When will we find out if Barker will be granted a red shirt year? I assume the program has to apply to the NCAA? Any news or gossip?

I thought I read somewhere that in regards to medical redshirts the student athlete petitions for the year if and when he needs it. In other words he meets the criteria but wouldnt apply for it until his "senior" year. Im sure there is a link somewhere but darn if I know how to find it.

I understand it is recommended the application be made soon after the end of the season in which the injury occours so that all the documentation is fresh and the facts are still known/remembered. I don't believe it is specified exactly when after the injury season the application should be made.

There are, of course, many criteria for approval of the application, but this from livestron.com might help:
Any injury being considered in an application for a medical redshirt must occur in the first half of a team's season. Additionally, the player may not have competed in more than two contests for the school, or in more than 20 percent of the season, whichever is greater. If a player competes in the second half of the season, he is ineligible for a medical redshirt.

To prevent players, coaches and/or schools from lying about the state of an injury and its progress over time, teams must provide documentation from doctors, physical therapists, or other licensed medical professionals depicting the progression of the player's injury over the course of the season, and confirming that the injury or medical condition could not have been overcome with time remaining for the player to return to competitive play. Because of this condition, medical redshirt applications are not submitted until after a season's completion, when all information is available. Doctors and other medical professionals are governed by ethics and occupational laws, and face steep punishment if they are discovered to have lied in this documentation. In some cases, they risk losing their right to practice medicine.
Riley competed in less than 20% of the contests and did not compete the second half of the year.

I'm pretty sure the NCAA doesn't say anything about preventing people from lying.

The assumption is that everyone is above board.

Trust but verify.

Basketball Riley received his medical redshirt and will be a redshrt sohpmore this coming season. Very Happy

(Just to head off the anticipated question, it has to be left up to the staff or Riley to comment on the condition of his knee and his prognosis for this coming season).

If you haven't been to the Chiles Center lately and you're looking for an indoor run, forget about it! With all the construction going for new offices, etc., the weight room and lots of other stuff now occupies the upstairs track.

I saw that photo set on facebook yesterday... I'm assuming the weights were moved up to the track while the actual weight room renovation is being completed?

Hahhaha I pity the person whose job it was to move that....

I'd just ask if there are any athletes that want to get paid for a workout.

Question for Geezer: Are you now or have you ever been a member of the communist party?

By the way, while our esteemed poet Whitman was busying himself with his description of "base" ball and the quality of the air in which the game was played, an army officer, Abner Doubleday, was soon to be stationed at one Fort Sumter, South Carolina, and to be there when it was bombarded--Doubleday probably knew less about baseball than Whitman.

I suppose the answer to your question, Senator, is that I belong to no organized political party, but that doesn't narrow the possibilities down any. pirat

Abner was supposed to have codified the rules of baseball around 1843, well before he went South. That he invented it is a highly dubious claim. No copies in his handwriting from those days exist. Some versions of the game date back to colonial days. One George Ewing described a game of "Base" at Valley Forge.

Doubleday is also credited with stopping a confederate advance on little round top at Gettysburg, another dubious claim. The Initiative to divert troops from a supply line a mile or so away was actually made by others.

Albert Spalding needed something better than "It evolved out of many stick, ball, and base games" to sell his gear.
