What do you know? Empty What do you know?

Post by Geezaldinho Sun Jul 06, 2008 11:31 pm

We don't need no stinkin' archives. I'm sure those of you who still have some brain cells left will collectively be able to police the rest of us or we can look things up on the Santa Clara website.
Feel free to jump in here with your own stumpers.

I'll start out with what should be an easy one (or is it?)
First question:

everyone knows that Christine Sinclair owns the single season scoring title.

Can you name all the former Pilots who have lead the Nation is scoring? Bonus points for the year(s).

OK... the real question here is if it's anyone beyond the big three. I'm thinking no.

So...

Sinclair (2005)
Sinclair (2004)
Sinclair (2001)
MacMillan (1996)
Milbrett (1994)
Milbrett (1993)

That's my guess and I'm sticking to it.

Stoney, edit MacMillan's year because she was already gone for the '96 season. '95 was her last season on the bluff.

Bah. Remember, I was still in grade school when Tif and Shannon were playing... I've got an excuse for getting it all wrong! Smile

One more player, huh? Lots of different options... Tara Koleski or Justi Baumgart (spelled wrong, I know) come to mind. Or Wynn McIntosh. But maybe Lindsay Huie during Christine's redshirt year? Ah! I really don't know.

first the ones you got.

Tiff scored 30 goals in 1992 and 1994. She redshirted The '93 season. In '94 that was good enough for the title. There was somebody named Hamm who scored 32 goals in '92. The '94 tally was good enough to tie Mia's record of 103, but she got there in 72 games, where Mia played over 100.

Shannon was the most consistent. Starting in '92,she scored 19, 23, 22, and 23 times. In '93, the 23 goals was enough for the scoring title. In '94, she missed 4 games while she got a pin in her foot, missing only 13 days.

Starting in 1991,Christine scored 19,26,23, and the astounding 39, her 4 years. She redshirted in 2003. The two championship years, she won the title

The last player was Kim Engesser. She was a striker her first year (1995). Her second year Clive moved her to defense and it didn't "take. She asked Clive if she could play forward again and Clive said he needed her in the back, so she went to Nebraska to play with two club team mates of hers. In 1997 she scored 26 goals at Nebraska as a former Pilot Smile which was enough for the title and this trivia question. (the next year she scored 27 times.

Nebraska lost to UP in the NCAA playoffs in '97 at Merlo. It was a big story at the time, I'm surprised you don't remember.

Geezer, that nebraska game didn't have happened in '97. Portland went out in the first round to UCLA that year, 1-0. The game you are thinking of was the '96 season, where they won to get into the final four. then engesser transferred and the pilots didn't play nebraska again until 1998.

OK, I'm home, I don't have to tap away on the iPhone.

For those of you who are interested, Kim Engesser's bio is on the Nebraska site at Kim's Bio

(in case you haven't figured it out, I'm still pissed about the archive thing)

I got the year she led the Nation right.

KFTC set me straight with the year UP beat Nebraska in the Playoffs . It was 1996 in a game that Engesser started with the Pilots. If memory serves me right, Reggie Holan, another transfer out, scored the winning goal. final score (1-0)

KFTC, can you check that?

The year she played against the Pilots was a regular season game in 1998 when the teams tied at Nebraska, (1-1).
I remember trying to get info on the game the same day. Back then, it was nearly impossible. I remember calling an administrator at UP to see if I could get an answer (names withheld to protect the innocent).

The regular season game at Merlo I was thinking about actually happened in 1995 (Sat. Sept 16) where we shellacked them 3-0. If I'm not mistaken, Kim scored a goal in that one.

Of course, there is no way I can check, because there is no...... well, you know. Mad

One of the reasons I picked it this particular question is because it is so hard to check. The NCAA doesn't keep a statistic on season leaders in their record book. All they show is the top 20 or so all time scorers. In order to check it out, you have to have some idea of what you are looking for and go to individual team or conference sites. Even then it's hard to check.

