Hey guys, Happy Thanksgiving. UCSB comes into town this weekend. Don't know much about your program. Does'nt Jerry Glanville coach football there? Pretty funny guy. Whatever happened to Neidermeyer? UCSB looked at him but didn't offer. I thought he went to your school. You're in downtown Portland right? Fun city. I'll be there again in two weeks, too bad I couldn't get those meeting done earlier and joined you for a pint at Rogue or something.

What happened in the Kentucky game and WAZZU game? Trying to figure you guys out. Didn't somebody get hurt in that Washington State game? How is he doing?

Good luck stopping Orlando Johnson, a very good player. Nunnally is pretty good too. We also have this 7'3" Center, Smogyi, I think you guys wanted him but he preferred sandy beaches vs. rain I'm told. I don't thinks he's a big micro beer guy like me. That would be tough playing Smogyi in beer pong. Ever play a 7'3" guy in beer pong?

Close. Jerry Glanville coached at the cross-town school, Portland State. Portland does not field a football team. Ethan Neidermeyer graduated last year after a very nice career. Our campus is not located downtown (Portland St again); we are located on a bluff in North Portland, on the east side of the Willamette River. LINK

Regarding the Kentucky game, the team came out too nervous and tight, put themselves in a 0-15 hole to start after some missed layups, and KU is way too good to give that kind of lead. WSU shot lights out; UP did not have a good shooting game. UP closed the gap to one point in second half, but then WSU took off on another run. Our wing player Nemanja Mitrovic got hurt, but haven't seen any info regarding status.

We have a seasoned starting line-up, but most of our subs are first year players, with the inconsistency typical of freshmen. Good luck stopping Jared Stohl; he is a great shooter. If you can, you have a good chance because we do not have another instant offense guy. Luke Sikma (yes, his dad is Jack Sikma) is a monster rebounder, and scores well in a set offense, but not so much if he has to create his own shot.

Thanks Playmaker, my bad on confusing the two schools. Portland State is kind of a party school up the hill and Portland...when you drive south after going over the bridge from Vancouver, WA you see a sign for it...kind of near the racetrack? Just past that Jantzen beach stuff? What's University of Portland know for? Soccer is Portland State, right?

Does little Sikma have kind of a blonde perm like his dad? Sounds like a good match up between the two schools you ask me. Nunn and OJ lead UCSB. We're still looking for that third scorer. Maybe Pastorek or Serna? We have a couple freshman too off the bench that are still getting feet wet. Both can shoot, Boswell & Leaf. Still early.

Ever play Beer Pong Playmaker? Seems like the perfect sport for you. You can play it inside when it's raining. If your 56 yrs. old, I doubt you'll get hurt or pull anything. Best part is you have so many great beers in Portland it gives you an excuse to drink them, right?

Your Avatar is a little creepy Playmaker. Reminds me of Wilson in that Tom Hanks movie where he gets stuck on an island. Tom just fingerpainted Wilson a face with that red paint. Didn't give him a hat and uniform like you though. You should give Pilot a face too...I'd go with purple instead of red. I'm just saying...

How come you only have three stars Playmaker? Do you lie once in a while? Bad speller or poor sentence structure? Were you down graded from a four star or upgraded from a two star? Just curious...

When do I get a star?

Yes, you're right on where the exit for the school is...past the race track and a few more exits up on the right. Actually, we are the school known for soccer. We've produced many big time players on both the womens and mens side including Kasey Keller, possibly the best US goal keeper ever produced, Tiffeny Milbrett, Christina Sinclair, Conor Casey (of the current MLS Champion Colorado Rapids), Steve Cherondolo, and others...

I would say that our basketball is a work in progress, but, our coach Eric Reveno (formerly from Stanford) is making all of the right moves. Reveno is known for being an exceptional big man coach, and he really coached up the Lopez twins at Stanford. He's just starting to turn the corner at Portland with two straight 20+ win seasons and post season play. He convinced the school to really give him the resources that he needed to be able to recruit well when he received the job, and each class seems to be a little bit better than the one before it...

We are pretty good at beating the teams that we should beat this year, and at the same time the team hasn't been able to roll on all cylinders yet against better competition like WSU or Kentucky. In addition, we're still unproven on the road. We'll see if that changes as the season progresses...

Reveno has nothing on Bob Williams, he has coached up Greg Smogyi to 7'3".

Wow, you guys are pretty good at soccer too. Did you guys know this years College Cup is being played in Santa Barbara? A little warmer than St. Louis, Cary, NC, or Portland for that matter.

