Saw this article myself, and I think my reaction was along the same lines as PilotNut's.

Yikes. Makes you appreciate the people we have at UP.

The Pilots have had some characters (Stretch Braxton?), but I doubt anything as egregious occurred as the shenanigans at UW. The most disturbing aspect to me is the seeming complicity of the prosecutor's office in ignoring these thuggish behaviors.

Another guy who I know got into some hot water while at UP was Peter McKelvey. I never did hear the whole story on what happened to him, but I think it had to do with some kind of sexual assault. But he was off the team right after that happened - no massive cover-up like that story talks about.

McKelvey was a heck of a player though... think he still has some single-season three-point records. I remember making a "Peter O'Meter" when I was a kid, which was a big thermometer and every time he scored we would slide a red piece of paper higher and higher. Yeah... we thought we were pretty cool.

We had quite the backcourt with McKelvey and Spoelstra. Was Ray Ross around the same time period or shortly after?

Yeah, I think Ray Ross was there at that time too. Brenton Moore was the big guy in the middle, and who could forget my man Grant "Wild Thing" Tracy? He was an early 90's guy for sure. David Roth... he was pretty good too.

I still have a soft spot in my heart for the line-up right after them, with Rick Brainard, Matt Houle, and Curt Ranta. That was power, right there!

No one, and I mean NO ONE, could foul out of a game as quickly as my man Kyle Stonehouse.

I still tear up a little bit thinking back to the 1996 WCC Tourney at Toso Pavilion... what a blast that was. Beating GU in the championship game, after they had beat us in the championship the year before... and going absolutely bezerk on the floor after the game... all 30 or so of us. I still have a piece of the net from that game.

Pepperdine deja vu: Was '96 the year that the oblitorated Pepperdine team (I think they were down to 6 or 7 players, and their head coach had quit), were the #8 seed, and knocked off #1 and host Santa Clara? Actually, I think that was 1995... Hmmm, that Pepperdine bench situation sounds familiar...

Curt Ranta: What can be said. That guy was hilarious, and I was lucky enough to live in the same wing as him and the big Australian guy who's name is escaping me at the moment...

Grant Tracy: No man could throw up an air ball like he could. That man had the grace of a newborn giraffe!

Speaking of Curt Ranta, did anyone ever see his appearance on Blind Date? Probably one of my favorite memories ever, especially since it was my dad of all people who shouted at me to turn the channel because "I think that Curt Ranta is on some dating show".

It was HILARIOUS.

And Jay Strid... he was like 7'3" or so and never played, and they had to specially make a huge bed for him that I *think* is still in storage somewhere.

Darn it... I just remembered something I've been meaning to post for a while now. And since this has somehow become a UP history thread, I figure I'll just throw it up here. There is a lot of speculation out of Miami that Pat Riley will step down after this season (or maybe even during this season if it continues to go as badly as it has been) and name Erik Spoelstra as his replacement:

Riley has spoken of selecting his successor from his staff, with Erik Spoelstra, 37, considered the front-runner among the current assistants.

Lots of reports about that on ESPN and from Miami papers. Spoelstra has been a coach at Miami with Riley for about 13 years now (hard to believe)... but he's still a young guy - he's got to be only 36 or 37 I would think. Would be pretty cool to have a former Pilot as an NBA coach!

Spoelstra was on the "Short List" when we hired Holton, wasn't he? (Or was it during the Rev hiring that his name kept popping up?)

Best of luck to him if/when Riley steps down!
