Stanford Coach Search Update Empty Stanford Coach Search Update

Not good news. From Andy Katz today:

• Stanford is reaching out across the country trying to see if there is interest from a plethora of people. There were so many names that were queried about -- from Johnny Dawkins at Duke, to Chris Lowery at Southern Illinois, to Paul Hewitt at Georgia Tech -- that it appears Stanford is trying to do anything but hire one of its own in Eric Reveno (Portland), Blaine Taylor (Old Dominion) or Doug Oliver (Stanford assistant). While housing help can aid in landing a coach, the simple fact that the salary isn't competitive enough to match the cost of living and the limited pool of players makes it less attractive to those that don't know how Stanford works. That's why it wouldn't shock anyone if one of the aforementioned three coaches lands the gig once it settles down.

And then this from yesteday:

• Stanford will have an interesting decision to make. Will it continue to go for the news conference hire or will it go with a coach who knows how to tap the limited pool of top student-athletes who can get into the school? Efforts to get Gonzaga's Mark Few and McKillop weren't successful.

Larry Brown is no longer a candidate for the job, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com's Dana O'Neil. Tulsa's Doug Wojcik, a Navy grad, would understand the culture there. But if Stanford wants to go with someone who truly does understand what it's like to be there, then Portland's head coach Eric Reveno, current Stanford assistant Doug Oliver and Old Dominion's Blaine Taylor -- all who were assistant coaches under former Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery -- would make sense.

All have talked to athletic director Bob Bowlsby. One name that also would be intriguing is Bruce Weber at Illinois. Weber is a fantastic coach who wouldn't have to deal with the major summer league nonsense at Stanford as he does at a place like Illinois.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like Stanford has tried and failed to get the names at the top of their list. And if the salary they are offering isn't competitive enough to land a big-time coach, then it is no surprise they might end up with someone from their "family".

This is making me more and more nervous every day.

I dont like how this story keeps hanging around, either... Evil or Very Mad

But I really dont see how Stanford would hire a coach who really has yet to prove himself... I think if the team does well next season, then the proof will be in the pudding so to speak, and Rev would be seen as a viable candidate for other positions. But to date, the W-L record just isnt there (as we all are so painfully aware).

I would be MUCH more worried if this was happening one year from now... but with as crazy as coaching changes have been of late, who knows... Question

Agreed. I think Taylor would have to be looked at as the favorite, because he has seen success at Old Dominion.

Oliver... I don't think so. His W-L record at Idaho State was not impressive (he was there for seven years or so), he's a bit older, and he missed the glory years at Stanford.

If they do end up with one of these three, I would put the list as Taylor, Reveno, Oliver.

But the big thing that makes me nervous is Reveno's proven track record of recruiting big-time talent to Stanford, and the fact that he is such a good and likeable guy. I can't imagine that anyone who has worked with Reveno for an extended period of time can come way with anything but positive impressions of him as a person and as a worker.

Ah! But maybe I'm just being paranoid. It would indeed be tough to imagine Stanford hiring a guy with Rev's W-L record.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

Seriously, this was making me very, very nervous. Praise the Lord! Reports are saying Rev was one of three finalists... we definitely dodged a big, big bullet here.

The future of Pilot basketball is still looking good!
