Las Vegas has the Pilots by 6 and KenPom favors the Pilots by 3.....time to get nervous.

If memory serves me (not a given, I'm afraid), the Pilots seem to respond better when considered the underdog.  We've seen Rev's guys barely show up  at times when favored as much as they are today....hopefully that trend will STOP today.

Road games are never easy, and with Rashad Muhammad and the rest of the Spartans seemingly able to hit their shots from all over, including beyond the 3-point arc, it could be a long afternoon if the defenders are not in their grills.

I was going to attend this game before finding out it was to be live-streamed....looking forward to a good game.  Make us proud guys!

I'm glad San Jose State moves well inside the three-point line for their timeouts. Must be real hard for them to hear the coach over the defeaning roar of the tens of fans at this game.

Well...... looking on the bright side after watching that first half, there's plenty of room for improvement!

Gotta finish better than that if we want to get the win, and I definitely get the sense that we should be owning the paint more than we are - would be great to see Thomas step up and take over for a stretch in the second half.

Bobby had a rough half... zero points and three fouls. Hope he gets on track soon.

11 points is a big hill to climb, but I think we can do it. Hopefully. Smile

I agree... unfortunately this is a very similar theme to last season--finishing at the rim and getting the bigs involved. We need to figure this out, and soon!

Well, not the bigs, but Bailey and Wintering take over in the 2nd half and get it to overtime, and the Pilots take it by 5, 73-68!

Hope you enjoyed the golf, DD. Razz

Pilots win, 73-68 in OT!

A good comeback on the road...  but we are going to need to play more than 10 minutes of good ball if we are going to win.

In the mean time, it was awesome to see Pressley, Bailey and Wintering take over in the closing minutes to ice the win.  It wasn't pretty, but we will take it and have plenty to build off of!

GO PILOTS!

Had no illusions that this was going to be an easy game on the road and SJ State looks like a much improved team.

Wasn't pretty at times but they figured it out in the end. Turnaround for this game was when they stopped throwing the ball away on those damn skip passes!

A win is a win is a win. Non-conference road wins are never easy to come by... our last non-Portland State win in a non-conf opponents gym came in 2010.

Bailey made big plays down the stretch, but gotta give props to Voldy too - he knocked down a HUGE jumper with 20 seconds to go in regulation to tie it up.

Alec was rock solid, Bryce played great D... lots of stuff we can improve on, but for now I'm going to relish in the fact that we gutted this one out. Here's hoping we respond like this when we're in trouble and things aren't going well many more times this season.

It wasn't pretty, but it checked 3 important boxes:

1) Road win
2) Comeback win
3) Overtime win

What a game. Glad to see us pull out a win in a close game. We lost almost every close game last year.

That being said, My emotional reaction down the stretch in this game was too similar to how I felt two seasons ago: I had an overwhelming expectation that we would commit a turnover whenever we had the ball. The offense is on very shaky ground at this point. Great individual performances bail(ey)ed us out today. But as a unit, we look like a turnover waiting to happen on most possessions.

This is going to be a long season if neither VDM or Sharp can make any contributions, as was the case today. I'm pleasantly surprised that we were able to pull this one out, nonetheless.

Anyone have theories on what happens to our outside sharpshooters between their junior and senior seasons? Bobby Sharp has nothing to show for two games. Reminiscent of Nemanja Mitrovic. Shocked

Wintering, Bailey Lead Pilots to Thrilling Road Comeback at San Jose State

On the Web: www.portlandpilots.com/news/2014/11/16/MBB_1116142208.aspx

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Alec Wintering and Kevin Bailey combined for 46 points as the Portland Pilots overcame a 13-point deficit midway through the second half and defeated the San Jose State Spartans, 73-68, in overtime on Sunday afternoon at The Event Center.

Senior forward Volodymyr Gerun also stepped up with his first career double-double and hit the game-tying jumper with 23 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Wintering, a sophomore point guard, finished with career highs of 24 points and six steals for the Pilots (2-0). He was 7-of-11 from the field, 4-of-4 from three-point range, and 6-of-6 from the free throw line.

