Pilots @ Pepperdine 2/10 7:00PM
This is kind of an interesting matchup and a game the Pilots really need, especially since the Waves are just half a game behind us in the standings. Pepperdine has been playing better as of late, however they did just suspend Keion Bell, arguably the most talented player in the conference, for the rest of the season. It will be an interesting game for sure, probably not one in which we can get away with 20+ turnovers...

Re: Pilots @ Pepperdine 2/10 7:00PM
Agreed on this being a big game. Pepp has been competitive in their recent games, including home wins over LMU & USF, a close home loss to SCU and losing @SMC by 8. (On the flip side, last Saturday @USD, Pepp had to go to OT to get the win... and it took a USD missed FT and a 40 foot desperation 3 at the buzzer to send it to OT...). This is not an easy game, by any means.
That being said, losing Bell will hurt offensively (he was suspended prior to the @USD game), as he averaged 18.9 pts/game. Rumors are circling, however, that this may be an "addition by subtraction" situation, and the Waves might feel they play better without him. I dont see how you can just replace offense like that so quickly.
Pepp will have this game circled, as a needed win to finish in the top 4... Let's hope we shake our road woes and show Pepperdine that we are not going to allow them to take our spot in the top 4.
If we play like we did against SMC and GU, with limited turnovers (unlike the SU game), I like our chances on the road.

Re: Pilots @ Pepperdine 2/10 7:00PM
Second "trap" game in 5 days for all the fellow worrywarts in the Pilotnation. While Bell was a great athlete in Malibu, it seemed like the other players stood around waiting for him to throw in a 4 ptr ala Harlem Globetrotters or one of his flashy dunks. Sometimes losing a star player brings out the best in the other players.( I would hate to play BYU if they had to play without the Jimmer).
Lets hope that Pam Anderson is courtside with her teenage sons so those fortunate fans get to enjoy some of the "natural beauty" of southern california....

Probable starters: Portland -- F Luke Sikma (13.4 ppg, 10.8 rpg, 2.5 apg), C Kramer Knutson (7.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg), G Nemanja Mitrovic (13.2 ppg), G Jared Stohl (14.1 ppg, 1.7 apg), G Tim Douglas (7.8 ppg, 2.4 apg); Pepperdine -- F Mychel Thompson (13.3 ppg, 5.8 rpg), F Taylor Darby (7.8 ppg, 5.2 rpg), C Corbin Moore (3.7 ppg, 3.0 rpg), G Joshua Lowery (4.8 ppg, 2.7 apg), G Lorne Jackson (11.9 ppg, 2.5 apg)
Noteworthy: With six conference games remaining, the Pilots are in fifth place, one game behind Gonzaga and Santa Clara, and two games behind second-place San Francisco. The Pilots are seeking their first conference road win, having gone 0-3 with losses at Gonzaga, USF and Santa Clara. ... The teams that finish fifth through eighth will play in the first round of the March 4-7 WCC Tournament in Las Vegas. The third- and fourth-place teams open tourney play in the quarterfinals on March 5, and the top two teams earn automatic berths into the semifinals on March 6.
A memorial service for Mauro Potestio is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Philip Neri Church, 2408 S.E. 16th and Division. A celebration of his life will follow in the parish hall.
Mitrovic went 4 for 9 from three-point range in Saturday's 71-55 non-conference win over Seattle University at KeyArena in Seattle and is shooting a NCAA-leading 48.3 percent from beyond the arc. As a team, the Pilots are shooting 42.8 percent from long range and rank second in the nation behind the Big Sky's Northern Arizona (43.5). ... Sikma, who leads the WCC with 11 double-doubles, needs three rebounds to break the school's career record of 910 set by Rick Raivio from 1974-78.
In the first meeting, Sikma had 15 points and nine rebounds, and Stohl added 14 points to lead the Pilots to a 57-42 victory over Pepperdine at the Chiles Center on Jan. 15. ... Thompson scored 25 points on 8-for-18 shooting from the field to pace Pepperdine to a 70-63 overtime victory at San Diego Saturday.
In the San Diego game, the Toreros had a three-point lead with 4.2 seconds to go and Chris Gabriel going to the free-throw line looking to extend the lead. San Diego positioned all of its players behind Garbriel, who missed. Pepperdine got an uncontested rebound and pushed the ball quickly to Thompson, who hit a 40-foot shot to force overtime. Jake Curtis wrote on The San Francisco Chronicle's website: "If San Diego had put one player in rebounding position on the free throw, it's unlikely Pepperdine, with no timeouts left, could have put itself in position for that shot. Even a foul on the rebound would have been better."
Waves coach Tom Asbury announced before Saturday's game that junior guard Keion Bell has been suspended for the remainder of the season for conduct detrimental to the team. Bell, who was averaging a team-high 18.9 points before his suspension, is not expected to return for his senior season.

It's almost a guarantee that Sikma will set that rebounding record in this game. I'm sure he'll be well congratulated when he comes home. I'm hoping for a good 15 point win here because the LMU road game will most likely be much more difficult...

Pepperdine's play-by-play guy (Al Epstein) is really good.
But they need to loosen the knob on the camera or something... they always miss the fastbreaks.
But hey - free video! Gotta love it.

2 questions... Why does the "Wave" wear a Hawaiian shirt? And it creepier than the old Gael?
And yeah, goodness the quick camera movement is going to give me whiplash! (But the price is right at least)

31-29 at half.
Nem has 9, all on threes. Riley has 8.
Pretty sloppy overall... we're having a hard time getting clean looks.

Ok... 6:28 to go, and it's tied up at 53.
Pepperdine went on a big run and went up by 8 or 9, but Portland has clawed back and just tied it with a 3 from Nem.
Jared is cooooooold.

Ahhhh! Down 1, Waves at the line to shoot one more, 9 seconds left.
We had a chance to take a lost shot to win it, but Tim drove early and took a wild shot. Freshman mistake and a learning experience, I know, but frustrating.