What would you consider a good season for the Pilots this year? Are you really thinking NCAA's or NIT perhaps? LMU is off to a bad start. Is Santa Clara better than you? Gonzaga had a nice ranking but lost two in a row, one at home to SDSU. We get the Aztecs in about three weeks in SD, pretty athletic team but not the best shooters from what I've seen.

How is the crowd up there? Probably down a little Saturday with holiday and all.

I'm thinking Orlando outscores Stohl and Gauchos break open a close one and win 81-70. What do you guys think?

If the Gauchos win will I get a star?

Re: Portland vs. UCSB basketball

17-18 wins and any form of post season play would be a pretty good season for us. It's debatable if we're better or Santa Clara this season, but, I feel like we do have a better system. I think many of us here would be very happy with a third place finish behind Gonzaga and LMU. If we could split our series with Gonzaga and win a home game against them, we'd obviously be ecstatic as well.

Right now, we are in a bit of a rebuilding stage, and we lost some exceptional players from last year's team. We have some good recruits, however, I expect us to be a better home team than a road team once again...at least in WCC play. We are deep, but, somewhat inexperienced on the bench and the program still needs to build up a bit more athleticism to really consistently compete with teams in bigger, higher RPI conferences (that are not mid-majors).

Unfortunately, we're still struggling to build up our crowds for our games, and with the holiday I'm expecting this to be a smaller crowd. We do better against the bigger draw teams and our biggest rivals like Gonzaga...

I'm thinking LMU is overrated this year. They just lost to Cal Poly, a middle of the road Big West team. You'll have a better idea of where your program is probably at the next two weeks. We play you Saturday then we play LMU, Finals Week, and then UCSB starts a 3 game road trip at Santa Clara.

I'm hoping for a WCC sweep but I'm bias. We're expecting a 20 win+ season and another NCAA Trip. We want to move out of the 15/16th Seed range and get maybe a 13/14th seed. That's why we gotta win in Portland tomorrow. You know, no respect for us West Coast schools. Look how long it took Gonzaga for respect.

Chief, along the lines of OJ vs. Stohl, we should win that battle, as you can write in OJ for at least 20--he will get his, no matter who is guarding him, even against double teams sometimes. The key will be whether Nunnally can knock down his 3 point shot. He led the BW in 3 point shooting % last year, shooting 45.5%, but is only shooting 21.7% from 3-pt. range this year so far, which is terrible. He's had ankle problems the last 2 games, which doesn't help his elevation, but at least he's been getting to the line, where he's shooting almost 90%. I expect his 17 ppg to increase as he improves his perimeter shooting. A week off is helpful in healing his ankle.

UCSB needs a 3rd scoring option, and that needs to be Serna, who is also recovering from a leg injury. He's only averaging 5.8 pps, but he should end up around 10 before the season is over.

Portland needs to have other scoring options as well, because UCSB's scrambling match up zone defense is athletic enough to contain Stohl. He's not as quick or tall as NDSU's shooters, even if his shot has good form. Sikma will be a problem for the Gauchos on the boards, but we're much better on the boards this year than last, mainly because Pastorek (6'10") is now getting more minutes from Weiner (6'0").

The Gauchos' defense is vulnerable to smart, good passing teams, which Portland is, but if we can stay a step quicker on close outs, we should harass the Pilots' enough on offense to pull out a Gaucho win on the road, which is a tough task. Prediction: Gauchos 63 - Pilots 61. OJ gets 23, and Nunnally 19.

A few things

First, you get stars by how many posts you make, so at 4 you have a ways to go before you are star worthy. Also, his name is UP7587 and playmaker is his ranking if you will. As you post more, your ranking changes that is why you are just a recruit.

Now for the game, I really don't know much about UCSB and I don't pretend to. For Portland when we say Stohl led the nation in 3pt% that means that he is really the best shooter in the nation. Despite what you may have heard he is the purest shooter in the country. His shot is extremely quick and is used to being shadowed so a zone, no matter how athletic, gives him a window.

Thanks Bench Warmer, I mean purplepride13. Have you ever thought about transferring purplepride? You've been around almost two and a half years and you're still riding pine? How many stars does this Stohl guy have? You guys are right, this Stohl guy can shoot and Sikma can board I'm glad we're not playing two on two.

The oddsmakers have Pilots a three point favorite. So you guys are favored by a FG. I'm thinking this Stohl guy is going to have a night like the Boiser State kicker last night. I'll stick with my UCSB winning by 11 pick but might wear my Nevada Wolfback hat just to be sure.

Do they serve beer at the game?

