u23's vs England
the USA u 23's won the first game of a two game matchup with England's u23's 1-0
Kelsey played the second half.
I'm not sure exactly what that means, but it sounds generally good.

In the 69th minute, DiMartino slammed a shot off the right post at the upper corner. With six minutes left England had their best chance, but goalkeeper Kelsey Davis stoned with English attacker with a great one-on-one save.

i saw that too geezer, an what i took from that is that kelsey made a spectacular save!!! how many times does a keeper beat the offensive player?? i also noticed that the coach of the team is bill irwin. i wonder if he wasnt the coach of the team, how much time kelsey would actually receive?

Kelsey and Val Henderson have been splitting National team time for years. They've split it under Bill. they split it under Jillian, and they split it under Diccico.
At one point, Val was the #1 at UCLA and Kelsey was the #1 on the u20's (or maybe it was the u19's)
She's playing because she has talent.

u23's win again
The u23's played England and won the second game of the two game series also.
This time they won it 2-nil.
Kelsey Davis and Val Henderson again split the game. I think it was a yawner for them , as England only had 3 shots.
They then headed home, so we should see Kelsey the team perform in spring ball soon.

Re: u23's vs England
this might be blasphemy,
but i have thought from the first time i saw kelsey, she was a better keeper then corey. it wasnt until corey's senior season that i trusted her. it seemed to me that she 'thought to much'. kelsey on the other hand just reacts! i will take reaction an instinct over thinking anytime.
let my comments not be lost that by corey's senior season i trusted her more than ever. she made tremendous strides. but comparatively, at this stages in their careers. kelsey is hands down the better keeper.
i guess this goes back to the angela harriuson/cheryl loveless debate i raised on a previous thread. while both were talented, everyone has their preference. mine was cheryl. to each their own, doesnt mean anyone is right or wrong.

Re: u23's vs England
I'm always a little loath to compare players who can't be compared directly. Better to appreciate each for what they gave to the program.
I might suggest that your distrust of Cory until her Senior year might have more to do with you than it does with Cory.
She did win us a National title with some pretty spectacular play her Junior year - especially in the shootouts. She didn't get tested earlier in the season because the Pilots were so good she never saw the ball. That doesn't mean she wasn't any good.
As to the right and wrong thing- well, I think I'm always right
It was a JOKE!

Re: u23's vs England
Wait... isn't it spelled Cori?
I tend to agree with Fozzie on this one. I think Cori's coming out party was the 2005 playoffs, especially in the shootout but she made some tremendous saves in the Penn State game before it even got to that point too.
From that point on, she was an absolute wall. But before that point, I think she might have lacked a little bit of confidence and would hesitate in making decisions, which would sometimes lead to mistakes. Now, she's still an all-time great and was a supreme talent, but I think it wasn't until the playoffs that year that she truly reached her potential. And after that point, there was no stopping her.
When you think about it, UP has been spoiled for a very long time with outstanding keepers, both on the men's and the women's side. And really you've got to credit Bill Irwin for finding those players and developing them. And speaking of which... we should be due to bring on a new goalkeeping coach pretty soon, so keep your eyes open for that.

Re: u23's vs England
Maybe Korie? no wait--that's the defender

Cori didn't just appear for the playoffs. Here's the stats for 2005
That's 9 goals in 119 shots faced, and that include 3 goals given up on PK's, which she's really not supposed to save. (she stopped 2 shots on Pk's in the Penn State game)
6 goals given up in the run of play all year.
But stats aren't everything. Ruth Gilliam had a .31 average that year, but she only Played 290 minutes, compared to Cori's 2006 minutes.

Anyone have video of that shoot out? I was on the verge of a heart attack the whole time, pacing the bar... I would love to see that again (the whole game, actually!) Cori was brilliant...

Re: u23's vs England
I bet one exists somewhere... I think I've got the championship game. Actually, I think I've got the 2002 championship too. Would be fun to post the game-winner on YouTube. I can still see it now... Kristen Moore streaking down the sideline, crossing it to Sinc, keeper's out... PILOTS WIN!!!!
And Geezer, hard to argue with stats like that. I guess I've got selective memory. One thing I know we'll agree on... Cori is one of the all-time great Pilots.

The best part of that play is the run of emotions during it.
Yay - Kristen steals the ball-
oh god, I hope she does something with it, the defender's closing-
Great cross to Christine! - she shoots!!!-
Gahhhh save-
Rebound! putback!!!! we winnnnn!!!!!!

Re: u23's vs England
My favorite part of the play was Moore "calling her shot;" just before she crosses, she looks up, sees Sinc and points right at her and then proceeds to hit her target precisely. Love it.

Re: u23's vs England
I agree with KFTC. I saw her call it, too. I've seen it on tape, but we were at the game and it was even more apparent from the near sideline.
A friend of our was watching the game on TV with his eight-year old daughter. He said she sat through the whole game, glued to the tube, not saying a word. The only thing she said was when Kristen stole the ball and started down the sideline - "This is it!"

Ah! Now I really want to watch it.
I'm not sure I have the right equipment to get a VHS tape into a digital format, but I know someone somwhere does... let's make it happen!

I don't have that game on tape, but if someone wants to get it to me, I have the equipment to make it happen. The only Portland games I have digitized are the playoff games from last fall, and I happen to have a copy of the 1998 semifinal game on DVD...how they were able to squeeze it on one disc, I have no idea.
