that at least makes more sense for her than USC, which was the original rumor.

I hope she finds a place that works for her.

Looking at UCLA's box score for their lost semi-final game in the 2009 College Cup, their four starting mid-fielders were Zakiya Bywaters (now a sophomore), Chelsea Cline (now a sophomore), Kylie Wright (now a senior), and Kristina Larsen (graduated). Their three midfield subs were Summer Williams (now a junior), Amelia Mathis (now a junior), and Lucretia Lee (now a sophomore). I wonder if they're thinking Charney would have a shot at filling Larsen's spot. That would make sense if Charney was seeing that she was not going to be in the starting lineup for the Pilots.

I have no problem at all with Charney going to UCLA, or anywhere else if she wants a starting spot. Good luck to her.

Charney has to sit out the coming season because of the transfer, correct? She can't play till 2011?

From the NCAA website on transfer rules:

Transfer Rule: In most cases, a student-athlete who transfers from one NCAA institution to
another is permitted to practice and receive athletics aid immediately at the second institution.
As a general rule, the transfer student is required to serve an "academic year-in-residence" at the
second institution prior to competing. However, several exceptions to the transfer rule exist that
enable a student-athlete to be immediately eligible for competition at the second institution.
The most commonly used exception is known as the "one-time transfer exception." As the name
suggests, this exception allows a student-athlete to transfer from one NCAA institution to
another on one occasion and be immediately eligible for competition. Certain conditions must
be met to use this exception, including: (1) the student-athlete must have been in good academic
standing and academically eligible for competition at the previous institution; (2) the previous
institution must grant the student-athlete written permission to use of the exception; and (3) the
student-athlete cannot have transferred previously from a four-year institution. [Note: In
Division I, the one-time transfer exception is not available if the student-athlete wishes to
participate in basketball, men's ice hockey or Division I-A football at the second institution.]

Over the years, there have only been a handful of students that I can think of who have transferred out..

The ones I can think of were Regina Holan, Kim Engesser, and Darcy Caruthers .

All played immediately and were impact players at their new schools. Holan went on to score 60 goals in her career,I think. Engesser lead the NCAA in scoring at Nebraska, and Caruthers started in goal at Texas.

Additionally, Tara Koleski came here from Cal and played immediately.

It will be interesting to see if Charney is granted her release to play right Away.. If you recall, Kelsey had to sit when she came here from UCLA because Jill didn't give her a release. My guess is that Garrett (or Larry Williams) will follow Clive's precedent and grant the release.

What about Lauren Arase? Did she have to sit out when she transferred to UP?

I can't remember that one, but you may have a point. The important thing for Charney is that I don't think there was a case where a player who left wasn't granted a release.

This is called, "class" & "integrity," something that, unfortunately, is missing, shall I say, elsewhere.

I assume that Charney would not have transferred to UCLA, if in fact that is what she is doing, without having known in advance that she would not have to sit out a year.

I had forgotten about Kelsey having to sit out a year. That, more than anything else I know or have heard, says a whole lot about Jill Ellis.

I have it on very good authority that UCLA is Charney's destination. Good enough to say it is fact. I am not sure of any of the paper work details, so I don't know if there could be any snags or if all the paper work is done.

I only wish the best for her, and hope that she does well at UCLA. (unless we are playing them) Smile

to be fair to Jillian, that is, I think, a general UCLA policy set by the AD. Several Pac10 schools are pretty hard nosed about that.

Also, wasn't Kelsey actively involved with the national team during the year that sat out? I recall not being surprised or upset at her sitting out a year because I assumed that she was on NT duty and would not have played anyway. (And because we had Cori A. returning as a senior GK and she probably wouldn't have been #1 anyway).

Well, she was on the YNT while she sat out, but the player she shared time with was UCLA's starting keeper. It didn't interfere with Valerie Henderson's college playing.

Thanks for the info, Geez. I won't go bashing Jillian elsewhere over this particular issue. But, it does say something about the difference between UCLA and U of P. UCLA's athletic program, apparently, first is about protecting the school, even if at the expense of the student athlete. U of P first is about what is best for the student.

I am not trying to come off as being hyper-cynical but regardless of the school -- be it UCLA, UP, UNC, ND, or Florida State -- TOP LEVEL level D1 college athletics is a business and coaches are paid to win.

Just ask anyone who coaches or plays TOP LEVEL D1 sports -- production (i.e. National Championships) is what cuts it.

It's a high anxiety, dog eat dog world and only the strong survive.
