Defense was much better today. You can dominate a team all game and it can bite you if you don't put them away.

The funny part is that Baarts played a great game, but came out for a ball, called it, and missed. SMC scored in the OT.

Earlier a player got chastised from the sidelines for not heeding the keeper when he called it. I'm sure that will be discussed.

Other bad news- Evans took himself out of the game in the first half and never came back.

Seemed like guys were hesitant to shoot when they got the ball in a dangerous area. All that possession went to waste.

There might have been 1,000 people at the match, but after last night's game, most everyone seemed to have a hangover. Between the play and the crowd, it just seemed kind of dull today.

The Pilots had some life until Evans went out, then it seemed as if someone reminded them they were on Fall Break and they decided to quit shooting the ball. Jeez guys, shoot the dang ball, something will eventually happen!

As mentioned, Baarts played very well until the final play; I just hope the Gael that took the boot in the face is resting comfortably. The entire game was quite physical....lots of bumps, bruises, and blood today.

A shout-out to Joe Sleven (I think that's who it was) for a wonderful header away from the goal mouth that kept the game scoreless until OT.

The men don't play at home again until November 2 against LMU....I can wait. Evil or Very Mad

No, not the gusher....that WAS on a header.

On the final play of the game, when Baarts came way (too far) out, he totally wiped out Mendoza who had just scored the game winner over his head from about 20 yards out. Mendoza was still prone on the field and being attended to when we left Merlo.

It might have been a knee or thigh instead of a boot, but on an afternoon when I felt the officiating was uneven, nothing was called. Shocked

If the ref had called the foul on that play he would have had to disallow the goal, since the foul requires a restart at the spot of the foul. That's what advantage is all about.

He could, I suppose, have carded Baarts after, but the game is over- what's the point?

The point, in my mind, would have been a justified yellow card moving forward the next match...or do they not have that kind of carryover in NCAA soccer?

( Is this guy your son or something? Wink )

Maybe, maybe not. Violent charges are not in the NCAA rulebook under cautionable offences, only under violations, which, though they can be cautionable, often aren't.
(automatic cards are really serious things like wearing the wrong color uniform or jewelry - look it up)

The prescribed penalty for charging in a violent manner ( rule 12.6.4 ) is a direct free kick, which was mooted by the goal to end the game. You saw several such charges by pilots and Gaels that received only that penalty. One by a Gael knocked over a UP defender and Baarts in one play. The penalty there was a kick, no caution. That same player undercut a UP player in the air right in front of the scores table - again no caution, though that may have been because the guy managed to hurt himself more than the UP player when the UP player landed on him and drove his face into the turf. The only cards I saw today involved repeated infringements. This was a first for Baarts today.

I'm not even clear if the guy who got hurt wasn't the Gael who was having a fine time knocking into other players. That whole team wasn't exactly a bunch of wallflowers.

Likewise, the prescribed penalty for dangerous play (12.8 ) is only a direct free kick.
Denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity is a red, but since he scored, there can be no denial. and a tactical foul to prevent a score is cautionable, but you have to establish that was one of those cases, and again, the guy scored. It looked to me like both players went for the ball. They both made a hash of it, at least at first.

There is no provision to add to the penalty because somebody gets hurt. The gusher and Evans got hurt with no fouls at all.

the referee Has the option to add a card in both cases, but he doesn't have to, and in several instances in this game he didn't.

One reason could be the experience of this ref, who at one time had a FIFA referee rating from the Egyptian FA and has done international matches. I didn't notice if he was wearing a white badge today. Those guys will allow an awful lot of contact if two players are going for a ball and usually will only bring out their cards if the was a denial of a goal or something. They recognize the stakes are elevated for both players to win the ball with the game on the line.

But to answer you question on carry-overs. Yes, five yellows and you sit a game. Then you sit after three more, then every two thereafter.

Theoretically, could he have played advantage? If he did he should have signaled it and I didn't see that. Didn't look like DOGSO to me because the opportunity wasn't very obvious.

If you're saying Baarts could go into the next match already on a yellow, so one more and he's off, no. Cards only apply to the game in which you get them. It would count toward his season record.

I don't think college referees wear FIFA badges even if they have one. In college games they're supervised by a collegiate association, not USSF. That's why they wear those stuck-in-the-90s pattern shirts instead of the ones with the pinstripes.

In reverse order...

I have seen referees wear their FIFA badges if they have them on Merlo pitch in a college game. It's not universal, but they can and do. I'm pretty sure you can find a picture of Sandra Hunt wearing hers in a UP match.
The whole badge thing changed this year with a Brit taking charge of the USA referee system. If you have sorted it out, let us know.

As to cards, it is as I stated. Five yellows in any matches and you sit in the NCAA. Then three more and you sit again. Then you sit for any two you accumulate in any match.
The results of your accumulations carry over to the next yearAssuming you are eligible. The actual cards do not.

I didn't say it was DOGSO. I said if it was it would have been irrelevAnt since the score was made. There is no denial if there is a score. There might or might not be a caution ( yellow).
And referees are now instructed NOT to call advantage in and around the box in order to keep their options open. They are rather instructed to let the events play out before signaling anything. Events close to the goal play out, usually, before the waiting period for advantage is done anyway.

Gaels did not look very strong going forward - at least compared to Santa Clara. This may have had something to do with the defence looking more settled. That said, I think Boggs at centre back adds a very physical and steady presence. This is probably the third or fourth back four combination, so there are bound to be some misadventures. Recent experiences with this may have influenced Justin's thought process on the winning goal.
Evans appeared to injure himself on an attempted overhead kick. Hopefully it is nothing serious. The coaches do need to figure out a Plan B for when he is unavailable or double teamed. It seemed like using 2 strikers with Evans in behind at the end of the Santa Clara game provided better scoring chances.
