by no means related to the size of the school or how News and World Reports ranks the school.
As a parent, I know first hand that students select shool for various reasons and if you look closely at rankings, they break rankings down by any number of categores. They rank schools by majors, (i.e. engineering, liberal arts, etc.) which schools offer PHD's vs schools that only offer Masters, large schools vs small schools, financial aid, tuition assistance, etc as well as the overall school
Also, believe or not, studets also choose schools based on thier intented major (imagine that!)
My point is, students taken into consideration many reasons, including sports as to a reason why they choose one school over another.
No one would argue that a Stanford is an excellent school but I for one would also say that Stanford is not for everyone nor can everyone get into Stanford. But being a high quality school that can attract the best athletes does not necessarily guarantee that they will have a wining program.
What has not been addressed here is that the chemistry of a team plays a very important role in the sucess of a team and no matter how many top recruits you have comming into a program, if they don't play together as a team, they won't be successful. Perhaps, the individuals who voted on the coaching awards take that into consideration and gives coaches credit in that area!
Ok I've said my peace. Happy Holiday's
