Yes, it's that time again. In the next couple of weeks a half dozen or so local purveyors will get a couple kegs each and the local Pliny fans will get stoopid(er).

Last year my local establishment made the mistake of saying on their Facebook page that they were tapping the next day, and 250 or so lunatics line up from as far away as Medford and the Dalles to get one ten oz. glass. The short keg was gone in about an hour.

Oh, and expect you will tender closer to $9 than $4.50.

Is that $9 for a 10 oz. glass?? Good grief, it's an IPA, not ambrosia! Duck!

I consider myself a bit of a low rate beer snob, but like the tastes of most people, my taste for beer has changed over time. I’ve drunk Pliny, but back in the day, a long time ago, just after dinosaurs roamed the Bluff, when hippies were in full flower, and fraternity brothers still walked the UP campus – Coors (not Coors Light) was the beer of choice at UP for only one reason: It was not distributed anywhere in the Northwest.

We would bring Coors in by the trunk and back seat load from California (in my ’59 Impala convertible), and quickly become the big men on campus because we supplied such an “exotic” beer to the unsuspecting undergrads. In those days, Coors was the Pliny of the today.

Mind you, Pliny is a wonderful beer (I’ve only had a pint), but the same kind of mystique that now surrounds Pliny is the same that surrounded Coors at UP at one time. So, much like Prohibition resulted in a clamoring for most any kind of alcoholic drink, I contend the great marketing strategy of the Russian River Brewing Company has placed Pliny in high demand (and high price), not just the beer itself. Shocked

Well if you were drinking Coors back in the "hippies in full flower" days, you definitely had different politics than mine! I did have a Pliny's last year at a local spot recommended by the Geez, just down the street from where I live, and I was so hopped up that I slept all afternoon. First time I've had a beer that made me feel like I'd just finished Thanksgiving dinner.

I forgot to mention that when folks had been given their ten oz Pliny the Younger, they complained when they were told their second pull would have to be a pint of the Elder.

COMPLAINED!!!!

The Younger is like the Elder only hoppy (Wrap that around your brain). Strangely, it tastes smoother. If that isn't ambrosia, I ont know what is...

afro Oh, I didn’t drink it, I was a supplier. The fraternity’s adult beverage of choice was BLITZ-WEINHARD, or as we called it, Blitz! And, it was always in bottles or kegs (no new fangled twist-tops or cans). We always supported the Portland artisans, AND they would give a free tour of their brewery (with complimentary samples) twice a year!!!

When my dad went to school his fraternity loved road trips to Idaho because the drinking age was 19.

My wife tells me that in Colorado, the age was 18 -- but you had to drink 3.2 beer -- and since Coors produced it, it was a good test of the politics of 18-year olds. You probably can get a pretty good idea whether politics won.

Beer and its politics; I must admit, that is something I’ve never considered when downing a cold one. scratch

I can only assume you mean the conservative, right-leaning stance the Coors Brewing Company has taken over the years that got it in trouble with, among others, gays, lesbians, Blacks, Mexican-Americans, and organized labor. I believe that all came to a head in the 70’s, years after I had returned from my second tour in Vietnam, and while I was serving in Europe.

Not going to discuss politics here on the Women’s Soccer page, nope, won’t do it. However, I may just head down to my local tavern (not my local union house – I’m a card carrying Teamster!) and grab my first Coors in 46 years and see how it tastes – free of any political stance.

You, PPT, must have the most honest, upstanding dad ever. Most just had ID that kept them in Oregon/Washington to drink as regulars at the local taverns. It was always great fun when, on that person's 21st birthday, they would show up at their local with their “real” ID asking for the free "birthday beer" that most locals advertised -- including the T-Room. Shocked

Um...

When I said it tastes like water, that was a euphemism.

Well, I learned something about Coors at yesterday’s Super Bowl party, you can drink three cans of it while eating barbecued meats of all types, and it washes them down really, really well without changing the taste of the meat; similar to water in that respect.

For dessert it was back to the real beer, no not Pliny, but instead Blind Pig IPA pig ; very, very tasty.

I went to John's Marketplace yesterday and got the LAST bottle of their Pliny the Elder (according to them). They said they can't get Pliny the Younger. They also said they have another order in, but don't expect it to be filled by Russian River.
