Nevada Empty Nevada

Post by DoubleDipper Mon Dec 19, 2011 11:38 pm

After losing to Utah Sad , a team currently ranked #305, we now have the 10th toughest schedule in men’s basketball; down six spots from yesterday.

Our Pilots (2-9 in D-1 play) have dropped further in the ranking to #219, and will play a very, very athletic #102 Nevada team (8-3). I remember thinking last year when we beat the Wolf Pack at the Chiles Center that I did not want to play them this year knowing how mature they were becoming while we were going to be so much less athletic and experienced.

Nevada is favored in this game by 12 points with an 85% probability of winning. Their only losses have come at the hands of very good teams: Missouri State, BYU, and UNLV. They beat two teams we lost to, UW and Montana.
I'll let someone else write about the individual players. Sleep

Alright. Let's settle down the second half, "D" up, and battle our way back into this game.

By circumstance, I learned to watch a 2011-12 Pilots game and enjoy it tonight.

My flight was considerably delayed by a mechanical problem, and by the time I walked into the arena in Reno it was just in time to see Thomas lay one in to make the score 34-10 in Nevada’s favor. After that, I saw almost nothing but winning Pilots basketball.

I cannot say enough how well our guys hung in there against a much more athletic and active team. We hit our free throws, we rebounded, we turned it over and over and over, and again we couldn’t hit the 3! Tim and Nem started tonight in preparation for WCC play, but Nem continues to struggle as a marked man. But most importantly, it was a breakout game for KB, as he used his athleticism against Nevada’s and performed better than I’ve seen this season.

Don’t be discouraged PN, the 25 minutes of Pilot basketball I saw this evening was winning basketball. santa

Pilots Conclude Non-Conference Play with Loss at Nevada

RENO, Nev. --- The Portland Pilots concluded their rigorous non-conference schedule with a 78-60 loss to the Nevada Wolf Pack on Thursday at the Lawlor Events Center before 3,651 fans. Freshman guard Kevin Bailey scored a season-high 15 points to lead the Pilots, while sophomore guard Tim Douglas added 12 points. Nevada won its sixth straight game and improved to 9-3 overall. Portland lost its sixth consecutive game and will enter West Coast Conference play with a 3-10 overall record.

Nevada appeared to put the game away early with a 22-0 run midway through the first period to take a 28-point following a three-pointer by Malik Story with 5:58 left. The Pilots closed the half on a 14-6 run and trailed 46-26 at the break, but came out of the locker room with great energy to start the second half. Portland scored the first seven points of the period and would manage to cut the deficit to single digits at 53-44 on a three-point play by Bailey with 10:28 remaining. Nevada promptly responded with a 10-0 run to secure the victory.

Portland forced a season-high 19 turnovers by the Wolf Pack, but also committed a season-high 24 which led to a 28-19 Nevada edge in points off of turnovers. The Pilots shot 41 percent from the field and were 3-of-14 on three-pointers. Nevada shot 50 percent from the floor and converted 8-of-19 threes.

Seniors Dario Hunt and Olek Czyz led the Wolf Pack with 15 points each. Hunt also collected his fifth double-double of the season with 11 rebounds.

Portland will take a brief break for the Holidays before opening WCC play on the road at Gonzaga on Wednesday, Dec. 28. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the game will be televised live on ROOT Sports. All Pilot games air on the radio live with a 30-minute pregame show on True Talk 800 AM (KPDQ) and simulcast on www.portlandpilots.com.