Chief stinker,

I like your style, in the CHILES CENTER, YOU will find beer following freely and the taste and quality is quite good...The upperclassman (Stohl, Sikma, Knutson, Hannibal ) have all played twice against Oj....they destroyed him in portland back in his freshman year as his team lost handily to the Pilots then, the game at Lmu oj played well for a rookie, the fans Really helped the lions eek out a victory in the last 3 seconds with a missed opportunity at the buzzerwhen they played at Lmu. Then your star player OJ had to leave the team because Bano and Good brought in more talented prospects and OJ SAW his pine time coming to a rapid rise, thus transferring to a lesser talented basketball program such as yours... Imo.....

Good luk, Stinky, pdx is well known in the United States as one of the best places to imbibe....the city is awesome and the people friendly...if you get a chance "sneak" into the mezenzene (sp) and enjoy the pregame and halftime festivities at the Pilot club. Drink, be raucous, but show respect, SECURITY is pretty tight and they will remove you from the arena if you disrupt what is the focus or are extreemlly obnoxious, so have fun, heckle like crazy the refs,& most of all Have A GREAT TIME...welcome to pdx!

Enjoy! Mesa pilot 1 Very Happy drunken Suspect

Imbibe is old person lingo for what my 18 yr old says drinking...but I know you knew that...it will be great to see OJ play again & remember Stohl, Sikma,& Knutson have improved as well. Good luck you GAUCHO MAN!!

Thanks Two Star. I'm not sure you'll recognize OJ. Remember when Lindsay Lohan was a cute little red head? She's not that same little girl either. Have you played against Nunnally too? Sounds like we have an extra weapon on offense but I'll give you the rebounding edge. slightly.

What does imbibe mean? I've been to Portland dozens of times. Love your beer, the Pearl, all the Rogues, McMenamin hotels, Bluehour.....killer Martinis at Henry's.

Good luck...

Yeah...same old formula: Stohl scoring 26, Sikma double double 12 points and 13 boards. I tuned in kind of late. I guess it was Derrick Rogers' first start. Waterford and Mitrovic added some nice support with 11 points each...

Luke almost had a triple-double - 7 assists.

It's good to see us build up sizable leads in these games, hold off late charges and put them away.

Stohl finally missed a FT but had 9 attempts. He needs more games with more FTs. As well as he shoots them...

Stohl for 26; Johnson for 18. Sorry, no star for you, yet. Razz

Pilots did a nice job defending Johnson, especially in the first half. He finally got some points during the Gauchos' second half. Nunnally had a very smooth 22 points. Not much help from the rest of the team, however. At the start, the Gauchos' zone left Stohl with several wide open shots; he hasn't seen those much lately. However, Coach Williams eventually made an adjustment to have someone stay on Stohl. After that he got many of his points in transition or from the FT line. Overall a very good game by the Pilots.

It's great to have a 20 point lead, but as someone sitting near me at the game said, "This is a really sloppy 20 point lead." Hey, I'll take a sloppy 20 point lead any time, but there were a lot of really iffy passes and seemingly uncontrolled play while we were building it.

I think part of that was due to the crazy reffing tonight, but not all of it. Nothing was getting called early and then in the 2nd half a lot of ticky tack stuff was getting called at times. Very inconsistent reffing.

After all these 20 point first half leads I've been waiting for us to put our foot on somebody's neck, stay focused and win by 40!!! I guess that dream will have to keep waiting. It's expected with all the new guys that we aren't going to have a full consistent 40 minutes this early in the season. Things ought to be exciting as everything comes together soon.

I think once we went up by 25 four minutes into the second half, Rev started putting in the true frosh players and really experimenting with different lineups. Once the lead was cut to single digits, the big guns were put on the floor to wrap it up.

What a complete game from Sikma. 12 points, 13 boards, 7 assists, 3 steals, and a block to three turnovers. Jared continues to fulfill all lofty shooting expectations. One had to wonder what the UCSB coaching staff was thinking starting the game in zone and allowing Jared to get wiiiiiide open looks. Not that this is news to other teams, but if you don't get somebody in his hip for the entirety of the game, he will bury you.

Maybe they were trying to psych him out. I think I can remember a couple of times where he's hit the most ridiculously tough shot possible and then missed a wide open look.

Another great win. Very Happy

At the outset of this season I recall there was some musing about who would start at the point, or that Waterford might well get limited minutes. Waterford may not offer a great deal of flash and pizzaz, but he certainly gets us into our offense. He appears to be a steady hand at the helm and has, to this point, been the better option at the point.