For example, if you go to the WCC site's record book, you will see that Tiff is listed as having 60 career NCAA goals, putting her in 5th place in the WCC.
Well, that's not right.
Sure, she only played two years when UP was part of the WCC, but she still played in the NCAA two more years, and they should be counted. Whoever compiled those statistics is clearly confused about the difference between NCAA and WCC records.

How can you be in 3rd place all time in the NCAA and in 5th place for your NCAA record in the WCC? Isn't the WCC part of the NCAA?
(i'll note further that other transfers into the WCC have their whole career records included)

I just thought up a new bbcode command Like the [quote] command that should be implemented to make this all a lot quicker.
I propose the [rant] command. It can come in two modes, the simple [rant] and the more specific [rant=1] mode, for when you want to rail on several fronts.
Both can be closed with the same [/rant] format.

Wadya think? drunken

Geez, for the '96 game it was a Stiles goal, assist from Holan...that's what the media guide says, but if memory serves me, Holan did a majority of the work and then left a tap-in for Stiles.

For the '95 game, you're right on the 3-0 score, but the media guides says Baumgardt, McIntosh (Baumgardt), Dutra (MacMillan) as the goal-scorers (and assisters).

For the '98 game, you'd be surprised to know I don't have a media guide for the '99 season so I can't check the goalscorer on that one. EDIT * - The Nebraska archives on their website says it was Talbott who scored in the '98 game. I'm sure the media guide is in my garage somewhere, but for whatever reason it's not in my filing cabinet in my house.

Time for the second question. This should be a bit easier, and if you can't get it from the start, a bit of persistence will yield results.
Up until the CCSC remodel, the names were on a signboard at the stadium.

The 2008 Olympic Games are less than a month away...
We all know that Christine, Sophie and Stephanie are in the 2008 games, but they haven't played yet.

Can you name all the Pilot soccer players (men and women) who have been in the Olympic games?
qualifiers don't count, and again, bonus points for the year(s)

On the Men's side:

Brad Freidel was the Keeper in '92, Kasey Keller wasn't selected, one of the mysteries of US Soccer. He did play in 1996.

Steve Cherundolo would have been about 16 in 1996, and may even have been underage. At any rate, he hasn't seen an Olympic Games.

Andrew Gregor hasn't been in an Olympics either, though he was captain of the 1997 World University Games team where the US placed third.

Stoney got the other three appearances right.

For the women:

Steph and Christine have yet to enter their first Olympics. This will be Canada's first games on the women's side (there have only been 3 games for women)

PurplePrideTrumpet got his guess on Macmillan right, she did also play in 1996. In fact, she was the leading US scorer for the games with 3 of the 9 tallies, even though she played limited minutes.

Otherwise, Stoney was pretty good here too.

But both of you missed one more Pilot Olympian......

Actually, the alternates DO travel with the team, in case of an injury to a rostered player. That's how Michelle French got her Olympics creds; if you look on the US Soccer site for the 2000 Olympic roster she's not on it, but she was an alternate and traveled to Sydney with the team.

Well. I'm including just the player that were in the Olympic games, and the source I used is fifa.com. They don't include alternates, as they require FIFA permission to be included only in special circumstances (mostly medically certified injury to roster players). Alternates aren't even allowed on the field or on the bench until FIFA certifies them to play.

For the men in 2000, Brian isn't on the Sidney Men's roster

The Canadian men haven't qualified for the Olympic games since 1988 - I haven't checked before 1988 but I'm pretty sure the players you named wouldn't have been in earlier games. That leaves Rhode and Xausa out (and Danny Falcone). They we on the Canadian National team, but as I say, they didn't qualify.

Mac wasn't on the 2004 Athens fifa 2004 players list. She was an alternate and went to Athens., but was never certified that year.

In 2000 Michelle French WAS on the Sidney Games roster I don't think she played any minutes, but she was on the field and on the bench.

Steve Cherundolo, as KFTC points out, got hurt before the games. He might have been the difference that cost the USA a medal.

But there is still the mystery player. Answer soon.
