The NCAA just came out with an Academic Performance Rating database for coaches, finally holding them accountable for their academic standards on their teams. I think that poor performance (below 925 for contemporaneous penalties, 900 for historical penalties) for several years could decertify coaches. It just applies to a few sports right now, but I think it will eventually be extended to all sports.

Since I love to snoop around databases, i checked out a few local coaches (and Few)

Rev is doing great. Three of his four years were well above average for the Nation. He didn't do as well his second year here, which may not have been his recruits underperforming (ain't naming no names). At any rate UP's low was 918 that year. The last two years were pretty great 979 and 981.
A bit surprising to me was that Michael Holton's teams did fine, too. All of his three years in the database were well over the National Average.

Even more surprising was that John Calipari's teams seem to do OK. he has even shown that his programs get better the longer he is at a school.

But we may have discovered the real reason (or at least a reason) for the demise of Ernie Kent. His last year was 870, well below the level that a repeat performance would force probation and possible loss of scholarships. Dana Altman's Creighton teams were good students, and that may have had something to do with that hire.

Likewise OSU's Jay John. his last year was a dismal 883. The low grades may have been the last straw, and why they recruited a coach from Brown University.
Coach Robinson"s team was perfect last year.

And Ken Bone never had a team come even close to a passing APR. His BEST year was a probationary 908, and the rest were in the 800's
WSU must have taken academic oversight away from him. the Coug's were perfect last year.

For you Zag fans, Mark Few makes 'em study. They were perfect 3 of the last 6 years. they were only a below NCAA average 923 in 2005-2006 (ain't namin' no names there, either)

The WCC mostly looks in good shape, although USD had a bad year in 08-09.

A little surprising to hear that about Ernie, since "at least his players graduate" was a common defense for keeping him. If he stopped performing in that area his departure would make a lot of sense.

yeah, it looks like last year wasn't just a fiasco on the court. for both programs.

One year is no big deal (just a warning letter, I think), but a couple years gets you probation, and more gets lost scholarships.

Roy williams' UNC teams are near perfect in the database.

Four perfect years and the lowest was 977.

Mike Krzyzewski was nearly as good.
