Men's Soccer Wins Comeback Thriller to Stay in WCC Title Hunt

11/11/2011 9:50:00 PM

PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots capped a thrilling comeback with a golden goal by sophomore Steven Evans midway through double overtime for a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Dons on Friday night at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. The win keeps Portland’s hopes for a West Coast Conference title alive with a huge match on Sunday against Santa Clara to close out the regular season.

After conceding a late goal in regulation it appeared that Portland’s hopes for a league title had gone wayside. But after controlling the run of play for most of the match, the Pilots finally got a season-saving equalizer with 65 seconds left from sophomore Thomas Iwasaki. Sophomore Ricardo Carillo set up the goal with a run down the right sideline. His short cross was deflected by a USF defender but found Iwasaki unmarked inside the top of the box. He drilled the sitter inside the left post to push the contest to overtime.

Portland (11-6-1, 6-4-1 WCC) again controlled play throughout the first overtime period, but came up empty. Then Evans got his chance in the 106th minute on a brilliant sequence of passes. Carillo again started the play on the right side and touched the ball to senior Michael Nielsen at the top of the box. Nielson one-touched the ball to senior Ryan Kawulok who sent a short cross to Evans centered in the box. He took one touch and then buried his shot inside the right post to send teammates and the crowd into a frenzy.

A loss would have eliminated the Pilots from having a chance to win the WCC, but after Friday’s comeback the Pilots are still in the thick of the title hunt. With just one game remaining, Sunday at 1 p.m. versus Santa Clara, Portland is tied for second place in the WCC standings with 19 points. Saint Mary’s leads the league with 20 points and will host San Diego on Sunday. A Pilot win, coupled with a Saint Mary’s loss or tie, would give Portland at least a share of the league title and likely the automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs. Portland must win to have a shot at the title.

San Francisco (6-10-2, 4-6-1) looked primed to dash Portland’s title hopes when they struck first late in regulation with a brilliant solo effort by freshman Miguel Aguilar. After gathering a loose ball in the final third, Aguilar took a couple of touches to the middle of the field before unleashing a left-footed blast just inside the left post in the 79th minute for a 1-0 lead.

Portland gained a 20-8 edge in shots for the match and 4-1 margin in corner kicks. Pilot goalkeeper Justin Baarts made three saves, while USF keeper Brendan Roslund was dynamite with 11 saves for the match.

The Pilots will conclude the regular season on Sunday afternoon against Santa Clara with kick-off set for 1 p.m. Portland will recognize Connor Barbaree, Ryan Kawulok and Michael Nielsen with a pre-game ceremony for Senior Day.

Pretty good performance by the boys, the first half was so-so, but they were close to brilliant in the 2nd half and OT. They certainly left it late and probably gave most of the crowd a heart attack, but in the end they took care of business. Look forward to seeing the tension again on Sunday and hoping St. Mary's can drop some points against USD. The only real thing that was missing tonight was the crowd...

Glad I decided to go up to campus late and catch the second half. Looks like you were a winner no matter what game you chose. No idea what the referee was on about tonight but whatever.

Everyone get to Merlo Sunday. The conference is in the balance.

I couldn't have said it better myself! There should be no excuse for not having 4,000+ on Sunday!
And the ref was an absolute laugh, the boys couldn't even touch each other without it being a foul. The game is a contact sport after all! But that being said, he easily could have called Richy for a foul on the goal we scored in regulation....

Unfortunately I do not live close enought to be at the gaime but will be watching ing on video. I agree with UPPilots, let's support or mens team the way the womans team is supported and have the stadium packed, especially on senior night. Be as loud as you can and let them know you are there. WE NEED THIS WIN!!!!!
