Zack Farmer picks Pepperdine to finish last in the WCC this year, just one spot behind UP..……
OUTLOOK
This year is very similar to last year for Pepperdine. The Waves are incredibly young, inexperienced. Their saving grace a year ago was their top two rebounders, Corbin Moore and Taylor Darby. They are gone.
Health is another big concern. Lorne Jackson, Jan Maehlen, Moriba De Freitas, Dane Suttle, Jr., and Hector Harold all missed time in 2011-12. Three of them (Jackson, Maehlen, De Freitas) are back and hopefully fully recovered.
BACKCOURT
They have a guard with some promise in Jordan Baker. He was impressive in spots during conference play but he will need to be more consistent. Baker had a stretch where he scored in double-figures in nine of 10 games, including a 26-point performance at USF, but followed it up with five games of nine or fewer in the final eight games.
Senior Lorne Jackson should provide a steadying force for the young Waves team. Jackson, who missed all of last season with an ACL tear, would have been the team’s leading returning scorer last season and his return will be a big boost for a team that averaged 59 points per game.
“He’s probably back to where he was a year ago, playing well, scoring the ball,” Wilson said. “Obviously, our best scoring threat from the perimeter. So it sets me at ease knowing we have a guy that’s proven, that’s been through the battles and understands what we’re trying to do to help build this program.”
FRONTCOURT
A key for the Waves will be the health of Jan Maehlen. The 7-footer has struggled to stay on the floor and missed all but three games last season with multiple injuries, getting a medical redshirt. Because the lack of depth in the frontcourt, Maehlen needs to stay healthy if for nothing else to grab rebounds. Moore and Darby accounted for more than 14 rebounds.
Wilson said Maehlen is in better shape and is feeling much better about himself.
Pepperdine also hopes to get a boost from freshman forward Stacy Davis. He was named to the Arizona Republic Division II all-state second team while averaging 20.8 points and 9.9 rebounds per contest.
Wilson has him penciled in to a bunch of minutes his freshman season and will be able to score inside and outside.
Cuesta College transfer Malte Kramer had knee surgery in the summer and, according to Wilson, his recovery is going well. Kramer will be able to spread the floor with his ability to shoot the basketball. He once made 9-for-9 from three in a half.
“Having those bullets in your gun is a big plus,” said Wilson.

Taking advantage of the adage, “You can never have enough power forwards,” Pepperdine just received a verbal commitment from David Jepperson out of Merrill, Wisconsin.
At 6-8, 185 lbs, I think it’s a good bet young David will sit for a year while the FOUR PF’s ahead of him on the PU roster get some playing time this coming season.

Word on the street is Jordan Baker is joining Jan Maehlen and Ramon Eaton on the transfer list.
Baker is a very, very good shooting guard who's been a bit inconsistent at times, but was being counted on to help get PU out of the WCC cellar this year.

Hmm, Pepperdine signed combo guard (he prefers being a point guard), Marley Biyendolo from Australia for this coming season. I don’t think PU’s biggest shortage is at PG, they now have two coming in as freshmen and two more on the roster, but they probably went for the best possible athlete available.
He reminds me a little of Patty Mills, but when I say little, I don’t mean Marley is small….at 6-4 and still growing, he could pose a problem for WCC guards.

One would have to assume Stephen Holt out of Jesuit in Portland will be the starter this year for St. Mary’s, but Coach Bennett will definitely be looking for another PG for the future after Cullen Neal was released from his LOI to play for his dad at New Mexico

In 2014-15, at point guard Saint Mary's will have Jordan Giusti (RS Junior), Jorden Page if he is unable to play this season and comes back for a 6th year, and walk-on Treaven Duffy (RS Sophomore).
But whoever Saint Mary's has at point guard this season will have no experience play point guard since Dellavedova essentially played all 40 minutes for 4 years (alongside another PG McConnell for the first 2).

It's now being reported that senior PF Moriba De Freitas is looking to go elsewhere...probably home to Trinidad.
I remember being very impressed by the 6-9/220 De Freitas in UP's home OT loss to PU...very athletic, and an excellent rebounder, he was just getting accustomed to D-1 ball after two years of community college and one medical redshirt year at PU.

I see starting SG Malcom Brooks is leaving the team after only one year a PU.
Brooks, from Brooklyn via two years at Lamar CC, was playing well.....who knows what goes into the decisions these young men make, or have made for them.

Brooks, who would have been a starter at the three next year and who had some very high scoring outbursts towards the end of his only year at PU, has moved on to Cal State Fullerton where he will sit a year before playing in his final season of collegiate eligibility.DoubleDipper wrote:I see starting SG Malcom Brooks is leaving the team after only one year a PU.
I believe Brooks' defection leaves a walk-on as the only member of the Waves senior class after four others preceded Brooks out the door over the last few years.

Pepperdine will honor his scholarship over the next two years so he can graduate, and it will not count against their 13 due to his injury.

Lots of coaching changes in the WCC in the last couple of years, 6/10, I believe, but, Marty was/is my favorite because he's a great guy and role model much as TP is.
Some coaches are fun to yell at and root against, but Marty has always been a guy who deserves and gets the respect of players and fans...too bad that didn't translate into wins.

So, great recruiter that could not win at the PAC-12 level? Wonder if he can do better in the WCC based on talent alone.

The amazing thing about this is about two weeks ago, it looked like Romar would be taking over at Arizona.
But now that Miller seems to be staying put and Arizona has lost all their recruits... I guess Lorenzo decided to come back to Malibu for round two.

Interesting that Romar's first offer to a recruit goes to a point guard from Long Beach Poly, 6-0/145, Darryl Polk, Jr.
Interesting because PU already has four scholarship point guards, two of whom will be sophomores next season.
I think we can expect some personnel changes in Malibu....
