March Madness Thread Empty March Madness Thread

Post by Guest Thu Mar 08, 2012 5:40 pm

Thought I might as well get one started.

First topic: how much does the UDub losing their first game in the Pac-12 tournament as a #1 seed to #9 seed OS hurt the Pilot's RPI? Also, is it a good idea for players to practice free throws every day in the off season?

At this point, I just hope UW doesn't make the tourney! Pilots' RPI be damned!

More seriously, BYU is a bubble team, and if the Pac-12 bubble teams continue to flop in their tourney, that may open a door for the Cougars.

Per ESPN Bubble Watch:
Brigham Young [25-8 (12-4), RPI: 47, SOS: 104] After this weekend's WCC semifinals loss to Gonzaga, BYU is basically where it was last week, and where it's been for nearly all of Bubble Watch season -- squarely on the bubble. Other than a home win over Gonzaga in early February, the Cougars' best victories are as follows: Nevada, Oregon, Weber State, Buffalo. Its RPI is in reasonable territory, but it hardly demands inclusion, and the rest of the resume (3-6 vs. the top 50, 5-6 vs. the top 100, so-so schedule strength) means Dave Rose's team is likely to be sweating Selection Sunday in a major way.

Just saw a duck player slip on the logo at mid court. It cost them possession and 2 points in their game with Colorado.

Yea, it also happened during a Big East Tournament game at The Garden today. But, instead of allowing play to continue, the refs took the unusual step of blowing their whistles and calling an "official timeout" so they could take a look at the floor problem.

I'm not sure "common sense" is allowed by the officiating rule book, but it was good to see and was accepted by BOTH coaches as the correct thing to do. WOW!!!!

(I’m guessing the logos are all being purchased cheaply in China, and all this slipping and sliding is a Communist plot of some sort!!!!!)

And Oregon loses by one point. So the #1 and #3 seeds don't make the semi finals of the Pac-12. And another bubble team loses to a lower seed. BYU may get there yet. And the tourney winner may be the only Pac-12 team to get an invite, especially if it's Cal.

NOT impressed with the level of play I've seen so far in the Pac-12 Tourney. The Pac-12 may get higher profile athletes, but are they coachable? If they are, I'm not impressed at all with the coaching! Haven't seen Cal play yet, but Oregon was dreadful.

The Pac 12 has been bad all year. Oregon will have a good chance of defending their CBI title, though.

Anybody going to the Rose Garden next weekend? As long as there's no Washington or Gonzaga like last time I'll be happy with whoever comes.

I think there's a good chance we'll see GU in the Rose Garden this year.

clown I'll root loud and long for any WCC team in the Dance this year, especially the established teams.

Why not the newer school? With a student body over 10 times the size of UP and a fan base probably closer to 100 times the size of UP's, it's difficult for me to wrap my arms anyone but the David’s and their slingshots. I appreciate they've raised the profile of the WCC, but I can't but think they are only here temporarily. tongue

Wow, CU and UA in the Pac-12 final?

Does Cal even make the Dance?

I think all three WCC teams are IN, but Cal may not get the benefit of the doubt after going out against CU.

What do you think? SMC a 6; GU an 8; and BYU a 12?

Got home from Pilots baseball in time to watch the end of UNM vs. SDSU and Colorado vs. UA on the DVR. Pretty good games; great atmosphere in Las Vegas!

Looks to me like the Mountain West gets four teams in: CSU; UNLV; SDSU; and UNM. WCC three teams: SMC; GU; and BYU. So what about the Pac-12? Just CU? Or does Cal sneek in?

Looking forward to UCSB vs. Long Beach tonight. There's not going to be much representation from the west in the Dance this year -- with good reason! Embarassed

No WCC teams in Portland, it appears. Unless Portland hosts team from multiple regions (I can't remember if that is the case).

BYU in a play-in game vs Iona as a 14 seed in Louisville.

Gonzaga a 7 seed in Pittsburgh, playing #10 WVU.

Cal sneaks in as a 12 seed, playing a play-in game in Nashville vs USF. No, not that USF, the South Florida USF.

BYU in a play in game, against Iona, for a 14 seed.

Was a team ever more unexited than Ohio State to get a #2 seed?

Gonzaga with a #7 seed.

Cal is in a play-in game for a #12 seed. UO and UW (PAC-12 season champs) left out.

St. Mary also gets a #7 seed.

So, three WCC teams in, and two are #7 seeds. And only two from the PAC-12, with Colorado at #11 the highest seed.

I must have missed it, but what seed are the Pilots?

In all seriousness, Rochin54 you need to set up our bracket challenge. I need to yet again prove how little I know about college basketball.

That's essentially a home game for the Mountaineers. I did this:

Shocked

Then I did this:

lol!

Saint Mary's/Purdue is a really intriguing matchup.

Rumor has that R54 is on the case, and has a back-up plan in place. So start working on your picks!

Agreed. Gonzaga has their work cut out for them. I'm not sure how deserving BYU was of getting an invite, but, the WCC did land more tournament teams than the Pac-12. How long has it been since the WCC sent 3 teams to the tourney on the men's side?
