From Mayfair High in Lakewood is on the ESPN lists of commitments to the Pilot program, with an 88 rating. A burner who hopefully can distribute the ball. I think that brings to 6 recruits of whom we know.

Go Pilots.

Tim Douglas, 5'9" PG Empty A PG for the future

Post by DTLegend Mon Mar 29, 2010 11:05 am

So when Rev said he got good news from a recruit was he talking about Tim Douglas. ESPN has him as the latest senior to give a verbal commitment to the Pilots. He's small but seems to be a quick guard with great ball-handling skills. ESPN has him rated at an 88 which would make him the highest recruit we have, along with Riley Barker that is. Here is what ESPN has said about him over the past couple years:

December, 2009: Douglas is a pint-sized point guard, but he's a good one nonetheless. Despite his height, he does have long arms, big feet, and can really blaze a trail in transition. He is a true point guard that can really pass in transition and deliver timely passes in the narrowest of situations. He loves to compete at both ends and is a true leader with a high basketball IQ. His jump shot is solid, but with added strength and repetition it should continue to smoothen out. He is an unsigned senior, but he should not have a problem attracting schools at the mid-major level for his services.

August, 2009: Douglas is quite small in stature, but he knows how to play this game. To make up for his lack of size, he has a bevy of moxy and savvy for this game. He manages the game like a seasoned veteran and isn't afraid to make the big play. He pushes the ball well in transition and always has his head up to advance the ball. His handle is slick and clever; which allows him to get into the key to deliver the assist. However, to take his game to another level would be to become a more consistent shooter out to the stripe. He can knock down the shot, but it's the weakest part of his game. Overall, once Douglas adds some upper body strength and continue to mature his game, he should be a solid floor general in the Big Sky or Big West.

October, 2008: Douglas is tiny which makes it difficult to project his collegiate level. However, he has enough all-around talent - if he grows - to make him an intriguing recruit for the next level. He has very good speed and quickness as well as a pretty slick handle. He can handle it equally well with either hand, and his jump shot is solid with range out to the stripe. His overall feel for the game is a work in progress, but he has the mentality of a point guard. Whether Douglas grows - both in terms of size and skill - will determine the level of college basketball he plays.

Just one more side note about the rating system at ESPN. A player who is given a 40 has not been scouted enough to make a good judgment. A 40 is also given to junior college transfers. So in the case of TJ, Nik, and this years recruit Derrick Rodgers they were/are all rated at a 40 for lack of information. The same is true for Nem who was rated at a 40 because he was virtually unknown coming out of Canada.

I'd say he sounds like a pretty perfect fit, with our huge bevvy of posts, a distributing point guard is exactly what we need.

I'm not sure whether he will come in right away and make a difference like T.J. did, but heck if we can get 10-15 mins of him on the floor to progress over the year that's more time Jared will spend playing his natural position. Sounds like he might be one of those guys that this first year might show promise but get a little physically over-matched; a summer with Bradford Scott will do wonders for a break-out Sophomore year...

This is the guy I saw the Portland coaches talking to after the LMU game in LA. I thought it Derrick Rodgers...but it was Douglas. Congrats sounds like a great pick up.

Looks like WCC will have some undersized superfast PG's

Mayfair High hoops point guard Tim Douglas committed to the University of Portland while on a visit to the Pilots' campus over the weekend, Monsoons' coach Tony Davis said by text message Monday afternoon.

The 5-9 Douglas averaged 20.2 points and 5.6 assists per game and was the Player of the Year in the Suburban League while helping his team capture the league title and the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section's II-A playoff division - where it lost to eventual champion Eisenhower.

Nice averages and it's always nice to get a kid who is named POY of a good league.

I am interested to see if Tim Douglas is able to transfer his scoring ability to the next level. As a player of smaller stature, he may have to adjust his game. Getting shots off against taller, faster defenders will be a challenge.

It will be very interesting to watch the team as it evolves. The current group grew very close, after playing together for several years with minimal changes. Five players departing and seven players coming in will be a dramatic shift in the group dynamic.

It is also nice that our two recruits out of Washington were both on the All-State teams... Tanner Riley on the 3A team and Ryan Nicholas on the 4A team...

Other Division I recruits in the all-state game will be Vashon's John Gage (Stanford), Bellevue's Aaron Bright (Stanford), Mount Si's Tanner Riley (Portland), Gonzaga Prep's Ryan Nicholas (Portland), Ephrata's Patrick Simon (Washington State) and Walla Walla's Michael Weisner (Montana).

Yeah, it does sound like he's more of a pass-first point guard though, so, he'll only need to get his shot off to keep other teams honest. It sounds like he'll likely have a lot less upper body strength than TJ did in the beginning, so, his game probably won't be about drawing contact. As a freshman, I'd be more concerned about having a good assists to turnovers ratio than shooting a really high percentage. He'll have some talented guys around him even with the departures.