Bailey Scored 22 points for the second straight game and was the key scorer during Portland’s comeback. The senior from Clovis, Calif. tallied 15 points during a 18-5 comeback that saw the Pilots erase a 50-37 deficit with 10:41 left in the game. His long three-pointer tied it at 55-55 with 3:15 remaining.

Wintering then gave the Pilots their first lead since early in the game with a driving layup to make it 57-55.

SJSU’s Jordan Baker missed two free throws with 54 seconds left, but Frank Rogers got the offensive rebound and converted a three-point play to put the Spartans (1-1) up 62-60. Gerun then hit a baseline jumper with 23 ticks left to tie the game and Wintering stole the ball at the other end of the court just before time expired.

The Spartans took an early four-point lead in overtime, but Wintering and junior guard Bryce Pressley made back-to-back layups to put the Pilots up 67-66. The Pilots made six straight free throws in the final minute – four from Wintering – to secure the win.

Gerun finished with career bests of 13 points and 10 rebound in 41 minutes of action. Bailey added six assists and zero turnovers in his 41 minutes of play. Senior center Riley Barker also provided a boost off the bench with seven rebounds, four steals and big basket towards the end of regulation – his only field goal of the game.

The Spartans held Portland in check throughout the first half and went into the locker room leading 37-26 at the half. Baker led four SJSU players in double figures with 17 points, while Rogers added 16.

Portland made 7-of-14 three pointers and 20-of-27 free throws, while SJSU was just 6-for-20 from beyond the arc and 14-of-24 at the charity stripe. The Pilots shot 37 percent from the field compared to 41 percent for the Spartans.

The Spartans had just 10 assists and committed 17 turnovers, while Portland finished with 18 assists and 11 giveaways.

Portland will now return to the Chiles Center for a Saturday matchup with the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. with pregame radio coverage on Sports 910 (KMTT) at 6:30 p.m. Live video will also be provided on PortlandPilots.com.

Bailey and Wintering . . .need the obvious be stated . . .Reveno suggested that Wintering would play like a veteran and so he did. This level of play is almost expected from Bailey.

No win if either was absent.

I had my ear buds in listening to the game...and I will admit, the descriptions were driving me nuts until Voldy hit his jumper and time expired in regualation.

The obvious stars were Kevin and Alec...but Voldy filled in very well for Rhino today, and continues to show great improvement.

It's easy to criticize Thomas and Riley for lack of offense, but I think the "bigs" were well scouted/remembered from last year, and they were being keyed on.  Thomas was in foul trouble and played sparingly, but together he and Riley had 15 boards, and Riley stepped it up by playing 30 minutes while stealing the ball 4 times and blocking it once....the little things that can result in victory.

Not worried about Bobby yet....he was called upon to play some defense against faster and better athletes and got in foul trouble.  I don't think he shot more than twice today....I'm confident he'll be there when he's most needed.

It will be an interesting week of practice with a lot of soul searching on the part of the players and staff.  Murray State is coming up, but let's just get by Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Saturday before we look too far ahead.

Finally had a look at the box score and a chance to see the names of the San Jose St. players; they REALLY are a different team from last year....but we know a couple of their players.

Jordan Baker, a transfer from Pepperdine, led SJSU with 17 points before fouling out, and Frank Rogers, a transfer from the University of San Francisco, had 16. Both were making their Spartans' debut after sitting out the opener for a team rules violation suspension.

Baker played two seasons for the Waves and was their second-leading scorer in the 2012-13 season when he earned honorable mention All-West Coast Conference honors, and Rogers came to USF with a good JUCO background before getting caught up in the meat grinder run by the USF coach.

Finally, Daryl Gaynor, Jr. is a 3-star freshman who scored 12 today....so yes this is a new team.

The Spartan's biggest threat (at least until now), sophomore Rashad Muhammad, was kept in check by the Pilots and scored only 5 points.

So, after seeing the numbers and the San Jose St. lineup, I feel a bit better about the Pilots' performance today....especially as it was on the road!

After a look at the Pilots' box score...one statistic stood out for me: minutes played!

Wintering: 42; Bailey: 41; Gerun: 41; Barker: 30; Pressley: 42.

Are you kidding me!  Especially Voldy and Riley....those are some long minutes for big men, and are a testement to the physical conditioning the entire team has undergone.
