I haven’t seen Waldow play but twice this year, so my sample is limited. On what I have seen, however, I am not sure he deserves the nod for all conference over our own VDM. Waldow did have a better game in Portland than in Moraga, but . . .

If the team is winning accolades are universally easier to obtain, apparently.

Does no one think VDM deserving of all conference as opposed to honorable mention?

I am hoping that these selections are seen as more missed opportunities that are inspiration for next year.

Wintering's injury had to hurt his chances, due to no other coaches seeing him play the past few games (the recency effect).

I would agree with wrv that VDM may have in fact been more deserving, but I also did not see him play in most of their games.

VDM > Waldow i agree but what about Rhino getting snubbed? I think he easily could have been selected over Davis from Pepperdine.

Kevin Bailey (#6) and Duda Sanadze (#18) are the only two players in the top-20 in scoring who were not included in the all-league honors. I'm not sure how anyone can justify Holmes, Pinkins and Gill being included when KB is left out.

Kevin missed too many games.

They pretty much went on stats, it looks like. I found this commentary from WestCoastConvo interesting.
WestCoastConvo wrote:Evan Payne: Payne is a high volume shooter who can get hot in a hurry or can kill the Lions’ chances to win a game with poor shot selection. He also has a problematic ratio of 45 assists to 81 turnovers this season. If he lets Ireland do a bulk of the ball-handling and looks to complement Ireland on the wing, the Lions have a chance to be successful.

So that is your all-freshman player, ilo of a player who is near the top in assist:turnover ratio as a true freshman.

UP75 - sorry to invade your board but I thought your post deserved a non-Pilot perspective.

Winterling had a great year and really gave you guys a solid point guard to run your offense. He played great for a freshman and really helped VDM and Nicholas do their thing. You're pretty solid at PG for the next couple of years.

I can say virtually the same thing for Jeremy Major at Pepperdine. I think the two guys were in a virtual tie for freshman PG. Maybe Major deserves the nod because he played more league games. I don't know. It's a tough call.

I suppose I'm biased but i think Payne gets the nod over one of them. It's tough to compare because they play different positions. Alex should have more assists. That wasn't Payne's job. I'll be the first to admit that Payne had some gut-churning TOs. Too many. But he is a very dynamic player who made a lot happen. He carried the Lions in a number of games and had a significant impact in most. He was near the top of scorers in the WCC - which was his job as shooting guard. A few less TOs and he should have been a candidate for all-WCC.

If I were voting for all freshman team, I have to select Payne first. I would then select Wintering or Major. I'd probably give a very slight edge to Wintering but I also think Major is a good choice and he did play more games.

Regarding all WCC, you guys did get unfairly ignored. VDM and Bailey deserved all conference and probably so did Nicholas. Of course, this does beg the question of why Portland didn't finish higher than 7th with 3 all conference players and a real good point guard. I dont know because I saw less than half your games but I wonder if these really good players simply weren't consistent enough. Whenever I saw them play they looked really good. Better than what I saw Waldow, Karnowski and Davis do. However when I look at the statistics, VDM and Nicholas' numbers come up a bit lower. I can't explain why Bailey got snubbed. He still played in most games and was your high scorer

One more thought. It has always distressed me that it seems like the end-of-season all conference team usually mirrors the pre-season team without a lot of regard for what actually happens during the year. I find the same thing tends to happen with the all tournament team each year. Of course, my theory doesn't explain this years Bailey snub. Maybe he got the wrong people mad??

Good luck tomorrow. Without two of your top players we have a chance but you're still the favorite.

LIW, you saw more of the Pilots than I saw of the Lions. Payne had a good year, and so did Major. And they did not miss any games. That may be what it came down to. Thanks for your feedback.
