Parkes Kendrick is a sophomore on the women's soccer team and she has taken on blogging duties for the 2014 season. Parkes will check in from time to time with an update on the team and provide fans with a "behind the scenes" look at the UP women's soccer program. The team and Parkes are currently preparing to host the 2014 Portland Nike Invitational, which will feature Washington, Miami and San Diego State this weekend at Merlo Field.

Hey Pilot Fans,

Welcome to the 2014 Women's Soccer Blog!!! For this first entry, I want to introduce y'all to our freshman class, but not in the usual way. No, this will be in a style that my teammates would probably coin as "classic Parkes" (then they would sigh and roll their eyes). Yes, you guessed it, I am going to explain how and why each of the freshmen has a vegetable that is exactly like them. I call these "spirit vegetables."

Maddie Dieker (Dieks): Maddie is a classic bean sprout. She is one of the most positive people I've ever met, and she just exudes a bean sprout aura. Let me explain. Bean sprouts are a very common ingredient in many dishes; Dieks is always there, laughing at everything, even herself. Likewise, bean sprouts are not flashy or self-centered—they don't try to overpower the flavor of a dish—just like Dieks is so humble. But don't be fooled, on the field Dieks has that snappy, fresh, "wow" style that is so characteristic of a bean sprout.

Taylor Luty (Tay): Taylor gets the honorable role as an artichoke, because an artichoke has a heart at the bottom of the young flower head. Taylor is filled with an enormous amount of passion, love, and caring, which is good because she's a nursing major! Also, an artichoke is a very hearty plant! It is tough and stands its ground, just as Taylor is a force to be reckoned with in goal.

Jess Kennedy: Mushroom, mushroom, mushroom. I cannot stress how much Jess is exactly like a mushroom. Just as there are a zillion types of mushrooms out there, Jess is an absolute character—she has a zillion things to say about a zillion different topics. It's awesome. If I had to pin her down as one type of mushroom, it would be a shiitake, since I've heard that those are very flavorful. But don't forget that there are also numerous types of poisonous mushrooms out there. Let me tell you, you do not want to come across Jess on the field because she is no nice shiitake out there, and that's why I'm thankful that she's on my team.

Maddie Seckman (Seck): Seck is most definitely a radish, because radishes are most commonly eaten raw; well, Seck is RAW on the field. As a small, vertically challenged (ok, short) person, I am totally in awe of the strength and power that she brings to the midfield. She wins every ball that comes her way and she has a beautiful touch. Finally, just as a radish is usually red, white, or pink, Seck has the energy and passion that these colors exude.

Hannah Griffiths Boston: Hannah, my fellow Grant High School alum, is a turnip simply because the word "turnip" makes me laugh for some reason. Like Hannah's sense of humor, I can't quite figure out what it is about the word "turnip" that is so funny—I just know that it is consistently hilarious. However, I think it is best encapsulated by my favorite Hannah-ism: "If you can't get them to laugh with you, get them to laugh at you. That's something people say, right?" No, Hannah, I don't think it is. But in all seriousness, Hannah, like a turnip, is very versatile. I feel comfortable with her playing any position, and playing it well.

Kaycie Young (Kayce): Kaycie = Lettuce, since lettuce, when added to all of these vegetables, makes a wonderful salad. Without the lettuce, they are just vegetables. Whether or not anyone else realizes this, I know that Kaycie is secretly the mastermind of the rest of the freshman class. She's quiet and has a dry sense of humor; these are both trademark signs that she totally has them wrapped around her little finger. But she also shows her "lettucey" side on the field, where, as a holding central midfielder, she controls the pace of the game and connects the defense with the offense.

I guess I'm a Russet Potato from Idaho. (I think a potato qualifies as a vegetable.)

A tomato is a fruit,  technically.

Actually, from The original list, only Radishes and Turnips would qualify, under the subcategory root vegetables.

The rest are leafy parts or fruiting bodies. In the case of an artichoke, it's a fruit bud of a variety of thistle.

Somewhere I read it has the dubious distinction of being called either? I was going to get cute with saying, "like a tomato hanging around waiting to get picked with the option of being fruity", but I didn't want to give anyone any wrong ideas.

We already had the wrong ideas all on our own.

I gather no one has figured out why I selected Russet Potato from Idaho.

You guys are very slow. Either that or new to PilotNation.

And why not? Last week was the plant kingdom, this week the Animal kingdom is featured.


She had better pace herself. Only Monera, Protists, and fungi are left, though I submit she touched on the latter already.


The Math section opens up all sorts of possibilities. If you have read my posts over the years, we are kindred spirits.

She is one of those 9.5 miles players.

I hope the Parkes becomes the default unit of measure on campus if not throughout the whole state and beyond. As in how tall are you? (I personally am 1.126 Parkes tall) Or how far is it to dead center field from home plate at Etzel Field - 74.29 Parkes.

You can use the Parkes as a unit of time, also.

Light travels one  Parkes in just about 5 1/3 nanoseconds

I went to the Women's Soccer page to see if there is a new blog from Parkes. I clicked on Additional Links ad then when I clicked on the Soccer Blog link, I got last year's blog from Lorielle. I went out and tried it again with the same result. Then I clicked on the Questions/Feedback link thinking I could report the problem to the webmaster. Of course that link didn't work at all. Anyone else having these issues or is it just me?
