US dominates Canada 6-0

Post by purple haze on Sun May 11, 2008 4:52 pm

Looks like the US women ran all over Canada this weekend. [url=http://ussoccer.com/articles/viewArticle.jsp_6356992.html] Not only did the US get the big win and a hat trick from Natasha Kai, they held Canada to 2 shots in the game. 2 shots ... that's a sober "happy hour."

According to the game summary Stephanie Cox was available but did did not play. On the Canadian side, Sophie Schmidt played the first half and Christine Sinclair played the full 90,

I worship the grass that Christine runs on, so I never like to see her shut out even by "us." My unofficial statistics based on the Canada team's Web site show how hard it has been for Canada to compete vs. the U.S. recently. In the 21 or so games between the full national teams in the Sinclair Era, the U.S. owns a record of 16 wins, 2 losses, 3 draws. Christine has scored 5 goals. (Again, these are my unofficial stats, so don't sue me.) Goes to show how even a dominant player and scorer can't necessarily tilt the balance of power decisively at the highest level of the sport. Clearly Canada lacks the huge player pool of the US. Anyone out there have insight into the strengths and weaknesses, strategies and tactics of the Canadian women?

The weakness is Even Pellerud. I think he's taken Canada as far as he can.

I could cry when I think of how Sinc's talents are going to waste on the CWNT, not to mention those of her talented teammates. I was telling my new-to-women's-soccer friend at the game that Christine is one of the greatest players in the world, but you'd never know it by the way Canada plays. I don't think they had a single idea of what to do offensively or defensively. Canada never looked dangerous.

As far as the play of Sinc... well, she did what she could. She was stuck in the midfield for a huge portion of the game, and while she is very capable, I don't think it suits her.

Sophie played a good half and had some good distribution in the holding midfield role. It is interesting to note that Canada gave up 5 goals in the second half while Sophie was on the bench. While I'm sure she wants to play for her country in the Olympics, I wish she would stay in Portland this summer, where they'll most certainly treat her better.

As a US fan, I was hugely pleased. That was the best offensive game I have seen from them in a very long time and the varied attack reminded me of the Pilots. I would have loved to see Steph play, however, if only so she could take the corner kicks. Lloyd (who had a great game otherwise) did extremely poorly on all of hers.

The games I've seen Canada play in- they don't know how to use her.

For a long time they put her up top by herself, then just punted the ball up there and expected her to create something alone - no support. Lately, since they haven't been able to get her the ball, (I saw a couple games where she only got one touch) they've put her in the midfield, where she not only has to win the ball, but do the creating and the finishing.

I think Pellerud has no idea how to use her talent or maximize its effect.

Even so, she's on pace to easily be the greatest scorer of all time.

I drove from PA to attend this game on Saturday. The Canadian team looked tired and none of their players really stood out. Sinclair seemed to be stuck in the midfield. The usa team looked good. I took some pictures from the game.http://s188.photobucket.com/albums/z200/eamaral70/Usa%20v%20Canada%205-10-2008/

Thanks for the insights into the Canada team. Sinclair at midfield smacks of a crime against nature; maybe Pellerud needs to tap his helmet, check her biography and remember her best position. Guess we can hope for a change of coach. One of the most stunning upsets I've ever seen was 2003 World Cup here in Portland when Canada shut down China 1-0. PGE Park was electric at halftime with disbelieving fans asking each other, "Can they hold on? Can they really do it?" Yes to both. Great night.
