Couldnt be any worse than the gym at MSU in Bozeman. There were still flies left over from the previous event.

Interesting, the bookies in Vegas are opening with UNLV by 6 at home vs. UP.  IMO that's not much of a spread with KB out of the lineup....and believe me, the book makers know such things.

It's always nice to get off the Strip and go to the old Downtown Las Vegas.....classy: Shocked

UNLV hasn't been that strong at home this year, from what I can see in the box scores. I like our chances. Has anyone heard any more on Bailey?

During the Coach's show on Monday night, Rev confirmed that Bailey would not play tonight, and listed his status as "day-to-day".  (It was mentioned as "week-to-week" previously... but that might just be semantics).

Priorities.

Considering his importance, it would be silly to risk his healing  until conference.

If I were the coach, I'd give him one game before Gonzaga, even if he were totally cleared to play.

2 point loss in OT. Critical TO on an inbounds play at end of regulation. Shocker.

Brutal game to lose... inbounds play. Hats off to Doolin for taking UNLV on his shoulders, and to the Pilots for not folding in OT when UNLV started making shots.

Great defensive performance for 40 minutes. Ouch.

I'd look at the 37% in the first half as much as an inbounds play, but whatever. Gotta put two halves together and close out teams.

Oh, I agree... There were plenty of plays and missed shots to look at (and many fantastic plays and defensive stops that kept us in it)... and Barker had a fantastic game... but just that one inbounds play... if we get that ball in, our odds of winning were pretty darn good.

I thought the men played very well. It was great to see Riley have a solid game and Alec was fantastic.

I remember watching David Stockton always inbound the ball for GU and questioning why the shortest player on the court was taking the ball inbounds from the baseline. Maybe Few had a method to his madness.

UNLV Stuns Pilots in Overtime Heartbreaker

On the Web:  http://www.portlandpilots.com/news/2014/12/18/MBB_1218141605.aspx

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – UNLV guard Cody Doolin made a layup with 0.4 seconds left in overtime to give the Runnin’ Rebels a 75-73 come-from-behind win over the Portland Pilots Wednesday night at the Thomas and Mack Center.

Doolin also made the key play to force overtime with an assist to Dwayne Morgan for a layup as time expired to tie the game.

The Pilots (7-3) led by eight points with less than three minutes remaining, but the Runnin’ Rebels (7-2) closed regulation with an 8-1 run and capitalized on a Portland turnover with 17 seconds left to force overtime.

Playing without leading scorer Kevin Bailey for the third straight game, the Pilots got big contributions from various players. Portland led for a majority of the game and the final 17:22 of regulation before Morgan’s layup.

Senior Riley Barker made his first start of the season as the Pilots went with a big lineup that included Thomas van der Mars and Volodymyr Gerun as well. Barker finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

Sophomore point guard Alec Wintering led the team with 24 points and five assists, including numerous clutch baskets in the second half and overtime. His back-to-back layups in the final minute of overtime each tied the game.

Gerun added 11 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. He also came up big in overtime with a put-back and three straight free throws to tie the game with 10 seconds left, setting up Doolin’s layup.

Portland executed its game plan to perfection, dominating the boards with a 38-30 rebounding margin, including a 16-8 edge in offensive rebounds that led to a 21-12 difference in second chance points.

Offensively the Pilots were able to consistently get good looks, but struggled to knock down shots consistently.

Portland shot 44 percent from the field, 4-of-14 from three-point range, and 11-of-13 at the free throw line. UNLV finished at 49 percent overall, 4-for-18 from beyond the arc, and 13-of-15 at the foul line.

UNLV improves to 4-0 all-time against the Pilots, while Portland falls to 1-2 in overtime games this season. The Pilots opened the year with an overtime win at San Jose State and then lost in extra time to Oregon State at home on Dec. 6.

Portland will return home for its final two non-conference games beginning on Saturday at 7 p.m. versus Montana State. The Pilots then host Lewis & Clark on a Monday matinee with a 2 p.m. start time. The Pilots will open West Coast Conference play on the road at San Diego on Saturday, Dec. 27 and then travel to BYU on Monday, Dec. 29.

At least we're consistent. Four straight games in which we've given the opponent a chance to win after taking a solid lead. PSU and Sacramento couldn't capitalize. OSU and UNLV did. Even though there were a lot of bright spots, I'm done with moral victories and celebrations of good efforts. This seems to be the plateau of the UP men's basketball program: playing competitive games against higher-level opponents.

Over the past four seasons, how many game have we lost, or have at least needlessly gone to OT, as a result of inability to execute inbounds plays? Tonight and last year at home against BYU stick out in my memory as the most egregious examples.

In Dave Rice's post-game press conference (http://www.unlvrebels.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/121714aaa.html), he said that they made a conscious decision to NOT double-team in the post, in order to play tougher defense on the Pilots' 3-point shooters. Seems to have worked out well, as VDM was pretty ineffectual even without facing a double-team (4-11 shooting) and the 3-point shooting was terrible (4-14).
