The first pre-season poll came out with Portland men listed 23rd. This is the CSN poll. I don't personally hold much value in polls, but thought someone on PN might be interested.

So wait... is that a good wow or a bad wow? Wink

23rd seems pretty fair. We do return a good amount of talent from a 3rd round ("Sweet 16") team, but we did lose easily our best player in Colin Warner. Plus, UP definitely exceeded expectations last year... I'm not even sure if we were ranked heading into the playoffs.

Anyway, I personally think we could be in store for a very exciting season for men's soccer (I just get a great vibe from the team chemistry and the young talent they are bringing in), but 23 seems like a pretty reasonable starting point.

Do you disagree?

I'm almost positive that we were unranked going into the playoffs. I think #23 is very fair, and a nice thing to build upon...

The men's post-NCAA-Tournament RPI ranking was #21.

There are 48 teams in the men's tournament, with 21 automatic qualifiers and 27 at large teams. I don't follow the men's selection process, but I'm guessing, based on what I know about the women, that the men would have had to be within the top 40 to 45 teams as ranked by the RPI at the end of the regular season, in order to have gotten an at large selection.

Yeah, that much was true, Fanatic. There wasn't a top 25 ranking going into the tourney though; we were really a cinderella story and a team and a bubble team that squeeked into the tourney (if I remember correctly)...

And you were an English major. I thought "just wow" was pretty clear Wink

Seriously, we lost the best impact player we had and move up by 20-25 ranking points?
Did other schools lose a lot more? Just exactly how good are the new guys?

Can't wait to find out, but if they meet these expectations, the men's team is definitely back to being a contender. Top 25 looks like a great spot to be in for the men's tourney.

It's nice to see Portland, Stanford, and UCLA have top clubs on both the men's and women's sides... Now, it's time to deliver with a great season.

College Soccer News has the pilots at #23 in their preseason top 30.

23.  Portland - Midfielder Collen Warner (9g, 7a) will be hard to replace, but the athletic and soccer savvy Pilots will have a very good blend of experience and talent in 2010.  Seven starters return.  Seniors Jarad vanSchaik (6g, 8a) and Luke Ryan (7g, 2a) will electrify the attack.  Senior goalkeeper Austin Guerrero is the boss between the pipes.
