UOP and the NCAA are investigating academic fraud in the athletics department and alleged improper relations between former UOP assistant Joe Ford and a former female athlete.

One can only hope that no student-athletes have or will be negatively affected by this investigation that could lead to sanctions.....

I can see Ford taking the job at Idaho to get a way from the first allegations, but to then resign from Idaho so soon after the NCAA investigation started is rather telling, IMO.

The situation is getting uglier in Stockton.  Head Coach Verlin and an assistant coach have been suspended.

Pacific will not compete in the postseason this season, including the West Coast Conference Tournament, and will reduce the number of basketball scholarships by a total of six over three years. Recruiting also will be limited.

Just like UP, UOP is/was expected to make some player moves this off-season, but it is surprising who the first two to leave are: Juniors Ray Bowles and Jacob Lampkin.

As I recall, shooting guard Bowles, from nearby Modesto, has already used a redshirt year so will probably graduate this year and be a grad transfer for his final year somewhere at a higher level than UOP.

But one-time highly regarded UP recruit, Lampkin, a 6-9/240 power forward, is a different story.  He was a solid part of UOP's front line until an ankle injury sidelined him for the latter part of the season, but with only one year left to play and a redshirt year in front of him if he were to stay in D1, one has to wonder if he was just so dissatisfied with the team mood in Stockton he decided to look for joy of the game elsewhere.

It was always a surprise to me that Lampkin and small forward Kaleb Warner, both UP recruits, left the PNW for Stockton.  Warner transfered to a JUCO after his freshman year and now plays at D2 Rockhurst of the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The shocking thing is that USF has no transfers, so far. When's the last time that happened?

Not sure the year, but Bill Russell might have been there.

Bill Russell played at USF 1953-1956. He never transferred. I was thinking more about the Rex Walters tenure.

Good move, seniors Jacob Lampkin and D.J. Ursery are both transferring to D2 Alaska-Anchorage where they should have a lot more fun playing basketball.

I think that is now 5 non-seniors who have left the team this spring, but just like at UP, these changes were not unexpected.

I think they now have at least two, PF Chance Anderson and SG Marquill Smith.

The downside of having a D1 transfer join your team and sit during the mandatory redshirt year is they can graduate with a year of eligibility remaining and become a "grad transfer."

That's what's happened at Pacific....two starters are leaving, second leading scorer, Miles Reynolds, a transfer from St. Louis, and second leading rebounder, Jack Williams, a transfer from Long Beach St.

Both averaged 31 minutes per game, and their experience will be missed.

Also transferring, and also immediately eligible, is freshman SG Otto Taylor who only played the first part of the season due to injury.

On the UOP board there was mention that Reynolds might look at professional opportunities rather than grad transfer. There is apparently also an academics issue with Kendall Small.

DoubleDipper wrote:Just like UP, UOP is/was expected to make some player moves this off-season, but it is surprising who the first two to leave are: Juniors Ray Bowles and Jacob Lampkin.

Following up: Bowles ended up at Fresno St, where he had a decent season averaging 31 mpg and 10 ppg.  Lampkin ended up at D-II Alaska-Anchorage, where he was getting 15 ppg until an injury ended his season after 10 games.

Not really surprising that senior-to-be Max Tinsley is transferring.  One of only three non-transfers on the Tigers team, Tinsley saw very little action this past season, and will probably drop to a D2 school.

I believe Tinsley's announced departure makes him the 17th player to leave the current UOP roster in the last three years for one reason or another.

SG Miles Reynolds is headed to Oklahoma after two years at St. Louis and two at UOP, including a redshirt year.

Reynolds, immediately eligible as a grad transfer, started every WCC game for the Tigers this past season and was their second leading scorer.

As already reported, Reynolds has gone to Oklahoma, and now Williams, a Southern California native, has decided to go to grad school in Missoula. scratch

Jefferson's 6'7" Khalil Chatman considered a three star by Verbal Commits commits to Pacific to play for Damon Stoudemire, whom he has known his entire life.

It does not appear Pilots offered.

But his father is no doubt pleased.

DD suggested Chatman would commit to Pacific in a April 30 post in the 2018 Recruiting thread, and since then I've talked to one of his teammates who said Chatman "can only commit, not sign until he qualifies."

Apparently Chatman cannot even make an official visit because he never registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center or added his name to the center's institutional request list, and when I asked his teammate if Chatman had received an offer from UP, he just shook his head and said, "grades."

My guess is that despite Chatman being a local Portland guy, he was just not considered a "good fit" by the UP staff.

Chatman must have gotten his prerequisites in order as it has been reported he has now signed with UOP.

Good for him, I look forward to watching him play in the Chiles Center over the next four years...

There've been over 900 players on the transfer portal this summer (close to 200 of which have been grad-transfers), but the one kid who definitely needed a new home was Pacific's Kendall Small.

Coming out of high school in Anaheim he was ranked as the 8th best point guard recruit in a America before he ended up at Oregon and before transferring UOP after his freshman year...with the expectation he would take the WCC by storm, but it just never happened.

In a back-up role last season, his numbers were not impressive, and now he will play his final year of eligibility in Hawaii while going to graduate school at D2 Chaminade where they have five graduate programs...

(It's my recollection that Kendall's little brother, Kyle, was reportedly offered by UP his freshman year (high school class of 2017), but for whatever reason, he never did play college ball).

Nice pick up for UOP today with the announcement that LMU forward Jordan Bell will be moving up the road to Stockton.

Bell, was a starter in 22 games for the Lions this past season, and at 6-8/220 he's a terrific shot-blocker and rebounder while scoring nearly 8 point per game.

A grad-transfer, he can play immediately and has one year of eligibility.
