Based on the Live Stats it looks like the Pilots had a wide variety of players at forward tonight at OSU. It will be interesting to hear from some of the folks who were actually at the game.

Yes, UP tried a variety of people at forward positions. Kennedy and Dieker, were added to the mix as well as the usual suspects. At one point I think everyone was a fresh or Soph. oSU is pretty young, too.

OSU sat back a lot and tried to counter over the top, which was handled pretty well, but once again Luty had to make a couple 1v1 saves.
The other two SOG from OSU were from a looking way that Luty handled well. She had a good game.

The first half shots seemed a bit far away from goal except for a couple. The second half saw some more dangerous chances.

Lots of possession, some good passing to free folks up, a couple nice tries on corners, but just couldn't get it past the keeper.

Up had two players taken down in the box. One with a minute left, and one in OT.

The first was Dieker on a break and got taken down with a slide tackle. I'd like to see the video, because it sure looked like the defender went through the player to get ball, but the ref swallowed the noise maker.

Im sure the players are kicking themselves on the chances they missed.

As a general rule we try not to be negative about individual players on this site. I've found it hard to write about games this season with this constraint. Yesterday the Pilots were playing Oregon State who went into the game 0-6-2 and tied 0-0 after 120 minutes. Something is very wrong with this story.

The experiment of playing Kurle at forward has failed. It's time to stop. She is a good holding midfielder. Play her there. Now.

Last night there was a clear difference in the level of movement and the pace of the offense with Kennedy and LaPrevotte up with Evans. Evans is struggling too. She's a goal scorer. And she spends too much time out of the penalty area when Pilots have possession. I know that she's gotten drawn deep looking for the ball but once she's touched it she needs to play an earlier pass and then get in the box where she's dangerous. And she needs to trust her teammates and pass the ball more often.
Kendrick has been wide open on the right so many times this season. Give her the ball and hit the box, the balls will come and then the goals will follow.

Moving Kurle back would actually also help towards another problem. Center midfield. I expect the center mids to touch the ball a lot. To be looking for the ball. To want the ball. To link the play for the team. Connect defense with offense. Change the direction. Spread it wide. Launch the forwards. Young and Wetherington are playing all game in those positions. Young is young. And has done OK but she's not in the game enough and not showing for the ball. Several times last night one or two Portland players were isolated in possession - usually the outside defender and midfielder - and neither Young nor Wetherington came looking for the ball. Wetherington is supposed to be a rising star. Preseason all WCC. In the final 10 minutes of OT she didn't touch the ball until the final seconds of the period.

There were some bright spots. DeYoung had the best game I've seen from her at the back. Kennedy brings energy and pace. Kendrick runs for ever and plays classic Pilot soccer - control the ball, make a pass, move into space. Luty is doing well and improving her kicking. Sippel is always 100% committed. I'd love to see Wetherington with that level of passion.

This looks like a team that is very low on confidence, which is not surprising after recent results, and they looked scared of making mistakes. Big challenge for Garrett with conference play coming up.

The play was better in the loss last weekend.
This might have been the first game this year where players were not moving to the ball.

I'd like to see the team work the ball to the corners more, instead of attacking up the middle.
Put more pressure on the ball.
Look for the rebound.

I think the problem of not moving to the ball was worse last night. Which is worrying sign of a team losing confidence and will.

I think it's been a problem in central midfield for much longer. In my "neighborhood" at Merlo we've noticed it for several games. Maybe Garrett has defined a different role for those players. I'd be surprised.

I agree with your point about looking for width. They need to move the ball faster. The pace of the game is too slow. Last night the grass was long and hampered quick movement. But it's been a problem for more than the one game.

There are areas that need improvement, no doubt about it. However this is a young team and it takes time to jell. The coaching staff is having to get 19 players, one third of whom are freshmen, all on the same page. This is not an overnight process. Everyone in an English class doesn't read and comprehend at the same speed, however over time with the right teacher, they all finish the book and understand what it told them. It is the same here. The players learn and implement what they learn at different speeds. The coaching staff has proven itself in the past, these players have talent, they will succeed. Obviously not as fast that we as fans might like, but we need to remember that these are young women experiencing a lot of new things in their lives right now, on and off the field. I don't see a lack of confidence and will out there. I see a young team with a lot of talent working hard to understand the college game, their teammates and the Pilot way of playing soccer.

I agree with this. Knowing the players who had graduated last year and how young this team is, we're right about where I thought we would be. The pre-season national rankings, as usual, were crazy. Given our very tough non-conference schedule, we actually could be worse off. The OSU game, obviously, was a bummer as we really needed a win. But realistically, we've done about as well as reasonably could have been hoped for overall so far this year.

I am not saying anything less.
As I have said before, I love this freshman class.
I expect great things from them.

Just pointing out some lows.

I was hoping for a win at OSU, and it could have been if they had played as well as they did the previous weekend.

The one high point is they took a lot of shots.

Our conference schedule is going to be rough also.
3 WCC teams are ranked ahead of UP. (Bennett Rankings)

Sounds like another well played game with disappointing results.
Was anyone there?

Here's an interesting trivia fact. As of September 26, the Pilot Volleyball team has more wins than the men's and women's soccer teams combined. Bet that's the first time in a long time that you could say that about the victory totals of those respective teams--one month into the fall athletic season.

Seattle streamed the game with background noise but no commentary. I'd say the article did not correctly describe the first half, in which Seattle had a lot of control of the game. Seattle played a very high pressure game and were on the ball constantly.

In the second half, the Pilots did much better. I think Seattle overdid it in the first half and looked much more sluggish in the second.

The game could have gone either way.

Nevertheless, I thought this was an important performance for the Pilots, getting them over some kind of hump. We'll get a better idea tomorrow v UW.

GO PILOTS!
