Halftime with the lead. It could be worse.

Brasil has scored 5 goals right after the half.

WOW..... The officiating in this game is making it unwatchable... I've seen better in MLS, and that's saying something.

I have seen some poorly officiated games, but this one takes the cake.
1) Ridiculous penalty re-take
2) Brazil goal during extra time off of an obvious (but no called) offside.

FIFA: What do you have to say to this mess?

Brazil loses my respect after that injury stall followed by getting up and running to the team bench and running back onto the field.

Is it still illegal to criticize refs? I have a lot on my mind.

EDIT: There is still humanity left in the world. U-S-A! U-S-A!

Post by DaTruRochin Sun Jul 10, 2011 11:30 am

Even the neutral fans did not appreciate the Brazillian tactics... I guess the ol Sheed proverb "Ball don't lie" really fits this match. (And somehow I think Hope would have had a thing or 2 to say if the game had gone the other way)

I will say Megan may have had some shaky combinations with the ball, but her deliveries were fantastic. Even before the perfect one to tie the goal all her corners and free kicks were continuously dangerous, it was only a matter of time before one was able to find an attacking player.

But 2 lasting impressions, fitness absolutely won this game, Brazil was gassed even up a player for 55 minutes (Just shows what happens when you only give your team a month to prepare). And man that was some stone cold penalty kick taking, no hesitation (even with the GKs attempt to distract) just PURE focus...

Now I wonder, does this mean Steph gets a start with Buehler missing the semis with a questionable at best red suspension?

The soccer gods are smiling on the USA. What a show of strength and will after the team went down a player, then was abused by rotten officiating. No one quit, no one got rattled; they just carried on and made Brazil pay. Never say die ... and Megan is still my idol.

It was the only weekend that worked for everyone in the family. Smile It will be a great day even if the wrong team wins the Sounders vs. Timbers game. I'm probably not as hardcore as some fans since I have connections to both teams involved in that one. Smile

I agree that Meghan's crosses were great, but she seems slow to me, like she has lost a step since college. Is it just the higher level competition, or has she lost a step?

I doubt that Bueler being out brings Stephanie in since Bueler plays in the middle. Only good judgement would bring Steph in, for Lapelbic, although she had a better game today (OK, OK - I know I butchered the spellings).

I wonder if Brazil will learn something from this game about class. The neutral fans had it right.

well, with 38,000 military in Germany (the German Army is only about three times that) I'm not so sure it was neutral. but yeah, i think even the Germans in the stands were disgusted.

Megan's crosses into the box were 5/10 on completions . the rest of the team were 0/18.

Boxx"s cross doesnt count because it was to a Brasilian for an own goal.

Post by fan from afar Sun Jul 10, 2011 7:16 pm

I haven't actually been watching the US team much until the World Cup, but from what I have seen, I think Rampone is probably the best player on the team, certainly the most valuable. She is like a rock back there, like Cloee for the Pilots. I would be interested in what others think.

Also, the Wambach bashers (myself included) will have to admit that in the end, she was the difference. That was an absolute dynamite goal, and I doubt that anyone else could have done that. I don't always like the way she plays, but she does bring an attitude to the team that is priceless. It could be that all the wasted possessions with the long balls aren't so much her fault as the passers of the long balls. I sure wish they would attack through the midfielders more. They actually did after they went down a man.

That is an amazing stat. A combination of the other US players stepping up and the Brazilian team not being in good enough condition.

USA vs Brazil Gl_g_megrts_576
Epics need heroes. Yesterday's epic match between Brazil and the United States produced, at the very least two of them. Here's how Megan Rapinoe and Hope Solo became household names in a little more than two hours.

Dwight Clark can have "The Catch." Megan Rapinoe now has "The Pass."

You could call Rapinoe's pass to Wambach a Hail Mary, but that takes away from how precisely calibrated her 30-some-odd-yard cross really was. The gorgeous, arcing ball seemed to hold up in the air just enough to goad Brazil's keeper, Andreia, into coming out for it. But Andreia got it wrong, punching at nothing as the ball hit Wambach's forehead and ricocheted in.

After scoring, after screaming so loud everyone back home in the States could hear her, and after being mobbed by her teammates, Wambach, towering over the other American women hugging her, looked toward something coming toward her. And there it was: Megan Rapinoe jumping into her arms.

"I don't think I've ever hit a cross with my left foot that well," Rapinoe said after the game. It was reminiscent of the kind of psychic, centimeter-perfect passes that made Juan Roman Riquelme into a national folk hero in his home country of Argentina.

There's the fairy-tale version of this story that focuses on Megan Rapinoe missing two years of national team action and nearly having her promising, fledgling career derailed by multiple ACL injuries. And how her hard work, determination, and never-say-die attitude was rewarded with her Cup-saving, 35-yard rainbow cross to Abby Wambach in the 122nd minute.

And now here's the better version of the story: Megan Rapinoe is an absolutely awesome American human being, and if she isn't doing the Top Ten on Letterman by the end of July then we should just put Lady Justice on a milk carton and call her "missing."

Look, anyone who celebrated a goal against Colombia by running over to a field microphone, tapping it to see if it was on and then singing Bruce Springsteen to the television audience at home, is going to Valhalla, as far as I'm concerned.

And anyone who steps up to the spot, as she did against Brazil in the penalty shootout, throws a cocky look to the sideline, crushes a penno, then does a totally earned, drop-the-mic-and-turn on the Brazilian keeper — like this 5-foot-7 woman from Redding, Calif., was suddenly possessed by the spirit of Rakim — and screams something into the air that, even in that most pressurized of situations, made her teammate Alex Morgan crack up … well, that person is my kind of athlete.

I take issue with his use of the word "penno".

From now on it's " 'Pinoe"
