UP Admissions
Reading PORTLAND, I noted that over 11,000 applied for 820 spots in the freshman class. It was also noted that about 45% of applicants are accepted. And that of those who are accepted but go elsewhere, 10% go to UW and 7% go to GU. Wow, talk about a stark choice between good and evil!

University of Portland sets record with 11,382 applications
The University of Portland received 11,382 applications for admission for Fall 2010, topping the previous all-time high of 9,352, set last year. This marks the fifth consecutive year the University has received a record number of applications.andThe number of applications received has nearly doubled since 2006, when the University had 6,355 applicants. The application deadline for the upcoming school year was Monday, Feb. 1.
“The University of Portland’s reputation continues to get stronger and stronger,” said dean of admissions Jason McDonald. “More applicants allow us to be more selective, and we’ve seen our academic profile and geographical diversity increase.”
McDonald estimates that the University’s acceptance rate will be near 45 percent this year, down from 56 percent in 2009 and 65 percent in 2006. He attributes the 20 percent increase in applications from a year ago to the University’s rising status as an academic institution, the success of outreach and marketing strategies, and students who are applying to more colleges than in previous years.
An increased number of students are coming from regions beyond the Pacific Northwest, with marked growth in students from California, Hawaii, Montana, Colorado, Arizona, Texas and Minnesota.
“This shows that the University of Portland is becoming a destination for students throughout the West,” McDonald said, “and we’re seeing growth in the Midwest as well.”
McDonald also believes a key factor in the growth of the number of applicants is students and their families learning that affording a high quality education at a top-ranked private institution like the University of Portland is possible with the financial aid packages and scholarships available to those who apply.
The Fall 2010 class will begin school on Monday, August 30.
Corrected for meaning and clarity. You need the comma to distinguish between multiple reasons and the compound reason. You need the additional words to match the first paragraph unless you are concerned about the size of the students who are applying. The clarity of the first sentence would be enhanced it it were two sentences - too many "ands"

Sheesh... everyone's a critic!
And who says you can't be a little Faulkner-esque in a press release? You say ands create run-ons... I say they are grace notes!
