Pilots Win!

Led by Aussie freshman Haylee Andrews and senior Darian Slaga, each scoring 19 points, the Pilots started fast and held on to beat Utah Valley (2-1) in Orem, 65-60 in their first game of the season.

UP next takes on Weber St. in Ogden at 4pm on Monday.  Weber St. won their opening game of the season on Friday over La Verne, 105-43. Rolling Eyes

Pilots Win...again!

Julie Spencer had a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds and freshman Haylee Andrews drops 23 as the Pilots run away from a tight game in the fourth quarter, winning 89-73.  Last season WSU trounced the Pilots in Portland, 91-70, and it might have helped that UP Assistant Coach Skyler Young was an assistant at MSU the past two seasons.

Plenty of beautiful empty purple seats in Ogden on the video feed, all that color must have made the Pilots feel right at home.  Razz

The Pilots will be heading to Honolulu for their next two games, Hawaii on Friday and Arizona on Sunday.

The Pilots beat Hawaii (0-4) in front of over 1200 fans in Honolulu today, 72-65, but it was a lot tighter than the score would indicate, and the Pilots almost let it get away by turning the ball over on a number of occasions down the stretch while trying to break through Hawaii's full court pressure.

Freshman Haylee Andrews again acted as the experienced floor leader as she and senior Darian Slaga each scored 17 points, although together they could have put the game out of reach earlier by sinking their free-throws....they were a combined 9-16.

Much tougher test on Sunday against Arizona, but a 3-0 start, all against D1 opponents on the road, is always nice.  The Pilots first home game of the season is against Cal St. Fullerton next Saturday at noon as part of a triple-header that includes men's games, USC-Upstate vs. Cal Poly at 2:30 and Texas St. vs. UP at 5:00

Don't know yet how many shots the Pilots put up today, but their orders were the "shoot a lot....just let it fly!"

I was told the goal was to put up 70 shots, although they did pull it back a little as the clock was winding down in their 83-74 win over Cal State Fullerton in the Pilots home opener.

EDIT: The Pilots put up 82 shots and scored 83 points on 40.2% shooting.

Seniors Julie Spencer and Darian Slaga led the team with a combined 50 points and 18 rebounds.

Next game is against Utah State in Portland on Wednesday @ 7pm.

Pilots outscore Utah St. 27-14 in the 4th quarter on their way to a 61-54 win.

Unfortunately, two starters, guard Josie Matz and point guard Haylee Andrews go down with ankle injuries, but Josie is able to return and limp around while scoring 15 of her 19 points in the 4th quarter to complete the comeback after trailing by 8 at the beginning of the quarter.

The Pilots are now 5-1 (their best start in 17 years) and next play at PSU on Saturday at 2pm.

The Vikings (4-0) are ranked eighth in the nation among mid-majors by espnW while giving up only 48.2 points per game this season. The Vikings have also beaten their opponents by an average of 30.5 points per game, ranking them first in the Big Sky and 11th in the nation for scoring margin.

Vikings win, 92-79 in the Viking Pavilion'

Both teams played evenly, but PSU's vaunted defense forced 18 UP turnovers resulting in 30 points, while UP forced 15 turnovers for just 13 points...and that was the difference.

Portland defeats Air Force 79-60, improving 8-3.

That's already more total wins than any of the past four full seasons (7, 6, 3, 4) and probably the best non-conference start in a very long time.

UP opened conference play with two road games, losing at PU 82-68, and  losing tonight at LMU 76-58.

I am often confused by the athletic dept. tweets.  For example:
@PortlandPilots wrote:WBB: Final from L.A. Spencer's 19 point, 11 rebound double-double not enough as LMU edges out the Pilots in the final game of 2018.
Not sure how an 18 point loss where they were outscored every quarter is characterized as being edged out.

The Pilots are now 0-4 after home losses to UOP and SMC this past week, however they were a lot more entertaining to watch than the men's team in their loss to LMU.

Against UOP, Portland senior Darian Slaga scored her 1,000th career point, the 25th player in UP program history to hit 1,000 points, and the Pilots nearly came all the way back from a second-half deficit with an epic 21-6 run to get within 6, but UOP held on, 76-66.

