He was coach at UW since before I moved to the NW 18 years ago and has had some pretty good teams in that span. Apparently the admins feel they should be on UCLA's level ( UCLA lost in the semi's this year)

A change of coach isn't always the answer.

He was a good coach and a good recruiter - and a good rival. I wish him the best.

It will be interesting to see UW's next move.

Sam Allardyce, if they're into long balls and kicking the other teams off the park.

Yeah, it's interesting. One of the local sports writers, Steve Kelley wrote a column recommending Seattle U's Pete Fewing. I wrote to Steve, saying that I wouldn't expect success for the program overnight, and I reminded him of the deep inroads that Clive had with FC Portland. He wrote me back and said this:

"I knew Clive well. I picked him up at the airport when he first arrived in Portland from West Ham. I was covering the Portland Timbers for The Oregonian at the time. I took Clive to his first Trail Blazer game and stayed in touch with him the rest of his life. Had a wonderful conversation with him about a month before he died. Pete was a good friend of Clive's and Pete is very well connected locally and nationally. I agree, however, that there are many good candidates." --Steve Kelley of the Seattle Times.

It's always cool to hear about the huge community influence that Clive had in the northwest...
