and here is the link to the UTSA story on their getting to the tournament.

They have been playing 5 years and this is their first tournament.
not too bad, actually. Lots of teams haven't seen one yet.

They are certainly jumping in with both feet.

Looking at the 25-player roster on their website ...

By state/country of origin:
  • Texas: 20 players
  • California: 1 player
  • Brazil: 1 player
  • Chile: 2 players
  • Norway: 1 player
All four of their foreign players are freshmen.

By position:
  • Goalkeeper: 3 players
  • Defender: 2 players
  • Defender/Midfielder: 1 player
  • Midfielder: 10 players
  • Midfielder/Forward: 4 players
  • Forward: 5 players
With only three defenders on the roster, I'm curious regarding their formation.

By class:
  • Freshman: 10
  • Sophomore: 4
  • Junior: 6
  • Senior: 5

Leading goal-scorer (Dillon, forward from California) has 6 goals; 6 players have 4-5 goals. Leader in assists (Rojas, forward from Chile) has 6 assists; 5 players have 4-5 assists.

According to attendance figures on their website, the largest crowd they've played for this season was 672. I suspect that will change on Friday. Surprised

Well, somebody else must be playing defense or we would have heard a lot about innovative formations.

They have played several games with only one of those players starting and two playing as subs, according to the box scores.

wasn't Sophie listed as a defender her freshman year?

I dig the Roadrunner logo ... but UTSA will need about 10 defenders.

It's too much trouble to do the Adjusted RPIs, but here is a list of the unadjusted RPI rankings of the teams UTSA played, in order from earliest in the season to end of the season. If you care to, which I doubt, you could match these up with the list above, which also is in chronological order:

322 (There are exactly 322 teams playing D1 Women's Soccer. This is Alcorn State.)
308
36
288
63
318
70
307
60
143
153
246
272
274
248
106
287
213
67
248
67
106

Against this group, their record was 13-7-2.

The game here should be a great experience for them.

Good to see Sophie out practicing today. Talk is that in an ideal world the coaches would like to rest Sophie this weekend, let's hope for dominating (and early domination at that) performances in this friday's game and hopefully this Sunday's game as well so Soph can rest up the final run

I hope she gets her rest.

Monday, as it turns out, was Sophie's 50th CAP for the full national team. Pretty phenomenal

in addition to all the accomplishments listed HERE, she also plays for a college in the USA.

It says of Keelin: "But first, she is looking at professional soccer options in Germany and Sweden, as is Pilot teammate Reed, who also will graduate in December." Road trip to Berlin and/or Stockholm -- who's in?

When the bracket was announced, I went to UTSA's website to check out the indivdual stats of the players. What I noticed is, like our girls, there isn't really one player you can key on based on the stats. Their scoring, whether it's goals and/or assists is very evenly distributed among four or five players.
Congrats to UTSA on their first NCAA tourney. I think we all are looking forward to a very entertaining game with of course our gals victorious!

A little more info about UTSA: this year, they have scored 44 goals so far! And, they have had 24 scored against them.

Given their schedule, as described above, their having scored 44 goals doesn't mean too much. Their opposition has been pretty poor. Given their opposition, their having given up 24 goals means something about their defense.

Indeed. 25 of those 44 goals are against teams over 300 RPI. If you discount those 4 games, they've been outscored 19-23.

A very big week for the Roadrunners with the announcement that UTSA is joining the WAC!

This should enhance all their sports; congrats to WSOC for their first NCAA appearance.

(The start-up UTSA football team will be coached by Larry Coker .. past national title winner.)

The Stanford game is still low scoring. They are up 1-0 after 68 minutes. If it continues, they get SCU in the next round...

That was pretty crazy. I think Amanda Frisbee got a hat trick...all in the second half. The bench outscored the starters!

Looking forward to a more level playing field against the Huskies on Sunday, though I think that one has the potential to be a nail biter.

Did I miss something or did Micaela Capelle not get on the field tonight?
