Pulpo Paul, aka Paul the octopus, who predicted every outcome of the World Cup that was presented to him, died today of "natural causes".

Since natural causes could mean sushi, I'm not sure what that means, but octopi apparently only live a couple of years.

Anyway, here's a tip of the hat to him.

Hopefully, it´s unrelated to the death threats Paul received. I´m sure some animal rights activists will be on it. As for me, I have some fond memories of salt and pepper squid at Thien Hong on 65th and Sandy... Yum.

Ooops, I hope that wasn´t insensitive! RIP Pulpo! Nice job calling the Cup. I´m a believer.

The aquarium said he went peacefully overnight.

Octopus sushi is pretty good I have to say.

So; R.I.P. (for an octopus) is the pressing topic on the Men's soccer forum; while on the Women's soccer forum, RPI is the big deal (like it really matters for the #2 ranked team). Glad to see the Pilot fan base have their priorities well defined.

How about that rain last Saturday? Wasn't really looking forward to getting wet a second time this year while watching the men but it's Pilot soccer. Besides, the men have a hard enough time drawing crowds. Just doing what I can.

If you need a lesson on why RPI matters to fans of the women's team go to that section and put the question to the fans there.

If you ever want to question my support of either Pilot soccer team again feel free. You can find me here most days.

That's nothing. On the MBB forum, we're discussing color swatches.

Point taken. I checked out the Women's RPI topic and I don't think I will go there - way too complicated. I do think that the Men's team RPI at this point is of way more concern. I am not sure what all the RPI ramifications are (maybe I should study the Women's forum closer), but seems that they have a very good record and unless LMU falters (or the Pilots beat them in the re-match) they may not make playoffs.

The RPI matters for the men, too. In fact, it may matter more to the men than to the women. Don't believe for a minute that the players and coaches aren't watching it closely.

To elaborate briefly, if the men aren't WCC Conference Champions, they need to get an at large selection to the NCAA Tournament. A major factor in the at large decision-making will be their RPI. Right now, they are #54 in the RPI rankings. That won't be good enough to get them in, even considering the other factors. So, they need to improve their ranking a lot or win the conference. The way to improve their ranking is to win the rest of their games.

The win over Gonzaga (not a great team) bumped them several spots in the RPI, so I'm hopeful that if they continue to win that they will be able to sneak into a high enough RPI spot to get an at large.

They really can't afford to lose any more games at this point. Five games left... 4-0-1 or better should get them in even if they don't win the WCC outright, but I'm not taking any chances on that. Gotta eat LMU.

I'm all for playing tough, but I draw the line at cannibalism.

We should stick with sushi.
