Knee pads were a very important fashion statement then. If they were integrated with the socks, all the better.

We must have fallen down a lot then.

But, in my mind, the "Father of the Knee Pads" was former De Paul and Minneapolis Laker legend, "Mr. Basketball" George Mikan. Legend has it he spent almost 18 months in bed with a shattered knee as a youth, so took to wearing the knee pads sometime in the early 40's at De Paul. (Those socks the Nebraska team is wearing in the picture are the same style socks the Pilots wore until the late 60's)
