Portland Cruises Past UC Davis with Shooting Clinic

PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland made 9-of-14 three-pointers and shot 71 percent from the field in the first half before sailing to a 75-60 victory over the UC Davis Aggies before 1,855 at the Chiles Center Saturday in the second game of the Athletes in Action Classic. The Pilots never trailed and led by as much as 26 points in the first period. Freshman Tanner Riley led Portland with 15 points, all coming before halftime.

Portland (2-0) will now face Florida Atlantic (2-0) in Sunday’s final of the AIA Classic with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The Owls defeated UW-Milwaukee 85-76 on Saturday to set up the matchup of unbeatens. Milwaukee and UC Davis take the court at 3 p.m.

Much like Friday’s season opening rout of Milwaukee, Portland came storming out of the gates with six three-pointers in the first 11 minutes and a string of 10 consecutive made field goals. Senior guard Jared Stohl, the national leader last year in three-point percentage, made all three of his attempts from beyond the arch in the first six minutes. Riley’s third consecutive three gave Portland a 27-8 lead with 9:09 remaining in the first period. A layup by freshman forward Ryan Nicholas gave UP its largest lead at 37-11 with 4:04 left and the home team entered the locker room with a 43-21 halftime lead.

Portland head coach Eric Reveno used his bench liberally in the second half as the Aggies would never get closer than 14 points down the stretch. All 13 Pilots available saw action, including extended minutes for six true freshmen.

“We tried to get the young guys some quality game experience in the second half,” Reveno said. “UC Davis made some good adjustments at halftime and got too comfortable against our zone in the second half. We made a few mistakes and allowed them to get some open shots, but overall the execution and effort by all our guys today was very good.”

As a team, Portland shot 62 percent from the field, 64 percent from three-point range and made 10-of-15 free throws. The Aggies were held to 38 percent shooting and 9-for-31 from beyond the arc. Portland also had a 33-23 rebounding advantage.

Four Pilots reached double figures for the second straight game. Stohl finished with 11 points, also all coming in the first period. Junior guard Eric Waterford added 11 points and six assists, while junior wing Nemanja Mitrovic chipped in 11.
