An Option for Gonzaga?

Post by up7587 on Fri Jun 18, 2010 12:17 am

I found THIS discussion of options for the MWC, and it included a speculative possibility for Gonzaga.

Add a non-football school: Would the WAC hold at eight teams for football but expand to nine for everything else?

Sources said Benson is open to the idea, although I’m not sure his membership is.

The top choice might be the University of Denver (the WAC office is located in the city)? Or maybe Seattle (big market)? Or … Gonzaga?

I have a hard time seeing the WAC making a serious run at the Zags — even if it wanted a basketball-only school — because of the devastating impact it would have on the neighboring West Coast Conference.

And I’m not sure the football-focused WAC would be a better fit for Gonzaga than the WCC.

I would be surprised if Gonzaga were interested in the MWC option. They can do pretty much what they please in the WCC as it relates to basketball anyway and I don't think the MWC would offer that many more financial opportunities.
