NCAA tournament

Post by eProf on Sun Nov 20, 2011 9:29 pm

St. Mary's is doing the WCC proud. Beat CSU Bakersfield on Thursday 1-0, and beat UC Irvine (#8 overall seed) this evening 2-1 in overtime. Both games were on the road for the Gaels.

It was rainy in Irvine tonight, and the field was clearly not built for good drainage.

Next up for the Gaels is Brown, who also made it through as an unseeded team to the round of 16.

After only having 6 west coast teams in the tournament, there is now 4 west coast teams in the final 16... Good luck to all of them
St. Mary's has an excellent chance to continue their run. Although I'd rather see the Pilots doing it, it's good that they are representing the WCC well. Perhaps it will result in a little bit more love from the committee next year

Putting that another way, no west coast team has lost a tournament game, except to another west coast team.

GOOOAAAALLL!!!! It’s an all North Carolina final at Hoover, Alabama in the final of the Men’s College Cup on ESPNU on Sunday at 4PM EST/1PM PST.

In two very good games to watch on ESPNU this evening, the unseeded Charlotte 49ers (18-4-3) beat the #2 Creighton Blue Jays (21-4) and will play the #1North Carolina Tar Heels (21-2-2) winners over the #13 UCLA Bruins (18-5-1).

In the first game, the 49ers and Blue Jays failed to score in regulation and both of the 10-minute overtime sessions, but Charlotte converted each of its four penalty kicks, compared to one for Creighton. Charlotte pulled starting goalie Klay Davis for the penalty kicks and replaced him with 6-foot-3 Gavin Dawson, who blocked one shot. Creighton also missed a shot high.

In the nightcap, a game filled with some terrific goals, UCLA and UNC battled to a 2-2 tie in regulation before going scoreless in both 10 minute overtimes. The shootout was won by UNC 3-1 and was noteworthy for the two saves by UNC goalkeeper Scott Goodwin, and a shot that was miles wide left by UCLA.

That was actually a terrific game to watch. The match was ALL Charlotte, but the Tar Heels had one chance and Peas converted it with a Golazo.

Such is soccer.

Thanks for jumping in with that, Geez. I too thought it was a great game to view, it's just that there was so little reaction on PN after the semi-final on Friday, I thought I would throw out the Sleep because no one appeared interested.

With Charlotte outshooting NC 14-3 in the second half, I thought for sure they would pull it out. As you so aptly said: "Such is soccer." Duck!
