Back when I played (no cracks about balls made of rags and duct tape) everybody played the 3-5-2 or 5-3-2. You still see it occasionally (Fla. and Purdue this year). Now it seems the 4-4-2 or diamond 4-4-2 is all the rage. Different teams use the formation quite differently.

I thought I'd see what the other possibilities are and maybe get some new thinking into my calcified old brain and came up with a couple of good sites.

The first is geared towards youth coaches and gives a good overview. We all probably know most of this stuff, but it's presented well enough that it's still worth reading.

Start with these two links:
http://www.bettersoccermorefun.com/dwtext/totalsoc.htm
http://www.bettersoccermorefun.com/dwtext/countera.htm

you'll see pretty good representations this weekend of the two styles. There are other links there if you really want to kill time.

The other place is at the European Champion's League site. it has some video of interviews with the Swedish National team coach and a Premier league coach as they discuss pretty much all the permutations on offensive and defensive theory. Actually pretty good. This link will get you started:

http://www.uefa.com/trainingground/index.html#34002/128/519235

There will be a pop quiz. Class dismissed.

A few times against TN it looked like they had 5 defenders to try and keep us away...I think we all know how that worked out.

Santa Clara switched to a 4-3-3 some years back; it is the style of play preferred by the Dutch, which emphasizes what the Dutch call "Total Football," which plays upon the adaptability of each player. When a player moves out of position (for instance, if Lopez makes an attacking run forward), her spot is filled by another on the team to retain shape (center backs and right back slide over, the weakside midfielder drops off to cover the space left by the right back...and everyone rotates thusly.) It is intended to be a fluid system where no player is fixed in their "assigned" spot, and requires an enormous amount of tactical awareness. Here is the Wikiepedia link for those who want to learn more:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Football

UNC switched from a 4-3-3 to a 3-4-3 awhile back, too. This system plays the 3 backs in a flat back formation (like the 4 back system), meaning those players have to be extremely fast and organized. It's an attack heavy scheme (are you shocked?) that looks to control the midfield and give room for the 3 forwards to open space and play balls through.

Here's the Wikipedia link on all the various formations:

Geezer, KFTC and anyone else - Please excuse my soccer ignorance, but before 2005, didn't we use a 4-3-3? I just seem to remember there being 4 defenders, 3 mids and 3 forwards from at least 2001 until 2004. I believe I remember us switching to a 4-4-2 for the 2005 championship season. scratch

Perhaps I read box scores and the positions were mislabeled. Sometimes it's difficult for me to look at a game and know exactly what the schemes are that the teams are using. geek <----- That's almost exactly what I really look like. Anyway, it sure looks like what I see in the mirror!

FANatic, I'm fairly positive it's always been a 4-4-2, which the Pilots converted to in 1998, with perhaps some slight modifications. But in 2001-2002, Erin Misaki played OCM, while Betsy Barr played DCM, with a variety of different people playing OM and F (Rogers, O'Hanley, Del Bosque, Moore, Patterson, Heller, Bosa, Casagrande, Sinclair) . The backline was a fairly steady group of Smart, Orlandos, Dorsey, and Goodling (with a few variations with some of the players mentioned above.) For the '02 Championship, I am fairly positive they went with 4 in the back (Roger, Orlandos, Dorsey, Moore), 4 in the middle (Barr, Huie, Misaki, Patterson), and 2 up top (Sinclair, Roswadowska).

After Misaki graduated, Huie moved into the OCM position, and Woznuk came in a filled the OM spot Huie vacated; Sari came in at the DCM spot, and things slowly filled in around them.

UP has experimented with different formations over the years, but they are no strangers to the diamond 4-4-2.

As far back as the mid 90's (probably earlier) they had Justi as the attacking mid and Holly Pierce as the holding mid.
The first championship had Erin Misaki and Betsey Barr pairing up, and I think it's fair to say that Megan and Lisa played the same roles in 2005.

Wozzie only came in the middle after Megan got hurt, even though that's her natural position.

Thanks fellow forum gurus. I stand corrected and educated.

That's what is so great about this site. I don't think I would ever have known that without your easy to understand comments!
