Fennah Resigns at OSU

Steve Fennah has resigned at Oregon State to return to teaching at Jesuit. See the sports section in today's Oregonian. Does anyone know why

He might get more money at Jesuit.

My guess is he thought he had taken USU as far as he could with the current facilities and recruiting budget.

It'll be interesting to see what USU's next step is...

OSU got a commitment from a highly regarded keeper last week, Brittney Sheffield. It will be interesting to see what happens with that.

i cant imagine jesuit being able to pay fennah more then osu. i personally think he did an outstanding job at osu. if i were him, an of course im not, i would prefer to be comfortable over money, but that's easy for me to say since i dont have any money!!
i love what osu an u of o has done with their womens programs, an i hope that osu can hire a quality coach so that our beloved pilots dont have to travel for the ncaa's despite our superior record!!! an i dont mean to slight psu, i remember laura schott at jesuit. i so wished she had gone to u of p. this may b a good thing for u of p in regards to the ncaa's. strong programs with in 150 miles. go state of oregon, but more importantly,goooooooooooooo pilots!!!!

I do believe Geezer wasn't being serious with his remark about Fennah making more money as a high school teacher. I think he was probably taking a gentle swipe at a big-budget school who has to put more money and attention into their "revenue producing" sports than the "non-revenue" ones. Especially where the budget (recruiting and traveling) us concerned.

Fortunately, UP doesn't seem to distinguish one from the other and has managed to keep the soccer programs somewhere close to the ballpark the basketball programs are in budgetarily speaking--not IN the same ballpark, but close...they are probably in neighboring zip codes.

But there is some measure of truth to the supposition. OSU doesn't spend all that much for women's soccer, especially for a school in a major conference.
OSU spends 1.67 times what UP does in Men's Basketball, and about 30% less than UP in women's soccer, and the ratio of funding for athletically related student aid for Men/women at OSU is 58/42. At UP the ratio is 46/54.
And UP gives out more scholarship money than OSU does per participant. (Of course, it costs more to attend UP.)

So the supposition that OSU is a big money bin for a sport like women's soccer just isn't so.




The UP Women's Soccer team doesn't do as well as the Men's Basketball team, but it probably does better comparatively than almost any school in the Nation, and better than most Non-revenue sports as compared to its school's Basketball or Football program.

If you compute for games played, the University spends about as much for men's basketball as women's soccer.

Women's soccer doesn't (yet) get the revenue the men's basketball team does, either. Basketball has a large revenue stream from the NCAA (mostly kickbacks for March Madness, the NCAA's big moneymaker).

What UP does do particularly well is fund the men's and women's programs equivalently. Here's the data from the office of Postsecondary education.

That's WAY better than most schools.

According to The Oregonian, Linus Rhode has been named head coach at Oregon State. He was the associate head coach with Fennah.
