Gasp!.....NOOOOOOOOOO Empty Gasp!.....NOOOOOOOOOO

Post by Geezaldinho Sat Jul 05, 2008 8:00 pm

I though it might be nice to present a couple trivia questions to get the juices flowing before the season starts. I figured I'd better check my facts before I spouted off, so I went online to the Portlandpilots.com site to check the women's soccer archive.

Somebody "cleaned up". Nothing before 2001 exists any longer.

Tiffeny Milbrett --Gone.
Shannon Macmillan -- Gone!
Michelle French --Gone !
Justi Baumgardt -- GONE!
Their names are only in the short History section.

From the History or any other link, there is no way to tell that Tia Sharp, Kristen Eaton, , Wynne McIntosh, Melissa Ribaudo ever existed.
the same with 99% of the other players.
Welcome to the dustbin of history, ladies.

GAAAAH!

I can now find out more about these players and the rest from the Notre Dame or Nebraska sites than I can from the Pilot's site.
I had to go to the WCC site to make sure I spelled Wynne's name right.

It's a shame.

Who takes care of this? I'd like to send them a definition of the word "archive"

Tragic, isn't it? I think our affable Sports Information Director is responsible for web content and maintenance. I think. I am happy to be corrected on that point if it is not true...

Geezer, I have some old media guides you can pick through if you want; or I can do some fact-checking in them to corroborate your trivia questions. Oh, and don't forget to capitalize the first "I" in Wynne's last name: McIntosh. Smile

From Wikipedia:

An archive refers to a collection of historical records, and also refers to the location in which these records are kept.
Archives are made up of records (AKA primary source documents) which have been accumulated over the course of an individual or organization's lifetime.

~~~~~~~~
In general, archives of any individual or organization consist of records which have been especially selected for permanent or long-term preservation, due to their enduring research value. Archival records are normally unpublished and almost always unique, unlike books or magazines, in which many identical copies exist.
Maybe we should start a Portland Pilot wiki to attach to this forum...i think the users would be way more accurate because there's no way any of us would ever embellish on our memories of pilot athletics...
"why I remember one game when the student section threw flares on the field at the UNC players!"
"I am positive we had at least 30 shots on goal against Notre Dame that one time..."
"do you remember when Shannon MacMillan flicked the ball to herself to score against Pepperdine? She flicked over her head and then did a bicycle kick!" "or when Wynne McIntosh hit that 45-yard game-winning bomb against Duke at Merlo?" Oh wait...that last one is actually true. Very Happy
I'm with you guys. This situation isn't right. No
They're probably trying to free up computer data space, but an organization this big should have enough archive space big enough to drive a train through.
Somebody missed the boat on this. Any way to fix it or is it permanent? I have no clout there. Anybody on this board in a postition to figure out why this happened, and if it's reversible? As a supporting group to the program, we have the right to at least let our feelings be known. I can't imagine anyone liking this move. It doesn't make any sense. scratch
Computer memory is incredibly cheap these days. For a couple of hundred bucks they could buy enough memory to keep all the stats for all sports for years and years and years. Let's hope its just an administrative mis-judgement and not a matter of money.
Memory doesn't appear to be the issue. the information is still available -- sort of.
If you type in a name in the search box (say, Wynne) you'll get pages of documents to check through.
That's just the problem. Data that isn't organized is just trash. and the search feature isn't implemented in a way that you can sort through data.
If you know how to tune the google search engine, you can get more information. for instance, you can enter
:Wynne McIntosh: site:www.portlandpilots.com 1996
and you'll narrow things down, but it's still not organized.
