What's Wrong with Santa Clara Empty What's Wrong with Santa Clara

Post by Purple_Portland_Pilot_113 Mon Feb 15, 2010 6:53 am

Am I the only one that notices, Santa Clara isn't much of a competitor in many sports in the WCC. It just seems like they concentrate too much on academics (not that that is a bad thing, It's great!) But I just don't understand. Stanford, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Duke are all competitive in some sports. Is the reason because Santa Clara is too small. Is it because they don't have that kind of money. If so, should we kick them out of the WCC, they seem to be in the cellar for most sports.

I could be wrong, but I think Santa Clara has money and I think they are bigger than Portland. I don't think their academic standards are much different than other WCC schools. I think it's just that some of their sports are in a down cycle. Why, I'm not exactly sure.

I think that they are just in a down cycle. They have been very good at women's soccer, and I expect them to be good again, once they stop being hit by the injury bug. And they were good in basketball in the not too distant past. I am not sure about the other sports.

SCU is in a down cycle right now... In recent history, SCU has had national champion caliber men's & women's soccer teams, and strong hoops teams. Times are a bit tough now for them, but I am certain that SCU will return soon...

I think we definitely need SCU in the WCC. I don't expect the down cycle to last long, especially with Brandi Chastain playing soccer on SCU's field in the WPS this past season. That has to be helping their recruiting for women's soccer. To me, SCU totally fits the mold of a WCC school: a small academic-minded Catholic school on a river or near the waterfront with quality student athletes...

I might be wrong but isnt their star guard out for the season. The WCC Player of the year graduated, the lost two good players, one of who was close to or made the all_-fresman Wcc team. I think I know what they need geez, a riverwalk in Like in San Antonio down the drainage ditch there. It would help with recruiting tremedously,J"K idding.

Here is an article that discusses the issues at Santa Clara. LINK In the comments there are some comparisons between Keating and Reveno.

Hey! Don't make fun of my home!

Okay, I kid. The Guadalupe River (in Geez's picture) really doesn't qualify as much of a river anymore. Though, I remember a few years back it flooding when we got some wild weather (comparatively, we call it "rain" here in Portland). When I worked at Adobe (left side of the photo) as an intern I remember sandbags down below the cafeteria (which is what you see in the photo) and lots of muddy brown water!

If we're making an argument that Santa Clara or San Jose is "close to the ocean" you have a better shot at that than saying Portland is close to the ocean. I've done the drive to the coast in both places - the Portland-coast drive is about an hour, the San Jose-Santa Cruz drive is about 30 minutes.

It is a Jesuit school...

Kidding! Though having a Jesuit education in HS and a Holy Cross one in college, I can tell you I prefer the Holy Cross. Smile

The original quote was.

No mention of an ocean, just a waterfront or river nearby, on which grounds I still think SCU is a stretch. I'll concede the quality student athletes part.

At the time I went there, La Salle in Milwaukie was the only Christian Brothers school in the world without Christian Brothers.

LSHS... Goooooo Falcons!

I am still proud that "Whoosh Whoosh Pilots!" has its roots in "Whoosh Whoosh Falcons!"... probably the greatest thing Rochin54, MattyWizz and I ever did.

But, back to the topic of this thread... really, what is up with Santa Clara? I suppose it's just a down stretch for them, but they haven't been near the top of the conference in any sport for a few years now. I suppose their women's soccer team was #2 this year, but that's it... I'm not sure any other Santa Clara team in any other sport has finished in the top 3 the past two years, which is shocking because historically Santa Clara always fielded teams in nearly every sport that were top-half of the WCC.
