Not sure if people saw this or not, but Donald Shiley - a 1951 graduate who, together with his wife Darlene, is UP's single-largest donor, having given $12 million to renovate and expand the Engineering Building (now Shiley Hall) - died this past weekend at age 90.

He is credited with saving over half a million lives with his various medical devices, most famous of which is the Shiley-Bjork artificial heart valve.

His legacy of philanthropy is stunning... $12 million to UP, $20 million to the Old Globe Theater in San Diego, $15 million to UC-San Diego, $10 million to USD, plus countless other millions to all sorts of foundations varying from the arts to medical research.
