2:30pm Tip-off at UW. Pre-game festivities @ Montlake Ale House, 1pm. Radio is on portlandpilots.com and 800AM.

Georgia State is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, under first year coach Ron Hunter.

I dont know much about GSU, but they stayed somewhat close to UW during the first half, but ended up losing 91-74... This is the first time the teams have met on the court.

GO PILOTS!

You may remember Ron Hunter from his last job, at IUPUI, where he did a pretty good job.

The audio feed from portlandpilots.com is quite a bit behind the play by play on espn.com. At least 30 seconds or so. Quite annoying.

Pilots pull it out down the stretch, 66-61!

It is great to see the young team hanging on in games where they trail late, but yet are able to execute and make free throws... just cut down on the turnovers, sheesh!

Lets go for win #3 vs UW tomorrow...!

According to the box score, the points were quite spread out. Nem was our leading scorer with 13. I hope this means that they are playing together well, but I'm interested in what those who went to the game thought.

Well, unlike Saturday when we had great composure, this time – not so much! With 4 minutes to go in the first half we were well in control with a nice lead, and looking like we could clear the bench before the end of the game. At that point Georgia State changed tactics and began pressuring the ball all over the court and we ended up committing 15 turnovers (19 overall) the rest of the game and ended up trailing late in the game.

In the end though, it was again Ryan Nicholas and Derrick Rodgers, joined by Dorian Cason who led us back. Don’t get me wrong, it was a team effort, and missing any member of the team could have meant a losing effort, but those three really busted their rear ends to make sure we didn’t lose.

We substituted liberally, much like a hockey game with two lines of players, something we were able to do with a deeper than ever bench, and needed to do to survive a 3 game tournament. You’d all be proud or our assistant coaches who all conducted one-on-one teaching sessions each timee players came out of the game. And Rev was ACTIVELY coaching the on court players from the sideline

Final impression/thought: if we can learn to overcome the pressure of quick and athletic teams we’ll have some success, if not, it could be long season.

Pilots Improve to 2-0 with Strong Finish Versus Georgia State

SEATTLE, Wash. --- The Portland Pilots made big plays late for the second straight day to improve to 2-0 on the young season with a 66-61 victory over the Georgia State Panthers on Sunday. It was the second game for the Pilots at the World Vision Classic hosted at Alaska Airlines Arena. Senior guard Nemanja Mitrovic led three Pilots in double figures with 13 points.

Portland led by as much as 13 points in the first half, but found itself trailing 52-49 with 6:28 remaining. Consecutive lay-ups by freshmen Thomas van der Mars and Dorian Cason sparked an 11-3 run that gave the Pilots the lead back for good. Portland made 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to secure the win.

Mitrovic, a preseason All-West Coast Conference selection, added six rebounds in another solid all-around performance for the Pilots. Sophomore point guard Tim Douglas chipped in 12 points and five rebounds, while sophomore Ryan Nicholas reached double figures for the second game with 10 points.

Portland shot 52 percent from the field and limited the Panthers (0-2) to 36 percent shooting, but 19 Pilot turnovers kept the game close. Georgia State had a 22-14 edge in points off of turnovers and 19-11 margin in second chance points.

The Pilots ran off a 14-0 run midway through the first half to lead by as much as 13 points before GSU answered with a run to make it 31-23 at the half.

A steal by Tony Kimbro led to a free throw with 6:54 left in the second period to give the Panthers their first lead of the game at 50-49. It was short-lived as the Pilots bounced back with a strong finish for the second game in a row. In the team’s season-opener on Saturday against Florida Atlantic, the Pilots closed the game with a 7-0 run to win 70-65.

The Pilots will conclude the World Vision Classic by facing the host Washington Huskies on Monday at 7 p.m. Washington defeated GSU 91-74 on Saturday and plays FAU on Sunday night. The Portland- Washington game will be aired live on ROOT Sports, while all Pilots games can be heard on the radio on 800 AM (KPDQ).