The 98-91 loss to SMC was even more exciting as UP had three players score at least 20 points and the game remained close until the end.

Julie Spencer scored 23 points to lead the Pilots, Darian Slaga added 21 points, Maddie Muhlheim provided 20 points off the bench, and freshman point guard Haylee Andrews dropped 14.

Just like the men’s team, the women may not win any WCC games this season, but unlike the men to this point, they are a lot more entertaining…

Pilots Win! Pilots Win!

In a very rare Thursday afternoon game in San Diego, the Pilots prevailed, 69-60, for their first WCC win of the season (1-5), and move their record for the year to 9-8.the

UP got off to a fast start, outscoring the Toreros 47-31 in the first half and then holding on in an unusually low scoring second half.

Not sure if the USD squad was thrown off by the early start, but UP was up 16-4 just three minutes into the game.

Displaying free-throw shooting that would turn the men's team around, the Pilots were 17-19 from the line (the team ranks 14th in the nation in FTs), and forced 26 USD turnovers.

I'm told the noon start was because it was USD's annual day for San Diego area high school students to visit the campus as part of a field trip to learn about several aspects of the school.

The women jumped to an early lead at BYU, and lead much of the way. After leading 68-60, they were outscored 19-3 as BYU closed out the game to win.

If you weren't at the Chiles Center this afternoon, you missed quite a shooting performance and a program record.

Sophomore Maddie Mulheim, from Sunset HS, dropped six three-pointers in the 3rd quarter alone and went on to register 9 treys for the game as UP took care of business over USD, 96-74.

All of Mulheim's 27 points were from her 9-13 from beyond the arc shooting.... a new school record. pirat

The Pilots are now 11-14/3-11.

In the last year of her 5-year contract, Head Coach Cheryl Sorenson’s team went 5-13 in WCC play (including a 22 point win over #3 PU this past Saturday) and was 13-16 overall this season, the team’s best record during Sorenson’s tenure.

With an 8th place overall finish, the Pilots will face #9 USF on Thursday at noon in Las Vegas with the prospect of playing #5 LMU at noon on Friday. UP has already beaten USF twice this season and lost both encounters with LMU. A win on Thursday would be the first win in Las Vegas for the Pilots since beating SCU in 2013.

Playing a “let-it-fly” style, the team was usually fun to watch this season, and although the team will lose three outstanding graduating seniors, two of whom scored over 1,000 points in their four years on the Bluff, the Pilots bring in three very good recruits this summer, including a 6-foot guard from Australia.

Many fans, who were “fed-up” with UP women’s basketball over the past few seasons and were calling for a coaching change as soon as Sorenson’s contract was up, were much less vociferous about the need for change as this season progressed and the team’s style and winning record improved.

What Coach Sorenson does best is develop young women into mature adults who are a credit to the university. Sure, college sports is a business, but when one considers the goodwill Sorenson, her assistants, and her players bring to UP from Portland area parents and their children, a change might not be in the best interest of the “Big Picture.”

Yeah...losing to the #9 seed is not good!

Sure, UP was without two starters due to injury, but USF was without their best player.

It's obviously going to be a long few days and sleepless nights as the staff awaits their fate going forward...wouldn't be surprised if a "nation wide search" gets underway soon.

Personally, I like to see Coach Sorenson continue at UP, but if she doesn't, there's an assistant at TCU I really like.

The last search was “bench wide”

Our vp for athletics, when questioned about the men’s situation, said”not everything is the coach’s fault.”

Considering the women’s side hasn’t been fully funded, I’d like to hear the explanation there.

Calling a search for a new coach "national" suggests a respectability of the administrations efforts that may be unwarranted for the underfunded and second tier women's program. The women's team this year was more competitive than the men. There is a positive direction of the women's program. I am not sure, given our recent results following the last 'national search' for a new basketball coach, that I am at all convinced that a new hire, with limited resources, will improve Pilot fortunes.

Sorenson and staff have earned another year. Let us not change when things are beginning to move in a positive direction.
