The Pilots beat the Huskies 2-0 this afternoon. The first half was scoreless. Early in the second half Amanda made a great cross to Micaela who put it in the back of the net. A few minutes later Amanda had breakaway and scored on her own. The Pilots looked good. I will give a better update when I get home unless someone else does it it in the meantime.

Thanks for the report. I was thinking about it all afternoon.

But, although you get paid by the word, you don't get paid by the thread! Bad PC

Dang. That second post was a fat finger error.

There was a cold wind blowing at the UW soccer field. They moved the entrance and restrooms to the players side of the field, possibly because of construction going on behind the bleachers. As usual the Pilots had a good turnout as did the Huskies for a Spring game. The former Pilots I spotted were Wynne Macintosh with husband and 3 small children and Keelin who was sitting next to Wynne at halftime when I spotted her. Getting paid by the word encourages one to set the scene rather than just jump into the play by play.

The Pilots had 13 players, the Huskies a few more. Neither Garrett nor Lisa was there, at least they weren't on the bench. Bill I. was doing the coaching. The Pilots started with Erin in goal, Taylor, Lorielle, Sarah, Kendall, Michelle, Rebekah, Ellen, Amanda, Kaila and Micaela on the field. The Pilots had the run of play for most of the first half. At one point there was a scrum in front of the UW goal with the Pilots getting 3 or 4 shots, but none of them went in. The UW keeper was injured at some point in the half and limped off. Amanda went down later in the half and stayed down for a while to the distress of the Pilot fans, but she eventually got back up and did not seem to suffer any ill effects. Emily came in for Michelle about 2/3's of the way through the half. The half ended with no scoring having occurred.

The start of the second half saw one change in the original Pilot lineup, with Nichole taking over in goal. Early in the half Amanda worked herself free on the left side and made a beautiful cross to a poorly marked Micaela who put the ball in the back of the net. It gets a little fuzzy here because I thought she headed it in and the friends I went with thought she kicked it in. Either way it was a nice goal. A few minutes later Amanda made a nice run and made a hard strike for a goal. The Pilots had a few other opportunities including a couple of nice runs by Kaila who used her speed to blow by her defenders, but they didn't result in goals. Midway through the second half Michaela appeared to bang knees with a UW player and went down while play went on. She eventually was helped off and spent the rest of the half with what appeared to be an ice pack on her knee. She seemed to be in good spirits at the end of the game which hopefully means it was just a bang and not serious.

The officiating was fine in the first half, but deteriorated in the second. The linesman on our side of the field made three or four calls which had the Pilot fans hooting. Eventually one of the UP parents (who was doing his fair share of hooting) pointed out it was just a Spring game and maybe we should lighten up. He was right of course, but they were pretty bad calls and it's hard to ignore them, Spring or not.

All in all I thought the Pilots looked good. They played 40 minute halves and they did seem to slow down a bit by the end, but they more than held their own against an opponent they've not had a lot of success with lately. It was wonderful to see them on the field. Kendall played at full speed with her usual passion which was great to see. They lost some fine players at the end of last season, but that's the nature of college sports. I think they are going to be a lot of fun to watch this year. I took my camera, but forgot to take it out of my backpack until I got home - sorry.

Good to hear the team did well. One thing we really can't afford is having our players dinged up.

The up UW website announced a major remodel of the soccer stadium last year. Did it look like that was starting, or was the construction just related to the Husky stadium renovation?

Did you ask Keelin what's up with the roster spot?

When will Wynn's kids be eligible?

Too bad you were just under the word minimum.

I got really excited there for a second, but I think you meant UW.

Here is the article on the Husky soccer stadium.

Husky Soccer Stadium

The
Spoiler:
season marks the ninth season of competition at Husky Soccer Field, a soccer-only facility on campus that opened during the fall of 1997. The Huskies ranked among the nation's women's soccer attendance leader during each of their first eight seasons at Husky Soccer Field. The 72 x 120 field, located alongside Lake Washington north of Husky Stadium and just south of the Montlake parking lot, provides the Husky men's and women's program with a top-notch playing field on a year-round basis.

The Husky Soccer Stadium Project is currently underway as part of the Campaign for the Student Athlete. The funds raised will build a covered 3,000-seat stadium that includes locker rooms, a press box, concessions, restrooms, a team room, coaches satellite office and a souvenir shop. Those amenities are part of the combined soccer/baseball stadium project, which carries an estimated cost of $18 million. The soccer and baseball complexes will share a common entry plaza.

The construction of a soccer stadium will benefit both the highly successful men's and women's programs. The two Husky soccer programs have built a winning tradition during the past decade. In 2000, the men's and women's teams both won their respective Pac-10 championships. In recent years, the combined programs have advanced to the NCAA Tournament 15 times and boast an impressive overall record of 270-146-38. The addition of a permanent home stadium will enhance the home-field advantage and provide an environment for even greater success in the years ahead.

The popularity of youth soccer in the state of Washington is at an all-time high. The addition of a permanent soccer facility will help fill the void of a quality medium-sized stadium. In addition to serving Husky student-athletes, this facility will provide opportunities to host high-level games involving youth national teams as well as local area high school and club championships.

Note the date under the spoiler.
The baseball stadium got built. Last year they renewed the commitment to a 3000 seat stadium when they hired the new men's coach away from Creighton ( which has a beautiful stadium).

We shall se if they find the money this time.

Darn, that word minimum must have been in the extra fine print on my contract that I neglected to read.

It was hard to tell what is going on behind the bleachers at the soccer field. A large area is torn up. There is gravel fill that has raised the whole area two or three feet above the level of the current field. There were some areas with curved pieces of rebar exposed to the surface - as if they were anchors for something. We speculated on whether it was a parking structure or a new field or something completely different, coming to no conclusion.

I'm not as bold as some people I know so didn't feel right about approaching Keelin. She did come sit with the parents for a few minutes and I tried to listen in surreptitiously, but the only thing I heard was that she was recently in Mexico and got a sunburn.

Wynne's kids are young, a girl about 5, a boy about 3 and an infant. They are plenty active though - the two older ones rarely sat down the whole time.

Can you tell us little bit about what positions our players played yesterday?

Who filled in at cenerback with Laurielle (presuming that's where she played)?

Did we play three forwards?

Mid-fielders?

It looked to me like they played 4-4-2 although sometimes it seemed like 3-5-3. I don't really pay as much attention to the positions as some of the rest of you. The defense (besides the goalies) was Taylor on the right and Kendall on the left outside, Lorielle and Sarah inside. Mids were Michelle, Rebekah, Ellen and Amanda. Forwards were Micaela and Kaila.

I kind of thought that you lined them up in order in your earlier post but wanted to make sure that Sarah played inside. Did she look OK playing yet another new position as a Pilot? By the way, thank you so much for your posts, keeping us informed!!
