Re: Natalie Budge
She has signed with the Portland Rain which is a Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) team. From my understanding the WPSL is a step better than the W league which is pure amateur but not quite as professional as the new WPS. It is a mystery to me why she left Germany so soon as she was doing well playing there. I guess don't look a gift horse in the mouth because you can see her play locally for the Rain. I would have named the team the Reign but thats another story.

Hey AP - Rain is a good name for a Portland team - very apt. It would also be for a team here in Syracuse. Cloudy would be another apt name. How about the Portland overcast? Reign does have a lot more oomph to it, for sure.

Well Reign was the name of the defunct ABL team up in Seattle...

Re: Natalie Budge
I liked it because it is a homophone for Rain. The words rain and reign are pronounced the same but have different meanings. As in Portland reigns supreme in soccer even though it rains quite a bit. Reign also carries with it the majestic, as in Portland reigns supreme in soccer.
However, I can see why no Portlander would want anything to do with a scuttled name of a Washington team.
Let me ask you guys a question. Do Oregonians dislike California teams as much as they seem to dislike Washington teams? In California we kind of keep the hate local. Like UCLA hates USC or people from the west side better not get caught slipping in the east side or bad things can happen.
California is funny though. Southern Californians generally like Northern Californians but Northern Californians exhibit a great disdain for those from the south. (something about stealing water and having no culture).
I prefer Portland over the rest of Oregon but I prefer Oregon over Washinton and British Columbia over Washington as well. Maybe its because that swill known as Olympia Beer used to come from Tacoma?

Actually Tumwater (not Tacoma), but it's still in production now...
In Southern California!!! Irwindale to be exact... (The same place also produces Rainier now too, gotta love the Pabst company...)

I don't know about California teams, but there is definitely a general disdain for California here (at least in Portland). When I moved here I had California plates on my car for a while, and I used to get some flack for it. Plus you hear the occasional idiot talking about Californians "ruining" everything.

In all honestly I never really knew there was a "Cali angst" so to speak... Oregonians definitely have their issues with their neighbors to the north and south...

It's the water that makes Olympia Beer!
I actually like Northern California and the 49ers, Giants, A's, Sharks, Stanford, and Cal just fine. San Francisco is a great city. It's SoCal I'm not that big a fan of, especially USC football and the dreaded Lakers. It's not all bad; I kind of like UCLA, and the Galaxy are always good for a laugh.

USC.. As in University of Spoiled children? I'm not sure that it's hate for California teams more than it's and small population mass competing against BIG California. UofP hates UW though!

If they know it's the water, why don't they do something about it?
To me Portland Rain is a great American regional name in the tradition of heavy weather --Lightning, Hurricanes, Tornadoes -- as opposed to the aristocratic, European "royal authority" of Reign.

I, for one, don't think Californians ruin everything - they are just ruining California.

Cry, all we have left is the weather and lots and lots of pretty women. Since I am married I only partake of the weather.

Re: Natalie Budge
ap,
you asked about teams from cali an how you feel about them, not about the residents themselves. As for residents from those states in general, I can't stand cali folks. As for the teams, as in of U of W an WSU, can't stand either of them, espcially U of W!!!
As an example of fuskie fan, a few years ago i went to a softball game between U of W an PSU. The fuskies were killing poor PSU an their coaches an fans were hammering the ump over balls an strikes. Typical fuskie fan!
So yes, I dislike calif resident, but I perfer them over fuskie fan/team any time!!
