Steve Alford to UCLA Empty Steve Alford to UCLA

Post by DoubleDipper Sat Mar 30, 2013 9:54 am

Hmm, I didn’t see this coming……Ten days ago Steve Alford signed a 10-year deal with New Mexico, supposedly keeping him with the Lobos through 2023 with a $240,000 raise to bring his salary to approximately $1 million per year.

But now Alford has signed a seven-year deal with UCLA worth about $2.6 million per year, according ESPN's Andy Katz this morning. UCLA is expected to pay Alford's buyout at UNM.

Alford's a very good coach and is fan and media savvy.....

It can only be an upgrade to the Pac-12 as whole, IMO.

So, UCLA hired a dyed-in-the-wool Hoosier as its next basketball coach....Yea, right, as if that would ever work!

Oh, wait.... tongue

Craig Neal should keep their program going. I wonder if Alford's son will transfer?

It will certainly help UNM and CSU that UNLV’s freshman forward, and “man-child,” Anthony Bennett has said he will declare for the NBA draft…... Razz

Probably saw the way Rice was wasting talent all over the place, plus the tourney loss, and decided to bail.

It’s an interesting question. If all the scholarships are taken he could just walk-on at UCLA and play for three years….I think his dad has enough $$ to pay his way. I’m told the children of UCLA staff do NOT get free tuition at the state school….

You might remember UP badly wanted to sign SG Cullen Neal last year and offered him a scholarship, but he signed with St. Mary’s instead. At the time he accepted the ride to SMC his dad was New Mexico's associate head coach. Now his dad, Craig Neal, is the new head coach at UNM after Steve Alford went to UCLA.

Will Cullen now stay at home? Hmmm, if it was ME, yes. MWC and UNM vs. the uncertainty at SMC….I guess it depends on his relationship with his dad....

I don't remember the circumstances anymore...I just recall that son Mike led Arizona to a NCAA Championship his freshman year, while dad Henry was in his first year as head coach at USC.....or something like that.

I did hear Mike's name mentioned by some pundit during this year's tournament by saying he was a UCLA grad. No, that would be dad.....

Apparently “both” of Steve Alford’s sons are going to UCLA….that’s twice as many as many sons as I knew about.

UNM has three open scholarships……asked if his son Cullen might come to UNM instead of St. Mary’s, Coach Neal said, “If his mom is any good at recruiting, we have a chance.”

Only in the rumor stage, but it's likely there'll be another defection at UNLV when Mike Moser transfers to UW after graduating from UNLV this summer. If that's the case, he'll be able to play this coming season.

Hmm, now there is room for a shooting guard at New Mexico as 6-7 senior-to-be Tony Snell has decided to declare for the NBA draft.

So, the question is, if Cullen Neal were to jump the Gaels floundering boat and opt to play for his dad at UNM, would he have to sit a year because he signed early with SMC? scratch

It's possible he could play right away if SMC gives him a release.

From national-letter.org :

PENALTY PROVISIONS & APPEALS PROCESS
NLI Provision 4 states a student who does not attend the signing institution for at least one academic year (two semesters or three quarters) must serve one academic year in residence and will lose one season of competition in all sports upon enrollment at any other NLI member institution.

NLI Provision 6 indicates a student may be completely released from his or her NLI obligation, including the one-year Basic Penalty, with approval from the original signing institution. The institution must indicate its decision of “Complete Release” on the NLI Release Request Form. The NLI Policy and Review Committee or the Division II Review Committee will consider appeals for relief from the NLI Basic Penalty when the signing institution denies a student’s request for a “Complete Release.” The Committee will evaluate the extenuating circumstances presented by a petitioning student prior to rendering its decision.

No real surprise here, but Cullen Neal, who was slated to replace Matthew Dellavedova as Saint Mary's point guard will instead play for his father at New Mexico.

Neal is a flashy guard with size who averaged 26.5 points per game this past season and could make an immediate impact at UNM as he has been granted his release by St. Mary’s.

Classy move on SMC’s part, but they really didn’t have much of a choice under the circumstances....just saying!

So now Randy Bennett has to replace his top recruit, but can't leave campus to do so. Tough times in Moraga upcoming.
